With an amused twitch of the whiskers, Cloudynose dipped his head as he slipped off to the exit, nose already in the air to scent for prey. It felt nearly too hot for any reasonable creature to be wandering about, but he supposed that so long as it benefit the clan, he shouldn't be too condescending. If Starclan offered nourishment even in these temperatures, it was something to be gracious for. Keeping Littlefeather's words in mind, he slunk off deeper into the territory.

Cloudynose followed a dying scent trail to the bank of the lake, minding his paws as he crept along the muddied ground. At the sound of a soft rustle, his tail stiffened midwave. On quiet steps he quickly flattened himself to the damp grasses along the water, wincing at the slip of mud along his stomach. It all paid off, however, when a water vole came scurrying from the brush. With one quick paw, he hooked a claw into its pelt, springing forward to deliver a finishing bite to its tiny spine.

The thrill of victory was short lived, when the taste of blood on Cloudynose's tongue gave way to the uncomfortable dripping of mire from his fur. That, and the heat bearing down on him, led to his retreat back into the trees, carrying his catch alongside him as he already dread his inevitable fate cleaning the muck from his pelt.

After a good span of time spent scouring the woods for active prey, Cloudynose reluctantly decided to cut his losses and at least contribute one meager vole to the pile. With heavy paws- both from disappointment and the burden of the heat- he head back to camp. That is, until an eruption of motion exploded from his path..! Vole now lost to memory, the warrior dashed after the direction the squirrel had gone with a stuttering gasp, leaving his previous catch to wait for his return.

It wasn't foolish- The little animal had only skipped a tree or two before it made a sharp turn for the safety of an oak trunk. The fluffy tail had almost slipped, out of reach, into the shelter of leaves above it as Cloudynose lurched for the bark. With an uncanny amount of luck, he'd caught a twitching hind leg within his jaws. Hardly believing himself, it took a moment for him to drag it downwards, only brought back into the reality of the moment by the squirrel's sharp squeal. Tail lashing excitedly, he pulled his target from its escape route, granting it the mercy of a quick death. Eyes aglow with appreciation, he head back to fetch his vole. Yes, the prey was certainly running indeed. Though, he'd have to be more careful not to stumble over such a catch next time. Starclan's blessings only ran so deep.

Having retrieved his squirrel and vole, Cloudynose padded back to camp with his jaws aching under the strain of carrying both. He hardly even minded the mud, which had quickly dried into a flaky crust over him. He had hunted well, and that alone was enough to put him in a brighter mood. It was a short trek back, and he made a beeline for the kill pile when he returned, carefully laying out his prey before stepping back to start on grooming himself.

Cloudynose had only gotten one lick over his paw in before the arrival of Beepaw, to which he responded by quickly lowering his leg. Somewhat flustered by her comment over his state, his tail swept self consciously over his dirtied toes. Still, she was right to be questioning him. Stupid warrior, going out without checking for her..! Even now, the work of mentoring could be a challenge to keep up with. Mind instantly racing to find something for them to do- since hunting had clearly been squared away, and Beepaw was never happy kept stagnant- Cloudynose anxiously kneaded at the ground before Lightningstorm's well timed suggestion.

Relieved to have found a task, even if not by himself, he rose from his sitting position to dip his head towards the deputy.

"Of course. Should I fetch him myself, or have you already spoken with him..?"

Feeling a little hotter in his pelt from more than just the heat now, Cloudynose nodded sheepishly to the other tom, wondering if you stared at the ground long enough if it would suck you down into it. "That's- That's a really good idea. As expected of you, Lightningstorm! I'll keep it in mind."

Pausing, he looked towards Beepaw, almost wondering if he should send her to do so if only to keep her restlessness at bay. No- It wouldn't take very long, and perhaps learning patience in tiny doses at a time would be... Would be good for her? Perhaps. He shook that train of thought from his head before it could distract him. He'd ponder his job as her mentor once he was on his paws on patrol. "Beepaw, ah, do you mind waiting for me to gather Battail?"

Taking note of the look on Beepaw's face, Cloudynose muttered a soft apology and a promise of: "I won't be long."

Feeling particularly antsy with his apprentice likely timing his absence, Cloudynose took a quick look around around the camp for Battail's familiar dark pelt.

On a hunch, Cloudynose crossed the distance across camp to nose his way into the warriors den, pleased to find Battail hadn't been somewhere more obscure. Only his front paws penetrating the threshold of the den, he lowered his head respectfully towards the other cat. "Hello, Battail. Um, Beepaw and I were assigned to the afternoon border patrol, and Lightningstorm suggested you come along."

