Sparrowclaw blinked, taken aback by surprise. Yet, he knew that this conversation was inevitable. Sighing, he sat down. With a wave of his tail, he beckoned for Echolight to come and sit.
"Her name was Leafsong...she and I were born about a half-moon apart. We were very close. She was probably the most beautiful cat in the camp. She was happy, funny, and kind. She loved squirrel. She had a cinnamon coat and blue eyes...." the facts were flowing faster now, like a torrential river of memory. "She hated sand between her paws. She liked adventure. When we were kits, we went to an old fox den." Pausing, he reminisced. The reek of fox seemed to come back. Leafsong at his side, they were both shaking against each other. He continued. "It was abandoned, but we got into trouble because my littermate told my mother."
"Eventually, we became mates. What a contrast! I was always serious and ambitious, but she brought out the light in me..." he gestured, and grimaced, for the unbearable truth was about to slip out. Blinking, he continued. "My father was HawkClan, and my mother was ThunderClan. When she grew pregnant, he left her. After my warrior ceremony, he came back to claim me and my littermates. We resisted, but he blackmailed us into coming with him. The blackmail was Leafsong's death..." he swallowed and looked away.
"He killed her anyway, even after I came along. We fought...and I won." he bowed his head.
"I am my father's murderer." looking at Echolight again, he stared with a hollow intensity. "I'm guilty." his confession grew dry in his mouth, and the pile of prey next to him seemed distant. "I am not full ThunderClan blood. Just a HalfClan bastard who got revenge."
"Forgive me," he meowed, voice rusty and grating. He seemed deflated again, and he considered making a run for it, right then and there. He banished all thoughts of a future with Echolight now that the ugly truth had come out. He knew now that he had started falling in love with her. Who wouldn't? Her pearly green eyes and beautiful features would make any tom look twice, and her hunting prowess was beyond amazing.
I owe it to Leafsong. She gave her life because of me.... Meekly, he pictured fear, disgust, and horror reflected in Echolight's eyes. Accepting fate, he started walking back to the camp, tail dragging and sifting on the dappled forest floor.
