Paradisefalls was dozing in his nest. A queen had gone into labor during the night and had called for him. It had taken some time and the result was he'd been up at least half the night. He had laid down only intending for a short nap then to go collect fresh herbs but he'd fallen totally asleep. While he had Indencre to help the apprentice wasn't capable of everything, due to him disability. It left a good amount of work for him to do. He missed Periwinkle though, his mate. When they'd both been medicine cats he didn't mind the work at all as long as he was with her. But now, now she was gone and there was an emptiness in his heart he doubted he could ever fill.
He stirred as Homekit called to him. It took him a moment to separate her words from his dreams. Not that they were significant dreams, no just the ordinary type the type that made no sense and you forgot it when you woke. He blinked his eyes and glanced around his den to find the source of the voice when he saw Homekit. "Oh Homekit," he meowed but ended it with a yawn. "Yeah we can talk, something bothering you?"
-
Paradisefalls couldn't help but be cheered up by the sight of the kit, for some reason he felt close to her. She reminded him a bit of himself when he was younger, but she had more...well problems with being blind, yet she was never discouraged about it. It seemed that a more appropriate name or nickname would be Hope. He smiled at her though she couldn't see it, did it really matter if the one you smiled at saw it or not?
"Of course, you are welcome to stay with me. There is some moss just a few paces to your right. Help yourself and make a nest next to mine...or you can sleep in mine with me if you want, it's plenty big enough," he offered.
-
Paradisefalls pulled back his fluffy white tail he had curled around him when Homekit made her way to his nest. She reminded him a lot of his own kits who were about the same age. It had been a while since any of them had visited him. Since Peri's death nothing had been the same and their family had fallen apart. He was alone, alone like Homekit. When she crumpled and fell beside him he flicked his tail back to cover her like a blanket, a nice soft blanket.
He let his head down to rest on the edge of the nest and closed his eyes though he didn't fall asleep. He was tired but he was still awake so as to listen to the young cat. "After what?" he asked confused by her first two vague questions. Her next words kinda clarified but he wasn't sure it was related or not. "No you didn't tell me. So your Homepaw now," he said partially to himself. He was used to calling her Homekit, it would take some getting used to the new name. He just hoped he didn't slip up and call her kit by accident.
"I don't think many would know that, I don't. But cowards don't even try something they don't know," he said. There was a slight almost indignant tone in his voice. He had come to care for Homekit er Homepaw in the short time he'd known her and no one taking her as an apprentice seemed rather insulting to him. "Don't have anyone? Homepaw, you have me, you will always have me," he said a slight catch in his voice hinting at affection and care for the kit he had come to think of as more of his own blood. "I would teach you if I could but I already have an apprentice and assistants to teach."
-
Paradisefalls wished he could pick Homepaw and train her, if not just so he could watch over her more. But she had to grown up on her own, however painful that could be. He knew he couldn't though, he had his paws full as it was and Indencre was only half way through her training. It would be months before he could even consider such an option.
Her last words seemed to send a shaft of pain through him as he abruptly opened his eyes to look at her. As a kit he'd lost everyone except Periwinkle and even then in the end he'd lost her. As an apprentice he had lost all of his mentors and even his mother. He'd never known his father. "I wish I could promise you that you wouldn't loose me but fate has a way of changing promises like that...I lost everyone but Periwinkle when I was younger than you. I don't have all that many either, but I'd never leave you by choice. What about your parents don't you have them?" he asked. He knew Homepaw didn't have parents in SnowClan but surely they were out in the forests somewhere.
-
Paradisefalls caught the slight indication that this was a hard subject but her words confirmed it. His ears flicked back in slight horror as she explained. Who could possibly treat their kit like that. Even though their litter was forbidden even he and Peri had never rejected their kits. "I'm sorry to hear that, that is a kithood no one should have to endure," he said. He was beginning to understand why she said she had no one. That was one thing where their stories diverged in similarity. The white medicine cat's father had died before he was born, but his mother had been a near perfect mother to him and had never left him feeling alone or unwanted. To feel that way was a horrible feeling.
"Divinitapaw likes Incendre a lot too," he said. His two apprentices had fallen in love but hurtfully had broken up. He knew they still both cared for each other though. "Sorrelkit and Lotuskit are my assistants, they are pretty young, they aren't in here all the time," he said. They were assistants after all not full time apprentices of his. He fell quiet for a moment not able to shake the bit of story Homepaw had told him of her upbringing. "Homepaw...your family...they kinda don't exist in your life do they. I- well it's not the same exactly but would you like to be apart of my family, as my daughter?" he asked. Periwinkle had often adopted kits in need and cared for them. In a way he felt this was a bit of a tribute to her, but it wasn't just that reason he offered to adopt Homepaw. He genuinely cared for her.

Paradisefalls padded into the den with a mouthful of catnip. He'd been gone most of the morning as he had traveled to the two-leg homes to find the herb. The few plants that grew in their territory had been ripped up by someone leaving the only option to go to two leg place to get it or the other clans. He set down the herb and sneezed. He'd covered his nose with his paw though and lowered his paw after sneezing. "She alright?" he asked Incendre when he noticed the kits. The answer from the passed out kit was pretty clear she wasn't okay but he didn't know why.
-
Paradisefalls concerned expression flicked over to the kit who had just woken up then back to Indencre. "I hope your wrong," he said solemnly. He meant no offense by it only that the last thing they needed was a case of blackcough. More often than not it took lives. If this kit did have it there was a good chance that others in the clan might fall ill. It was contagious. "We'll have to keep her in isolation, this could spread easily. If it is blackcough I don't know if she'll make it...we'll try though," he said. He got up and padded over to the kit. "Your in my den, Hyperkit brought you here. Your going to need to stay here for a few days while we treat you," he said not wanting to worry the kit. "Do you think you can hold down some herbs?"
