"Oh, I forgot. I'm quite scatterbrained today," Pebble mewed with a laugh. "But anyway," she continued, her spirits darkening. "I'm very sorry for yours, and RiverClan's, loss. I'm sure Ravensoul was a great deputy."

"To be honest, I'm not sure if I've seen the moonstone or not," said Pebble. "I've traveled all throughout this forest, and I may have passed by it without notice. Where is it? What does it look like? "
-
Pebble had never heard of this 'StarClan' before. Was it like RiverClan? Were they too far away to communicate with normally?
"What's StarClan?" asked Pebble. "Are they from around here?" -
Shady continued to laugh mockingly. "How do you manage to fail that badly at climbing?" he jeered. The smoky kit reassured himself that he would never be that clumsy.
-
Shady giggled at Galaxykit's impersonation.

StarClan sounded like a wonderful place. Pebble arched her head up and gazed through a small crevice in the nursery ceiling. The sky had darkened, and little points of light twinkled across the horizon. She had gained a fresh new perspective on the night sky. Those points of light were fallen warriors, watching over the clans from above. She reflected upon this new idea in silence and awe. Perhaps that tiny little sparkle was her beloved Fleck. And maybe those two larger stars, forever resting side by side, were her mother and father. Maybe all the stars in the sky were her ancestors, going back millions of years. Was every creature somehow related to one another? Interconnected in one great family? Suddenly she felt closer to Eeltail. Her new friend no doubt shared at least a drop of her blood, no matter how distant they were as relatives.
Pebble only managed to utter a single word. "Whoa..." she whispered. -
Shady noticed a fellow kit sitting by his side. He hadn't met him yet, and decided to give him a friendly greeting.
"Hey there," he mewed. -
"Fascinating, isn't it?"
Pebble began to wonder more about the stars. There were so many of them, and they seemed to stretch on endlessly. Did the sky have a limit? Would there be enough room for her when it came time to join their ranks? What was it like up there? Pebble wondered about what would happen on her journey to StarClan. As a loner, death had stared her in the eye every day. But until now she had never thought about what would happen after it. She imagined watching her son from above, proud of what he had become. Shady would hopefully be a warrior by the time she passed on. She desperately prayed that she wouldn't outlive him. Would he have a mate? Kits? Would he grow up to be strong, brave, noble, and loyal? As she thought about all these questions, she let out a big yawn, feeling quite sleepy. She nestled into her clanmate's belly, like she had done to her mother when she was young. Pebble let out a deep breath. The calm murmur of the river and the feel of Eeltail's soft fur gently lulled her to sleep. -
"My name is Shady. What's yours?" he asked.
-
Pebble had sweet, calm dreams throughout the night.
She awakened to chirping birds and warm light seeping in through the nursery entrance. As she drowsily stumbled to her feet, she yawned and stretched her muscles. The golden-brown she-cat glanced towards the crevice in the ceiling, seeing that the stars were no longer there. She had seen the sky cycle through day and night countless times, so this wasn't much of a surprise. But now she couldn't help but wonder if her ancestors were still watching over her, even in the daytime.
Pebble nudged Eeltail with her paw. "Good morning!" she mewed with a kindhearted smile. -
"How's it going, Falconkit?" asked Shady.
-
When's the due date for this contest?
-
"I wonder what story we're going to hear," he mused.
-
"That sounds good," mewed Pebble, licking her chops. "I'm starved!"
-
Shady was very intrigued by this story. He had seen small twoleg neighborhoods before, but never an entire city of them. The black tomkit listened with pricked up ears.
-
Curious to see if Eeltail was right, Pebble picked a water vole from the top of the pile. She took a bite, savoring the tender, juicy meat. "Mmm!" she acclaimed. "This is so much better than fish."
-
"Oh," Pebble mewed, sounding uncertain. She had never heard of Greyspeck or Blackstream before. She assumed they were fellow RiverClan members. "Have the kits been born yet?"
-
When do the olympics end?
-
"Hmm," Pebble mused. She guessed that WindClan was another group of cats around here. Slowly the pieces of the forest's puzzle were falling into place. "I'm sure they make a very cute couple. I wish them the best with their new litter!" As a former loner, Pebble was unfamiliar with the warrior code. She had no idea if cats from other clans were allowed to interbreed.
-
Pebble's face began to drop. "That's such a shame," she mewed sadly. "Who will the kittens live with? Where will their allegiance lie?"