Not wanting to come off as too presumptuous, even if his orders did come from higher up, Cloudynose blinked earnestly towards his clanmate. "That's okay with you, isn't it?"

Pleased at the response, Cloudynose backed out from the den, turning back to call out to Beepaw when he caught sight of her with Littlefeather. Ah, of course she would. Not wanting to interrupt, his mouth clapped shut, though he did take a few paces closer to alert the two to his return. Somewhat curious to see what the golden she-cat was up to, he remained silent as he awaited Battail's emergence, ears pricked forward with interest.

Patiently, Cloudynose relaxed back onto his haunches as Battail approached, the two of them now waiting on their final patrol member. For all the talk about hurrying, he thought to himself, here they were pausing for her instead! Of course, he could hardly find it in himself to be irritated at her filling the short spans of time by herself. Not when he knew he'd likely kept her waiting much longer just earlier!

As the other tom spoke, Cloudynose mused to himself before choosing his words. "She works really hard. That is, she wants to work all the time. And if it's for the clan, well... I can only support it. Though it does, er- Sometimes it's hard for me to keep up with!" Still watching the subject of his conversation, he tilted his head slightly before resuming in a more contemplative tone. "I guess in that way, she's not the only one learning new things."

Seeing an opportune moment to involve himself, Cloudynose approached Littlefeather to observe the apprentice from her angle. With a thoughtful nod, he looked appreciatively to the other warrior. "You're right. I couldn't have said it any better." Sometimes he wondered how he was picked to be a mentor, with so many capable cats all around him.

Somehow, Beepaw's surprise managed to afflict Cloudynose as well, causing him to jolt slightly in return when he was acknowledged. His fur quickly smoothed over as the situation worked itself out, a reassuring purr vibrating in his throat. "Not very long, I promise. It's always good to see you practicing, I couldn't bring myself to interrupt all at once." Smothering the rest of his words down before he could start rambling, he gestured with the flick of an ear towards Battail.

"We're all set to go, if you're done. Uh, sorry, Littlefeather. For cutting this short."

Eyes flickering between the two cats, Cloudynose hesitantly began to lead the way to the camp exit, recalling Lightningstorm's words with only short delay. "Um.. Ah, yes, the east border. I trust we can all manage it. He didn't really say anything about remarking, so I suppose we'll have to keep that in mind as we patrol. Just in case."

Having confirmed it was okay to lead the two out, Cloudynose's stiffened muscles relaxed, and he broke into an easy but brisk pace towards their destination. Despite his time in camp being so brief, it was still nice to return to the foliage of the territory, even if sun was making the atmosphere feel a little heavier to bear.

"I think this is the hottest day we've had since last season."

As the three padded uphill towards the border, Cloudynose's ears rotated backwards towards his clanmates, feeling a niggling sense of curiosity as well to hear Battail speak. He hadn't been clanborn like the other cats around him, and was less intimately familiar with their lives than other members of the group may be. Though it wasn't particularly held against him, he was aware that he knew very little about his fellow warriors. He couldn't help but listen in when it came to picking up more tidbits about the cats he now lived with.

The call to gather wasn't unusual, but still managed to scare Softpaw out of her fur half the time. Intrigued with a small beetle she'd found scuttling by her nest, the call to attention elicited a small yelp from her, tail puffing up. With a frantic glance around the apprentice's den, she was relieved to see she hadn't caught anyone's eye, successfully preserving the scraps of dignity she had left. On nervous paws, she padded from the den, hovering near its entrance as she eyed the highrock.

I love it soo sososo much

I aspire to write like the both of you tbh

    i didn't see this till right now but i wanted to say i love your writing just as much ;w;

i'm afraid im terrible at like... Big Plots though, so i can't supply a lot of ideas. like in my old clan all the plots came from personal drama between a bunch of cats, but to include everyone means you have to think in broader terms, and it's a lot more difficult :x

maybe there could be an external threat like sunnbeep said, but what would that even be? are there any predators that could be put to use?

As the border came into view, Cloudynose slowed the pace, raising his muzzle against a slight breeze that came their way, offering brief relief from the overbearing sun. With his head already raised, he peered back at his clanmates, apologetically interjecting. "I can go ahead and check the strength of our markers, if you two would like to move ahead a bit. Oh- I would be right back with you, of course, I just don't want to step on anyone's paws."

He figured it was a decent enough division, even if only for a moment, since Beepaw seemed to want to discuss with Battail further.