-
Paradisefalls sat down near the kit and stroked him twice with his fluffy tail. "You are just sick, take it easy, rest," he said. He glanced back at Indencre. "No herbs yet," he said. He wasn't sure how bad this was but it was obviously greencough. They needed to wait until Perpendicularkit was rested up and not feeling quite as sick before they could give him any herbs. They could try juniper berry but sometimes letting it take it's course did more good. "No food, just water for one day. Then we'll start treating him," he said. He would rather not wait to treat something like this but there wasn't much choice.
-
Paradisefalls watched as the kit and Incedre worked to clean out the herbs. He turned when he heard the deputy. But he hesitated to answer instead speaking to Chuggakit first. "No, I can't let you leave camp. But if you'd like to help clean up here we could use the help," he said. After Indencre's accident so many moons ago Paradisefalls rarely would ever take a kit out of camp. He turned his attention to the deputy. "Hawktalon, yes. I need to collect new herbs and get the roof of my den patched. I can use all the paws I can get to help. Now is when we should be stocking up on herbs not tossing them all out," he said. "Do you think you could find something to patch the den roof with?"
-
Paradisefalls smiled at the kit er apprentice...no at his daughter. He nuzzled her back and licked her once on the head. He couldn't imagine what it would've been like for her growing up the way she had. He couldn't change the past but he had changed how she could live now. He was purring lightly but he was tired so he couldn't muster all that much energy. He had laid his head back down, but his tail remained curled around Homepaw. Had she still been a kit he would've offered her to stay in the medicine den as his own kits had but she was an apprentice and she needed to be in the apprentices den. Not that she couldn't visit but she wouldn't live in the medicine den. "I know you'll be in the apprentices den, but you won't be alone even there. My own kits, your siblings, are apprentices right now," he said.
-
Paradisefalls smiled but didn't raise his head or open his eyes, exhaustion looming over him. "Yes you do. Two brothers and one sister. Periwinkle and I only had one litter, they are about your age. Northernpaw, your sister, only was made an apprentice the other day along with the rest of her siblings," he said. It probably was a very different idea for Homepaw to have a family, well minus a mother as Periwinkle wasn't there. But if she had been he was sure she would've welcomed Homepaw too.
-
"Perpendicularkit, relax rest, your just sick. Indencre and I will take care of you, take it easy," he said. The white medicine cat gave nothing away in his expression as he tried to comfort the kit. The bood was particularly troubling and in a case like this meant there was not much chance to help save the kit. It would take a miracle from StarClan to save him.
-
Paradisefalls looked up from washing his paw when the almost-elder came in. He turned and grabbed a very green leafy herb, lettuce. Something he'd found to be effective for headaches. He placed it in front of her. Little did he know this wasn't something he could really treat, at least not with herbs. "This should help," he said.
-
Paradisefalls frowned, he knew the herb wouldn't take immediate effect but he could tell her headache was a pretty bad one. "You are welcome to rest here in my den, it probably will be quieter than anywhere else in camp," he offered his tone a bit more hushed. Surely any loud noises would not help her headache.
-
The white medicine cat padded into the den his fur was a bit more ruffled than usual and he seemed tense. "Popstar? Simba? Hawktalon?" he called his voice a bit horse. He had been gone for an entire day, he was sure they had noticed. It seemed the other clans were out to get him specifically lately, or well at least two of them. Last time he'd sported injures from his escape. This time he'd been more lucky but lucky escapes wasn't good enough.
-
Paradisefalls was relieved Popstar was there. Not that he shouldn't be there, but it was nice to be back where it was safe and he had friends like Popstar there. "RadicalClan kidnapped me," he said. "I escaped with the help of one of their own who didn't agree with them kidnapping me, but still. First the Elite and now this. I'm scared to leave camp again," he said. He wasn't one to just be fearful but he had limited experience fighting other cats and each time he'd been attacked and taken.
-
Paradisefalls had kept a close eye on the kit during the course of the night. He was more certain than ever that it was blackcough though and he wasn't sure how much of a chance there was that the kit would live. He would try though. He picked up some catmint and juniper berries and placed them near the kit then cleaned up the area of any vomit left there still. He tried not to wake the kit.
-
Paradisefalls chuckled. "I'm glad your feeling better," he said. The kit wasn't this perky yesterday. "Try eating this," he said pushing a few herbs and a small mouse to the kit. Maybe he would make it after all. "Yes we do get this place but usually not to ourselves. Sometimes we share it with those who are ill and we are treating, like you."
-
Paradisefalls smiled at the kit, hiding his concern. Anyone at a glance would think this wasn't all that serious by how cheerful the white medicine cat seemed. Though that of course was a front so as not to worry the kit. That would be the worst thing he could do. "Oh it's pretty nice, it's an important job but it can be dangerous," he said. "Take it easy and rest up. I need to go speak with Indencre about some herbs we need to collect," he said. Then he turned from the kit and walked over to his apprentice. He didn't really need to collect herbs but it was the only excuse he could think of. "Are you alright?" he asked in a hushed tone so the kit couldn't hear. He didn't mean was Indencre sick but well he knew the young cat well enough to see something was bothering him.
-
Paradisefalls chuckled at the comment. "Your telling me. When I first smelled it I thought something had crawled into the back of my den and died. Yeah there is a good leak and it ruined all my herbs," he said.
