He opened the secret door and stepped out into the world, looking for any other people. He was 14 years old, with dark brown hair and sea green eyes. He was tall and thin, but surprisingly strong.
-
He was inquisitive, protective and quite generous.
-
He looked out over the verdant forests of the green quadrant from the cave mouth. He was still finding it difficult to see. Being underground for so long can do that to a person. He had lived for the past year in the subterranean caves and caverns in this mountain for a whole year, not coming to the surface once, living off the blind fish from the underground lake. But now he was ready to come out again.
-
He sealed the door and strode off down the mountainside, through the forest. Gradually wolves fell in behind him. "Ah, so I haven't lost that talent yet. Good," he said to himself.
Night was drawing in so he found a cave, checked whether anything was living in it and camouflaged it as he had learned to do in previous years. Then he walked in and lay down to sleep, his new pack around him keeping him warm. As his eye closed he thought, "Well here I am. New world, new people, new rules. This could be fun." Then he fell asleep and flew far, far to the world of dreams, leaving his material self behind him. -
In his dreams there were three others.
-
As he looked, he saw that one was himself. The other two looked vaguely familiar, somehow. Either he had met them long ago or was going to meet them, he decided.
-
Another joined them. She was about average height and looked about 16. Altogether, there were two boys and two girls in this group. Dave was surprised to see himself talking to them, for he was quite reclusive and didn't usually go near other people. He was wearing his usual clothes, though

Dave awoke in his shelter in the green quadrant, his pack around him. He crawled out into the forest and stretched.
-
They set out through the forest, looking for food. Suddenly, one of the outrunners bounded back towards them. He had found an elk drinking from a nearby river! As one, Dave and the pack crept towards the river, fanning out as they did so to try and surround the prey. Dave drew his slate knife and held it ready as he snuck towards the unsuspecting elk.
-
They were within five feet of the elk when it's head snapped up and it wheeled around and bolted. The pack ran after it. They ran through the forest, dodging trees and leaping over rocks and narrow ravines, closing the gap between them and the prey. When the lead wolf was about three tail-lengths from the prey, he leaped, landing on it's back and sinking his teeth deep into it's neck. This made time for the other wolves to catch up and help to bring it down. When it had stopped struggling they got off and gave it room. The pack leader walked in front of it and made eye contact, then dropped his eyes to show respect to the magnificent beast, then bit down on it's neck. The light went from it's eyes, and the hunt was over.
-
It had been a good hunt. Normally it would take a lot longer to pin down an elk, or it would get away. The pack gathered around and ate it, each getting his proper share. Afterwards, Dave took the bones to make stuff with.
-
Dave decided to make a bow. It would make hunting easier and quicker, and mean he could hunt more types of prey. He spent a couple of hours finding a yew tree and a couple more making twine from long grass fibers. Then he made a bow. He made oak arrows with raven feather fletching and fire hardened them. Then he made a quiver out of elk skin he had saved.
-
Dave's in the green quadrant.
-
Near the edge of the arctic quadrant.
-
Dave decided to explore away from his pack's territory. He wasn't ready for the cold of arctic quadrant yet though, nor the heat of the desert quadrant. He decided that the tropical quadrant would be more like hiss home. He started getting ready for the journey.
-
The wolf hit the ground with a sickening crunch. Dave felt his blood begin to boil and a red mist descended on his eyes. He whipped out his new bow and fired repeatedly in the pterodactyl's direction. it thudded to the ground. He shot his last arrow into it's head, just to make sure. Then the red mist lifted and he noticed that he'd wasted most of his arrows. "Have to get this temper under control," he said to himself.
-
He walked over to the body of the dead wolf and knelt and wept. He quickly dried his tears and dug dirt over the body so that the flys wouldn't get it.
-
"Of course!" Dave said, and imagined himself more arrows, this time stone-tipped.
