[size=10][font=times new roman][color=black]Thorin nodded at Balin and gestured down the tunnel. He walked up to Bilbo. "Now is the time to prove your worth as a burglar, Master Baggins. Bring back a treasure for your king?" he asked, taking Bilbo's hand and pressing his lips to it lightly. "Balin will go down part of the way with you, so you know the way. Remember not to tell the wyrm anything, should he awaken."
    ~
Tauriel recited the Elven incantation over and over again, covering the wound and then wrapping clean strips of bandage around Kili's leg. She tried to ignore the screams of the young Dwarf, for they pained her heart.
Fili brushed his brother's weary hair from his forehead, trying to soothe him and stop his screaming.

    Happy New Year!!!

[size=10][font=times new roman][color=black]Thorin turned away then, gathering the Company outside of the door to wait until Bilbo returned. Balin led Bilbo into the tunnel, stopping when they were about halfway into the kingdom. "Bilbo, you don't have to do this. I know we brought you along for the purpose of stealing the Arkenstone from Smaug, but you've already proved yourself ten times over."
    ~
Tauriel tied off the end of the bandage, glad that the Dwarf had become quiet.
Fili was in awe. What did she say that made Kili react this way?

[size=10][font=times new roman][color=black]Balin smiled then. "Good luck, Master Baggins. I leave you here. And if there is a live dragon, don't waken it." He turned and left quickly.
    ~
Bard nodded and gestured to a small room with a pallet on the floor. "Will this suffice?"

[size=10][font=times new roman][color=black]Gold coins and jewels aplenty shifted while the burglar walked across the hall and the dragon stayed still as stone. He was awake of course. Smaug could smell him as soon as he entered. The dragon opened an eye, peeking around the treasure mounds, looking for his intruder.

[size=10][font=times new roman][color=black]With a low rumble, Smaug lifted his massive head, opening his eyes and taking a deep breath. He could smell the intruder and hear him breathing. The dragon smirked (the best a dragon can anyways), noting the small hitch in Bilbo's breath. He's frightened, and rightly so! Smaug started to crawl out of the gold, still looking for the hobbit. "Well, thief, I can smell you. I hear your breath and feel your air. Where are you?" He moved his head to the place where the breathing he heard was loudest. "Where are you?" he asked again, more forcefully. The coins shifted and the red beast followed the sound of what could only be someone running scared.
    ~
Fili sat next to Kili. He looked up at the she-Elf. "Thank you, for what you did." Tauriel nodded at him. "It was not a problem. I am happy to find I could help." Fili smiled.
"Oin, is there anything I can do? Maybe help make more ointment for when we change his bandages?"

[size=10][font=times new roman][color=black]"Aah, there you are, Thief in the Shadows." Smaug leered at Bilbo. "Tell me, why are you here, and without your Dwarves? Don't bother denying it; I can smell them on you. Speaking of smell," the dragon leaned his head closer, "who are you and where do you come from, may I ask? I don't remember smelling your kind before." He looked at the hobbit with an expectant glare, twisting around the pillar where Bilbo was hiding to be more out in the open. The vain creature thought he looked more intimidating that way. In the process he knocked down some stone and the mountain shuddered.
    ~
Thorin looked up suddenly, standing when he felt the great shaking of the stone. His blue eyes clouded in worry for Bilbo. The sooner the dragon is out of that mountain, the sooner you can get to the gold... his mind whispered and the Dwarf shook his head, trying to ignore the voices of his head.
"Was that an earthquake?" the Company asked and Balin answered. "That, my lads, was a dragon."
    ~
Fili nodded at Oin's words, but the creaking of wood made him shut his mouth with an upward glance. Dust and dirt fell down onto his face as a faint tremble could be felt on the ground. "Or not…" he whispered. He stood and turned to Bard who was comforting his bairns. "You must take your children and get out of here. The dragon has awoken."
Bard frowned down at him. "There is no where to go." Tilda whimpered with frightened eyes, "Will the dragon kill us?" Bard suddenly pulled one of the elusive black arrows from the ceiling boards. "Not if I kill it first."
    [align=center][font=times new roman][color=black]______________________
*shrieks* That would be so sad and horrible!!! Like what if the scene from the movie was reversed?!! I think I would die! Somehow it would be even sadder than it already is! And the idea is such a Thorin thing to do, because he has already lost so much and he just thinks distancing himself would lessen the pain…I'm getting Thorin feels now ;( I think it would be a great thing to add.

