Echosky bounded up to the young she-cat and asked her what was wrong. "My paw," Amberpaw explained. "I have a few pieces of wood, splinters, in my toe pads." Echosky nodded and turned to Leafstar. "I need to go and find some herbs, and some cobwebs. Could you stay here, with Amberpaw?"

    Echosky turned her nose to the ground and followed the scents she thought would be herbs. During the time Russetwing had arrived and the strange cat had left, she'd found horsetail, ragwort leaves, cobwebs, goldenrod, blackberry leaves, comfrey root and dock. She was quite happy with the lot, and placed assortments based on the different treatments the cats might need, on long, thick leaves she'd found.

    IC~ Lilyswan sat by a pond in the milky-way forests of StarClan. She batted at the water with the tip of her tail, wallowing in the lonesome that occupied her thoughts.

    Mallowfur's impatience for her second litter's arrival almost matched her desire to sleep. She was exhausted by the constant worry that accompanied being a queen. In her last litter, which had consisted of only Eclipsepaw, she had most nothing to worry about. The medicine cat had said she was perfectly healthy, and she hadn't lost a wink of sleep. However, now that Solarheart's leg was becoming increasingly worse, she worried for him, which in turn added more stress to her own life. Her tail moved from side to side, swishing fallen leaves in front of Brightdawn's amused form.


    "You're just asking for trouble," she remarked, making Mallowfur jump. "Oh, relax. It's only me. I just wanted to ask how you were feeling before I took Elusivepaw out for a bit of battle training." Mallowfur's bristled fur lowered. "Sorry, I was lost in thought. I'm fine, Brightdawn. I'll see you when you get back." Brighton nodded, and licked her sister's ear before going off to find her apprentice.

    Echosky beckoned Amberpaw. "Lie down, right here, and show me that poor paw of yours." Amberpaw did exactly as she was told, and Echosky could only flick her tail in disappointment. "This is going to hurt," she warned. "And the wounds won't heal easily. You won't be able to do much for at least a quarter-moon." Amberpaw's eyes widened. "A quarter-moon?" Echosky nodded. "I'm sorry, Amberpaw, but that's the way it has to be if you still want to walk, run, fight and hunt properly." Without warning, she ducked in and pulled out the largest splinter. Amberpaw yowled, again, but louder this time. "Ow," she cried out. "That hurt, Echosky."
