A minute ago the skies were clear and blue, so where did all this rain come from? Running into the nearest bus stop station, Nathan clutched a hand to his chest as he panted to catch his breath. Well wasn’t this just his luck? He hadn’t had time this morning to watch the news before leaving the house, but from the way the morning looked he figured that he wouldn’t even need to worry about one; shame to say that he was completely wrong. At this rate he wasn’t sure when the rain would stop and now there was no mistake that he was going to be late for school. Nathan had always hated being late for classes, it was always a pet peeve of his in a way. Tardiness wasn’t etched into his DNA and he wasn’t going to have it be now, but he couldn’t just go back out there in the rainfall and risk it. With a heavy sigh, he looked down at his watch and it read seven thirty meaning he only had a half hour to get to school.
“Well I’m only six blocks away and if the rain lets up then I’m sure I could make it there if I ran.” He mumbled a logical solution under his breath to keep himself from panicking over it too much, but just looking at the sight of the rain falling even harder than before was not doing much for his nerves. Biting down on his lower lip, Nathan took a good step back when the bus water, that would definitely be the worst. He noticed the back doors of the bus opening and stepping out he noticed a familiar face. His name was James Parker and literally the only thing worth looking at at school. Unlike Nathan who was quiet and only stuck to a very few number of friends, James was well liked and known by everyone. He didn’t know him personally only through the comments and gushing done by his friends. Still, that did not stop his cerulean eyes from watching and constantly searching for him whenever he felt too out of reach. It was safe to say that Nathan had a crush on him, but he wasn’t sure how deep that crush was or how deep it could possibly get.
Gripping tight on the strap of his backpack, his eyes quickly shifted off the side when he found himself staring for too long. Good job Nathan. He thought begrudgingly as he tried not to show it too much on his face. As the bus finally drove off, he watched from the corner of his eye wondering why the other hadn’t left yet. Even without turning his full attention to him he could still feel James presence. So close, yet so far away; this definitely felt like some kind of torture. Gripping even tighter Nathan cleared his throat in the most obnoxious way possible just to get his attention. “Y-you’re going to be late if you don’t get out of here.” Damning himself for the small stutter, but hoping that he hadn’t noticed much.
“So are you.” He replied crisply, he could practically hear the smile in his voice. “Forgot your umbrella?” He then asked curiously, which made Nathan just shrug his shoulders impassively.
“I didn’t think it was going to rain from the way it looked this morning.” He was sure that his face was flushed from embarrassment, but even if it was the other didn’t say anything about whatsoever much to his relief. Still he couldn’t help feeling the curiosity creeping up in the pit of his stomach. Nathan had noticed the umbrella in James’ hand so why was he still here? Unless… “Are you waiting for your girlfriend?” The question left his lips in a small whisper because he was almost regretting asking. From what he knew James didn’t have one or at least that was one of the many rumors that was leaking around, but that didn’t stop other people from falling in love with him.
The long scary pause made him severely uncomfortable as he shifted his weight and scratched the back of his neck. “N-not that it’s any of my business, man. I mean you always have girls falling head over heels for you so like it wouldn’t be surprising or anything I mean.” As soon as he said it, the words barely made any sense. He felt like he was having one bad experience after the other. Could this be any worse?
“No.” James replied coolly, which made Nathan jump at the sound of his voice. “I don’t have a girlfriend, but I do have someone I like.” That seemed to catch Nathan’s full attention now that he was looking at him for the first time since he had arrived. James just chuckled and opened up his umbrella as he held it above Nathan’s head. The umbrella was slightly crooked and leaned more to one side than the other, but still it looked safe depending on how it was held. “It’s not much, but I’m sure it will keep you safe. Come on, if we stand here any longer then we’ll really be late.”
For a moment, he had completely forgotten about school. This was literally the most that he had ever spoken to James. Maybe he should be thankful for his shitty luck, but he still wanted to know more about the mystery person that he liked. He couldn’t put his finger on it or maybe it was someone who went to a completely different school or a childhood friend that no one was aware. Just the possibilities were completely endless. As they walked down the street side by side, James had insisted that Nathan should keep close if he wanted to stay dry. Definitely a lucky day. He was so close that he could practically smell the shampoo from his hair and notice the small features of his face like the small tiny birthmark under his brow.
“So what’s this person like?”
“Who?”
“The one you like!” The words came out a little bit more impatiently than he would have liked.
“Ah right. Well this person is definitely cute and smart, but kind of reserved and quiet. My eyes are always following them wherever they go and I get that gut feeling that if I let my eyes leave them for one second then I will lose them. I haven’t really mustered up the courage to talk to them yet.”
The more he described his crush, the sicker he was feeling in his stomach. Here he was walking beside the guy he wished he could have, but never could. It was like a sick twisted joke of some kind, but still, Nathan played it off indifferently. “Must be a lucky girl, I bet she really likes you and you should definitely tell her how you feel. What’s the worst that could happen?” He paused for a minute the spoke again, “Okay, yeah she could reject you, but at least she’ll know, right?”
“True, but I’m sure when push comes to shove I’ll freeze up. All I’ll want to do is kiss them.”
One more block; that’s all that they had left in their walk together and he was sure that was all his heart could take. Even though Nathan knew that his feelings couldn’t evolve into anything more than a simple infatuation, part of his still hoped that maybe someday he could have a single chance. The remainder of the walk they were silent, Nathan want to hear anymore and James didn’t bother prying asking what was wrong. As soon as they got to the front of school, he looked down as his watch again. Seven fifty five; at least that was enough to get to homeroom and have a seat.
“We-well, we better to homeroom. We were lucky enough that he got here and at this time…” Without looking up at him Nathan whispered a small thanks and hurried up the stairs. Reaching to open the door, he was stopped by a hand that completely covered his own. He didn’t have to look to see who it was. “Come on, quit messing around. We’re really going to be late.”
“I’m not messing around.” His voice suddenly became dead serious as he used his hand to turn Nathan’s face toward him. Looking into his eyes for a brief moment, James leaned in and planted a small kiss on Nathan’s lips. It was sweet and innocent, but it was enough to leave Nathan breathless. “I like you.” He whispered soft enough for only him to hear. James didn’t wait for a reply or didn’t even bother asking him if he liked him. All he did was open the door and walk past Nathan without looking back.
Staring off into space, it took his brain a minute to finally catch up with what just happened. Instantly his cheeks turned scarlet as a single finger brushed against his lips. “Oh my god…” Was all that he managed to get out; Nathan could hear the school bell ring which signaled that he was late, but he didn’t care anymore. School was something that just did not matter anymore because under that crooked umbrella, his first kiss was stolen by the boy of his dreams.