[size=10][font=times new roman][color=black]"Barrels," Smaug spat, drawing his head back, "now that is interesting." The dragon drew up to his full height. "Now, back to your little Dwarf friends. Where are they hiding? I know that they sent you in here to do their dirty work, burglar." He swept his tail through the treasure, sending the Arkenstone through the air. The burglar and dragon were moving deeper into the treasury as they spoke and Smaug opened his wings, flying down to land on a platform.
    ~
Thorin shook his head. "Give him more time." Balin frowned, "More time for what? To be killed? The Thorin I know would not hesitate to go in there-"
Thorin silenced him with a glare. "I will not risk this quest for the life of one…burglar." he said in a rough, slightly mechanical voice. His blue gaze was steely, but suddenly softened and Thorin made a confused expression.
"Thorin, I fear for you. A sickness lies upon that treasure hoard, one that drove your grandfather mad."
"I am not my grandfather." Thorin protested at Balin, eyes steeling again.
    ~
Fili rushed over to where Kili lay. "Kili, wake up." He said quietly, gently shaking the other Dwarf out of sleep. "Quickly, you must wake. The dragon could come; the mountain has shaken." Tauriel helped the two Dwarves gather their supplies. "We must find a boat." she said softly.

[size=10][font=times new roman][color=black]"They sent you in here for the Arkenstone, didn't they?" Smaug said, ignoring Bilbo's protests. "Did they think I did not know this day would come? When those sniveling cowards would come crawling back to the mountain like flies to dead flesh," the dragon insulted the Company. "It matters not. Oakenshield's quest will suffer. What did he promise you? A share of the treasure? As if it was his to give…" He swept at the Arkenstone again. "I cannot be defeated. My armor is iron. My scales are shields and my claws spears. My wings are a hurricane!" He went on bragging, rising to full height and exposing a black hole under a scale on his chest.
    ~
Thorin's look softened and returned when Bilbo's name was mentioned. "Yes," he said quietly, "I know." He looked towards the door, weighing the risk of rescuing Bilbo in his head.
    ~
Fili helped Kili stand up, while Tauriel comforted the Bardlings. She told them that they would be alright and the dragon would not hurt them, but in her heart, the elf knew she might be wrong.

[size=10][font=times new roman][color=black]"What did you say?" He snarled. The burglar made a hasty reply about his reputation and the dragon snorted, smoke wafting from his nostrils. He could clearly see the Arkenstone near them. "You were only ever a means to an end, Burglar. The coward Oakenshield has waged the value of your life and found it worth nothing." He rumbles near Bilbo.
    ~
Thorin growled, almost possessively. "No, I'm going." He slips through the entrance and enters the dark tunnel, sword drawn.
    ~
Tauriel leads the children to the boat. "We'll sit here and wait for another sign that the dragon may be coming. Don't be frightened." Fili turned to Kili. "Do you need help walking, or are you capable?"

Smaug growled, bending down his head close to Bilbo. "But I think not. Our little game ends here. Now, tell me, Thief, how do you chose to die?"
    ~
Fili smiled. "I guess elves are good for something after all."
    "I heard that!" Tauriel retorted.

