It turned out he was one of the first wolves to the dining hall, not that he minded. As long as he didn't miss breakfast, Niko didn't care if he arrived first or last. Picking his normal seat, towards the end of the table where his best friend Nydia normally sat he was greeted with the scent of savory, fulsomely gamey meat. In response the man's stomach rumbled as he sat, absentmindedly picking up a fork to twirl in his fingers while he waited for the rest of the pack. First in came Autumn, taking the seat to his right, and not at her usual spot at the head of the table. Not that he minded. Immediately he could scent the stress rolling off her in waves, and for a moment he racked his brain of something to say to her. Anything to help his friend take her mind off the pack stresses for a little while. "If my pack had survived I may be in her position. Trying to run a pack." At the thought the carefree male shuddered.
He respected and admired Autumn immensely, got along well with her and generally liked her company; but it unnerved him to think that in another life he would be running a pack. "Breakfast smells great." He finally blurted out somewhat lamely. While he got a smile at his comment, the stress didn't seem to lessen- if anything the alpha seemed more stressed. Figuring to let her be for now, Niko would check in with her later to see if there was anything that he could help her with, the male leaned back in his chair- grunting a good morning as Zenith strolled into the place. As far as the beta went, Nikolai didn't know him all too entirely well. He knew that some of the pack members were scared by his quiet, and sometimes fierce demeanor but Nikolai wasn't one. He appreciated the fact that Zenith took his job so seriously. Someone had to step up to roles of power and since Nikolai wasn't sure that kind of role befitted him, the male was more than happy to let Zenith do as such. "Morning." Nikki chirped as Zenith sat a few chairs down from him. At this point his stomach was rumbling, but he made no indication of this.
Food was scarce and he didn't want to be drooling at the table over the scraps like a child. Next in was the new broody, apathetic wolf who'd joined only two days ago. This was a mystery for Nikolai; the new wolf, Atticus, had been hanging around the territory for close to four months, but every time Autumn had extended him a place in the pack ranks he'd turned her down. And turned her down was putting it nicely. Atticus was aggressive, defensive, and seemed to hate packs with a sort of passion that made Nikolai wonder exactly just where he was coming from. From the couple times Nikki had seen him around the pack quarters, he had noted a few scars that looked like they were inflicted from fights with probably other wolves. The tattooed brunette was obviously uncomfortable around wolves which really went against their social nature. So, Nikolai had concluded that somewhere in his pack he'd either been an omega in an abusive pack- or just was an outsider to an abusive pack. That's why as the other, lankier male passed Niko offered a broad grin and a friendly wink.
As Atticus sat down on the empty, other side of the table he kept his head low avoiding eye contact; and the desire to befriend the other male stirred once again in Niko's veins. "Hey, Atticus right? Have you seen the territory yet? Wanna go see it?" Leaning forward, trying to include the other male Niko's whispered question was ignored. Equating it to, Atti' was uncomfortable in large pack settings Niko leaned back and let him be. The next wolf in was Lyric, which Nikolai offered a thin smile. It wasn't that he disliked the redhead, simply that she kind of intimidated him with her bold flirtations and loud, confident ways. Don't get him wrong, Nikolai was thrilled that they had such a confident, out going pack member; just he was as little too meek for that and easily got flustered when she turned her flirtatious humor on him. There was still no sign of Nydia and a sprig of concern welled in his chest. She had always been small, and prone to getting colds and whatnot;and with the weather turning colder he hoped she was feeling alright. A few quiet conversations were being had though Niko paid no attention to it.
Instead his gaze would flicker towards the door every few moments; brow furrowing when his best friend failed to show up. Finally the door banged open revealing the missing omega and Nikolai felt a small smile touch on his lips. The seat to his left was still empty and Nydia made short work of jogging over to it, slumping down with a relieved sigh. She looked... Different Nikolai realized as his gaze swept over her. Her dark brown eyes, almost black in color were rimmed with a bit of makeup while her hair was nicely brushed and the look was completed with a mid-thigh length, navy blue lacy dress. "Who're you trying to impress?" Niko teased, raising an eyebrow at her. Nydia flushed almost crimson and stammered that she was an adult and entitled to wear makeup if she so wanted. However, the easy, laid-back atmosphere of the dining hall was changed as abruptly as a Nor'Easter; it started when he could of sworn he heard the faintest whisper of his name mentally though could place who said it; or if he was imagining it.
