It was only the first of the two that he'd been aware of before hand; memories of their miscarriage were quick to enter his mind and turn his stomach with worry. But, nonetheless, he pulled his lips back into a smile as he stepped up onto the stage beside her, hoping his legs weren't shaking as much as they felt like they were.


    His gaze shifted to the crowd. The reactions of those below sent his heart racing. They were all so happy. It didn't seem as if any of them shared his fears. A small sigh escaped him. It was only one time. Bad things happened; this new litter was something to look forward to, he assured himself.


    Feeling a small spark of excitement light his chest, Aerosky cleared his throat slightly. "Mind if I...?" A smile more genuine than the previous one traced his muzzle. There would be something else to look to after tonight, he was reminded...

    Perhaps that was a bit of an overstatement, actually. He'd be on his own if he didn't have any clanmates or friends on his side. He had those. Lots. But now, he was the sole leader of the clan, and it was that fact and the responsibility that it carried was what frightened the canine, and twisted tight knots in his stomach.


    At times, he wondered how he of all animals had managed to climb the ladder. It wasn't that he didn't care about the well-being of the group, of course: he really did, but simply put, he was... well, lazy. A born pleasure-seeker over a hardworking leader.


    When their previous leader — the one that ruled before he and Wolfshine stepped up — had promoted him, he supposed he knew that he wasn't ever going to be fit for such a job, but it was the mere nervous excitement of the moment that brought him to accept it and keep it for the years to come.


    And now, here he was. A leader. The only leader. Ha. He sure didn't feel like one. He wasn't organized like Wolfshine. He spent most of his time socializing and doing pointless stuff... It just... ugh: it scared him. He couldn't slack off anymore. It was all on him.


    So it was time to change, he'd decided.


    Those who were up early that cool morning would find the canine sitting on the porch of his cabin with a small pencil in his jaws and a slightly crumpled sheet of paper at his paws. The lines upon it were shaky and sloppy like those of a human child only just learning to write; to fit the theme, a small coloring book containing cartoony letters of the alphabet lay next to him. Evidently, he was still learning how to write: something he was a little embarrassed of as well.


    But, if he were to make a to-do list of any sort, it was pretty damn important. This was what organized people did, right? He was sure he'd seen Shiya do it once or twice before. He imagined it'd help either way: just knowing what he was supposed to do. It was a start.

    The canine had thought he was imagining things when the distant, short cry caused him to halt. His jaws parted slightly in unease; his ears and muzzle lifted slightly to the air. No traces of blood were carried in the breeze. The only notable thing about it was how it was cooler than it had been in the weeks before. That was normal, considering that autumn was setting in.


    With the hopes that it was simply a kid having fun or being surprised — he heard their squeals all the time and nothing bad ever happened — he continued on his way, enjoying the satisfying crunch of leaves beneath his paws and the changing scenery. Autumn wasn't among his favorite seasons, but —


    He broke into a run as soon as he heard the scream. Something was definitely wrong. When the duo finally broke into view, his breath had broken into ragged gasps. "Wh-wha... Oh, crap!" Chocolate eyes fixated instantly on the trap. "A-a stick. We need a stick. A sturdy one. We might be able to pry it open." He stumbled toward his child, feeling his throat tighten with worry.


    If he were to be frank, he had no idea if this were to work or not, but it was better than nothing.