[size=10][font=times new roman][color=black]Smaug roared in rage, opening his mouth and letting the fire rush out. The flames covered his body and the room.
    ~
Thorin gasped with relief, seeing Bilbo appear as he entered the treasure room. "You're alive," he exclaimed and pulled the hobbit to his chest, kissing him hard on the lips. When he pulled away, Thorin caught sight of the gold behind them. The Dwarf looked in awe at it. "Did you find it, Bilbo? Did you find the Arkenstone?" His voice took a new tone, one of a different passion. He let out a ragged sigh as he was entranced.
    ~
Fili followed, watching for any indication of pain from Kili. He noticed Tauriel watching too.

He turned it towards Bilbo and started walking forward towards the edge. It was like he was in a haze and nothing made sense.

Fili laughed. "Of course you are."

[size=10][font=times new roman][color=black]Thorin stared at him, a confused look on his face. Why does he keep saying my name? Am I doing something wrong? He breaks eye contact to look down and he breaks through the haze that was over him. With a shocked expression, Thorin lowers the sword. "Oh Mahal! Bilbo I-" He starts to apologize, but stops. The Dwarf looks to his left and sees Smaug, crawling towards them.
"You will burn!" The dragon roars. Thorin pushes Bilbo behind him and raises his sword towards the dragon. Suddenly, the Company runs out of the tunnel with their weapons and a battle cry. Smaug meets them with a fiery shout of his own and they hastily run down the steps so they will not be burned.

Licking tongues of fire caught his clothes and he yelled at the scorching heat. He flung off his outer layers and stood, walking with as much grace as possible to the front of the Company. "Come on, we keep moving."
    ~
Fili blinked quickly, feeling the same as Kili. A sharp, but distant roar pierced the air and he and Tauriel shuddered.

[size=10][font=times new roman][color=black]Smaug turned around towards the hobbit. "You care about them, do you?" he paused for a minute, seeing the answer in Bilbo's eyes. "Good, then you can watch them die!" He started stalking away with a growl deep in his throat when a clear voice called.
"Here! You witless worm!" It was Thorin, of course, being daring as always. He was high up on a stone platform, holding onto a chain. The dragon's rumblings grew louder with agitation and he slithered towards the Dwarf. "You…how dare you enter my domain?"

"You will take nothing from me! I laid low your warriors of old. I instill terror in the hearts of men!" the dragon replied angrily. "I am King Under the Mountain!"
Thorin shouts back, "These are Dwarf lands and this is Dwarf gold! We will have our revenge," he finishes, then barks commands at the hidden Company in Khuzdul. Each of the groups pulls the supports out from the stone pieces, revealing a beautiful golden statue, an enormous duplicate of Thrór. Thorin grips the chain again as he is suspended in mid-air and everything is hushed by the awed gasp of the dragon. Smaug is entranced.

    ~
Fili's heart felt as if it was rising in his throat. Tauriel looked frantically from side to side. Civilians were now aware of Smaug, getting into their own boats and the air filled with screams of fright.
    ~
Bard was busy. He was trying to get out of his jail cell, having been imprisoned by the Master. He could see the shadow of Smaug coming closer and closer still and the bowman's heart ached for his children.

[size=10][font=times new roman][color=black]Thorin squeezed Bilbo's hand in return, then he walked away, not wanting to watch the city become a torch in the dark of night. His gaze flickered to the golden-flecked hole in the wall of Erebor, the sparks rising in the air reflecting on the metal. Thorin sighed, pacing now, and tried not to think of his nephews down in the inferno. Thinking of the gold seemed like a haven from the storm in his mind...
    ~
Fili tried to block out the screams of children and men and women. The heat from the fire was intense and he shielded his face from it.
    ~
Bard was becoming frantic. He found a length of rope, but had no idea how it would be of use. "Please, help me!" he yelled to anyone who could hear him. Then, his opportunity came. A quick noose, a wooden beam, and the neck of a particular Master of Laketown solved the bargeman's problem, and Bard climbed onto the rooftop, newly armed with a bow and a quiver of arrows.
