Moments after he left, the teenager set her room back to normal, putting the knife beside her bed, turning off the light, everything except closing the window. Tossing and turning in her bed, she desperately tried to get some sleep. Giving up, she walked over to her desk, turned on the light, and grabbed paper and pen. She started writing, and didn't stop until she fell asleep at her desk. Something she was used to doing when sleep would not come to her.

The sun glared in Marie's eyes as she woke up. Realizing she had work that day, she quickly dressed and headed out the door, not bothering to eat breakfast. While locking the door, she remembered what had happened the night before. Shaking the memory from her head, she slowly walked to the bus stop.

Putting her hair up, to keep it out of her face, she stepped onto the bus once it arrived. Seeing the man out of the corner of her eye, she paused for a moment then quickly found a seat. She focused on her folded hands as she prepared herself for another mindless day of waiting tables.

As the bus took off, she glanced back at him, wondering if she had just imagined the whole thing. She was filled with regret. Quickly, she took out her notebook and pen, wrote one word, and pressed it up against the window. It read "sorry." She avoided eye contact while the bus passed.

She thought about that moment a lot thought the day. Her boss noticed she was distracted, and sent her home as soon as she dropped some dishes and cut herself trying to clean them up. With a bandaged hand, she rushed home, clumsily unlocking the door.

She sluggishly closed the door behind her. Sitting down at the door, she took her hair out of the high ponytail. With a few moments to decide, she finally chose to go to the park to clear her mind. Quickly getting up and walking out the door, being careful to lock it behind her, she began her walk. With the combination of new determination and a clouded mind, she wasn't very observant.

On her feet, she dusted herself off. She waited for him to finish before sarcastically asking, "What, have you never properly spoken to a girl before?" Crossing her arms, she watched him, patiently waiting for him to speak.

His scowl brought a smile to her face. "Well, Jack, to put it bluntly, you're old, and I took the only thing you have left." As she spoke, her tone turned from joking to concerned. She put a smile on her face, and she was back to being sarcastic. "Did a little girl like me scare you?"

Marie took a step back in shock then regained her composure. "And you haven't killed me yet?" She looked at him specifically and said, "I would've." Then turned and continued walking to the park, Listening for his footsteps to follow hers.

Marie quickly turned toward the direction of her house and grabbed his arm. She forcefully led the way back to her home. "Do you like tea?" She asked suddenly. Not wanting to show that she felt bad for him, she added, "Your cough is too annoying for me. I have some tea back at my house."

Rushing to the kitchen, she turned on the stove and started heating the water. "Good, I only have a kettle, so it might take a while. You can sit down." She said, gesturing at the table. Once the water was hot enough, she started brewing the tea.

"Here you go." She smiled, placing the cup of tea in front of him. "Don't worry, I didn't poison it, unless you wanted me to. Then sorry that I didn't poison it." Laughing, she noticed how dark her humor could be. She shook the thoughts out of her head, and sat across from him.
