“Thank you,” Virginia said in return. Maybe with John’s help, she could get herself under control. “It might be better if we worked on my powers at my house, there’s a lot of land and much smaller chance of being caught.” If they were out in the fields or the woods, then maybe they could avoid a repeat incident.

Lafayette nodded as they passed the ticket taker. “Of course, thank you for your company, mon ami.”

“Okay,” Virginia agreed. She was relieved she wasn’t going to have to face this alone.

Lafayette led her to the theatre and opened the door. “After you, mon ami.” He was thankful to have a break from hero duties where he could just relax with his friend.

Virginia decided to vent a little. “Since last night, I can feel my powers almost humming beneath my fingertips. It’s almost like I flipped a switch and now I feel like I can barely contain the energy.” She was scared, her powers were deadly if they weren’t carefully controlled.

Lafayette took his seat and propped the popcorn up on the armrest in between them. “I’ve heard that this movie was voted the worst horror film of this year, in any case, a movie that bad is always best viewed with friends.” A bad movie was always fun to watch in the company of others.

Lafayette lifted the tent flap slightly, to allow the sound of his voice to carry better inside the tent. “General Washington?” He called.

Virginia took both of his hands in hers in an attempt to comfort him. “Don’t apologize, this isn’t your fault. Circumstance just dealt us a bad hand,” she assured.

Virginia wasn’t convinced. She was going to try not hurt anyone, but she really had no control. “Just promise me that you’ll stay out of my line of fire.” If she hurt John, she’d never forgive herself.

Lafayette nodded. “Maybe we could even make a game out of it,” he suggested. That was one way to make a good time a great time.

Lafayette moved the flap out of the way and led Aurora the rest of the way into the tent. “Bonjour, General, I’m sure you’ve met Aurora Lancaster before?” He asked, gesturing to Aurora.

Virginia nodded. “At least we’re together,” she echoed. She supposed nothing else mattered as long as that was true.

Virginia couldn’t feel relieved. Out of all of the superheroes in the city, she was one of the few that had the power to kill. “It might be best if you stayed back too,” she added. If she kept some distance in between them, then maybe she’d be able to keep him safe an extra little bit.

Lafayette shrugged. “Maybe, every time one of the characters does something stupid, we could take turns trying to throw popcorn into each other’s mouths,” he suggested.

Lafayette nodded. “Oui, and she did a marvelous job,” he boasted, allowing his chest to puff with pride. “But, that isn’t what we came here for,” he said, looking to Aurora for support, “I have asked Miss Lancaster to become my wife.”

Virginia reached up and gently placed her hand over his. “And I love you.” She was determined to be the best wife to him she could be.

“I just don’t want to hurt you. I don’t know exactly what will happen once I try test my limits again,” Virginia explained. The last time she’d done that, she’d inadvertently frozen her own heart.

Lafayette smiled once he had her agreement. “I’ll go first,” he decided, “And once I see something I deem to be stupid and take my shot, then it’s your turn, mon ami.”

Shadowblaze laughed. “Don’t get too torn up, Dunlinstorm, there’s plenty of ferns in the forest,” he chuckled. He looked between Kindlefern and Dunlinstorm with amusement.

When Kindlefern rested her tail across Dunlinstorm’s shoulders, he laughed again. “Careful there, Kindlefern, Dunlinstorm’s ”true mate” might get jealous,” he said, nodding to the fern.

Lightningfoot breathed a sigh of relief when he finished his heavy task. He took a moment to collect himself and found his thoughts wandering back to the petaling. He felt a pang of longing when he looked back at the pillar he’d just finished aligning. He’d love to participate in a petaling with his true mate. Hopefully soon, but not yet.

Batpaw crinkled her nose. She flashed Minkpaw an incredulous look. “No, I need a mate like a rabbit hole needs a rainy day,” she quipped. She wasn’t surprised Minkpaw was starry eyed at the prospect of a true mate, Minkpaw had always been sweet and gentle like that. She however, was not.

“Don’t you ever wonder what happens when a cat resists that kind of life?” She asked. In her mind, she was going to do just fine on her own. It might even make her a better warrior.

Vulturestone finished his job, then stopped to look around the bustling camp. Ideally, he’d be able to find something else to do, but instead he spied his apprentice. He remembered that the young tom hadn’t been to very many petalings yet, so the experience was pretty new for him. “Adderpaw!” He called, as he started to make his way across the camp to the younger tom.

Virginia let out a frustrated huff. “But it’s more serious than that, if you get caught in the crossfire it could kill you,” she cautioned. Somehow the thought of hurting John was a worse sting that potentially destroying the city.

Lafayette leaned back into his seat when the previews started. He had the urge to start early when a commercial for an even worse looking horror movie played, but he resisted it.

Lafayette nodded. “Oui, that way nothing will get in the way of our wedding,” he explained. He was determined to come back alive because, in his eyes, that was the only thing that could get in their way.

(Maybe, but Washington could also be Lafayette’s best man)

Virginia sighed. “Me not being able to help it won’t be a good enough excuse if I hurt you,” she insisted, “just promise me that if things go south, you’ll save yourself.”

Lafayette wasn’t really phased by horror, especially bad horror. He’d seen his share of campy horror movies back home in France, so most things wouldn’t make him bat an eye. He let his first piece of popcorn fly when the plucky protagonists decided to seek help at the old abandoned house when their car broke down.

Virginia began making her way back toward the main house to met him when he got there. Whatever happened, she’d do her best to keep him safe.

Lafayette smirked and let out his own little chuckle. Cliches were always stupid in his opinion, he couldn’t pass that opportunity up. Now the ball was in Rory’s court.

Lafayette nodded his own agreement. “The “tom cat” is certainly a hand full, whoever she is, his bride will be a force to be reckoned with,” he joked. He smiled at Aurora, “Or perhaps he will be lucky enough to marry an angel, like mon amour .”

Virginia suppressed the urge to run to him, instead choosing to approach him slowly. “John,” she breathed, failing to hide the relief in her voice.

Lafayette nearly choked laughing at the jump scare/popcorn combo. He only quieted when the person in front of them glared at him.