Then, beside him Nydia tensed and glancing over he noted her face absolutely fall. What was going on? "Nydia?" He asked her, telepathically as he was concerned someone had done something to her. If his slender brunette friend heard, she didn't answer and feeling unnerved Nikolai didn't push the manner. Instead, breakfast continued in the normal fashion. Autumn got her bowl first, took a bite and then Zenith went up for his. Once he had started Niko, Atti', and Lyric went up for their fill. The male was quick to get back to his seat and shove a bite into his mouth so Nydia could go up. Silence was the only thing that crackled in the dining hall for a little bit until Nydia, having gotten her food and had taken a small bite turned to him, her face weary. "Good morning Niko. Did you sleep well?" Shrugging his shoulders, offering a beaming smile to maybe cover some of the tension in the dining hall he nodded. "Yeah, I did. Well as I ever do." He joked, shoveling another bite of soup into his mouth. The awkward tension which had been boiling since Nydia walked in came to a head when he heard Autumn's telepathic "Sh!t."
And the second she was done with her food hurried outside leaving the rest of the pack in a quiet stupor. Nikolai finished not soon after, mostly because he was hungry and had wolfed his food down while mentally being smug for his play on words. Nydia had hardly eaten before giving her bowl to the newbie Atticus who glared levelly at her before snatching it from her. Atticus then set to work on it, hunching over the bowls and practically inhaling them. Nikolai was equal parts disgusted, concerned, and awed by how fast Atticus was eating. For awhile he sat there, leaned back with his arms crossed over his chest lost in thought. Should he have gone after Autumn? He had kind of thought that she wanted to be alone but when her lonesome howl drifted towards him, echoing over Misted Woods' decent sized territory he felt... Unsure. Something seemed to be upsetting her- but he had no idea what it was. He had sensed her nervousness, and stress whenever she walked into a room lately but he had equated it to the normal feelings of taking over a pack. Perhaps Nikki was wrong. Unbeknownst to him, a frown had settled on Nikolai's lips the longer he thought about it.
Maybe they all just needed a day to only relax. To bond with one another, help assimilate everyone into this new regime led by Autumn. Do pack building excersises, then all just relax together and watch a movie. His vote went for The Last Unicorn. That movie was a masterpiece and the grandaddy of animation films. Niko had grown up watching that movie. "Whats on the agenda for today?" Nydia soft, velvety voice trickled into the room, jerking Nikolai from his thoughts. Leaning forward as Zenith replied with a simple, "I want to take a few Wolves to patrol our territory. Stress is high among us.. I think it will put us at ease for a bit once we know Humans aren't near an attack... Yet.." That was one part of the problem, but Nikolai felt that some of the tension was also natural and would only be ebbed with time. They had a new alpha, ranks were all jumbled up and on top of that it was the age when wolves began finding their life-mate and settling down. So much was happening in such a short time- though he did agree that the knowledge of knowing hunters weren't in their territory would lessen the stress.
However, he perked up as Zenith added that he'd like to also have a few hunting groups go out. Slinging a cheerful arm around Nydia's shoulders, Nikolai piped up almost immediately "Well go hunting." Feeling Nydia squirm he let her go, offering a charming grin. The thing about Niko was, he was a very touchy-feely person; though normally no one had any problems with it. Letting her go the male turned his bright gaze to the beta, a silent plea there. He had gone patrolling the past few times and hunting with friends in small groups would also bring him some relief. Nydia was just one of the better hunters of the group so it made sense that she tag along to whatever hunting party there was going to be.And while Nikolai was a better fighter than hunter- he wasn't shabby at bringing down a few elk for dinner. However, he sobered up somewhat quickly as his gaze once again drifted to the door. "Do you think Autumns going to be okay? She may need some space but it could be dangerous out there. God forbid she run into hunters." It was always a fear of his, hunters that was. Nikolai knew full well the destruction they could deal a pack.
