She sighed, pausing for another moment to contemplate his words. He seemed like a good, honest dog, and she found that she didn't have the heart to turn him away for something that was out of his control.
"You may stay," she decided. "But keep careful watch for these hunters of yours. If they come looking for you here, leave immediately."
With a decisive nod, she added, "Make yourself at home."
At this point, the sun was passing its peak. Topaz's fur was still damp from her swim, so it should last her through the rest of the heat. Turning to find someone to hunt with, she spotted Zorran.
"Zorran, would you accompany me on a hunt?" she inquired, watching him with unreadable eyes.

Vortex

Vortex continued after the butterfly, eyes wide with fascination. Sometimes it would rise higher into the air, and she would halt, disappointed. But then it would float back down, and she would follow it once more.
Not watching anything other than the white-winged insect, she didn't realize that she was stumbling straight towards the lake. The scent of water might have snagged her attention had she not been so fixated on the wonder that was the butterfly.
Without warning, her foot hit something soft, and she looked down at the last possible second to see that it was a small white dog. With a shocked yelp, she tripped over Prince Royce and landed in the water in front of him with a splash. The wave of water that washed over the shore was enormous in comparison to the young male. As the drenched she-dog sat up in the shallows, blinking water out of her eyes, her heavy chain collar jangled raucously around her neck.
