Zenith trotted happily through the Skulls' cave, oblivious to the dumbfounded stares and confused whispers trailing after him. Was that- was that a horse? In the cave? Among the Skulls? He stood at least three times taller than any of these cats, as he now knew them to be; he had only recently learned the correct term for their species, thanks to Col-lat-er-al-da-mage. Collat-eral-damage. Collateraldamage. He kept repeating the name to himself, as well as several other words: Skulls, cat, Omorthan. Skulls, cat, Omorthan. Etcetera, etcetera.
He had come to the Skulls accidentally. During the storm, the tornado that devoured the ground and rent the trees apart, he had bolted in fright. All the horses in his herd had, and the little foal had galloped as fast as he could in any direction, as much to escape the dangerous pounding of his family's hooves as to flee from the funnel-shaped twister. And so, wandering hopefully in search of his family in the aftermath of that horrible night, he had come upon the forest where the Skulls resided. Omorthan, a tiny creature who seemed among the largest of the cats now, had emerged from the bushes and gradually, through much confusing hand and hoof symbols, led Zenith to the cave where his herd lived.
Collateraldamage, another, smaller cat, had taught him the few words he knew. The young black horse had learned enough to ease his way into the Skulls, but he would need more, much more, if he was to live there for any length of time.
Zenith frowned and shook his head as he realized what he had been thinking. No, he told himself firmly. You are here to rest until you're ready to search for your family again. The thought made him inexplicably sad; he enjoyed it here. Glancing among the massed cats, he smiled, a toothy, coltish smile that probably seemed terrifying to anyone who looked at him then.

[fancypost borderwidth= 0px; font-family: georgia;]Vincent stared dumfoundedly at the large creature barreling through the cave system. His eyes were wide and no doubt his jaw was slack. "Da fuck?" what the hell was going on? Why was their a damn horse here?

Even though he considered himself to be a friend of the large animal (loosely, at least), the tomcat couldn't help but let out a chuckle at the sight of a horse running around in the Skull's camp. His amber eyes glanced at another male cat, and he was further amused by Vincent's reaction to the whole thing. Though it made sense that most would be confused by Zenith's presence, the young tabby rolled his eyes at the other cat's reaction, still chuckling.
His gaze turned from Vincent back to the horse, and he waved his tail lazily from where he stood. Just to let the guy know that he still knew who he was, of course. Then Damage was reminded why he was in this location of the camp--to eat that tasty sparrow at his paws--by his grumbling stomach.
It was plain to see that he wasn't concerned at all by the horse's presence, as he calmly started to eat the freshly caught prey without a hint of concern. -
[fancypost borderwidth= 0px; font-family: georgia;]Thankfully Vincent didn't notice the eye roll or he would have jumped down the cat throat. He wasn't one to enjoy impudence from cats. "How let the horse in?" he growled, the constant beat of the horses hooves against the cave floor ringing in his ears.
-
"Collateraldamage!" Zenith's huge muzzle opened in a smile as he spied one of only two cats he knew. His clumsy pronunciation was getting better, he was proud to realize, but it was still just that- clumsy. He had to stop at that one word, that one name- he knew precious little of the language- but he hoped to learn more. Much more.

Still, it wouldn't fit well to treat the horse like it was an idiot just because they couldn't communicate well from the language barrier.
His ears twitched, picking up on the slight shift into better pronunciation--it was still a bit clumsy, but more clear, so hopefully that meant that he would pick up on saying other words easier? Yet that was just a guess, as the tomcat had never run into the problem of having to teach someone a new language. Then again, everything tied to the horse would probably be guesswork until the guy learned some more words.
His amber eyes looked at Vincent, and the young Skull was a bit confused that the rest of the Clan didn't know about Zenith's arrival. Then again, he couldn't expect anyone to be omnipotent--that just didn't make sense. "He came with Omorthan," he said to the other tom, a neutral tone in his voice. -
[fancypost borderwidth= 0px; font-family: georgia;]Vincent nodded his head curtly, noticing the relationship between the two familiars. "I can only guess what trouble might result in this." he dipped his head and flashed the horse a crooked grin, to show that he meant no harm in his joke. "I'll be off now, tally-ho!" if he had a tophat, he surely would have bowed over it, but alas - he was but a cat without the knowledge of such accessory and was left to make a sweeping gesture with his long tail before exiting the near vicinity of the noisy animal.
-
Zenith danced in excitement at the chance to learn more words. Carefully, though- no reason to crush the cats underhoof. "Hay! Gud. Toooooo. Seee. Yooooo." The 'ooo' sounds of the two words were difficult, but they were all short words, so he didn't have much trouble. Zenith peered curiously at Collateraldamage, ignoring the other cat, to find out what the words meant.

Waving goodbye to the other tomcat with his tail, the young Skull turned to look at the horse again, his whiskers twitching in slight amusement at the odd pronunciation. But then he realized that the horse was looking at him expectantly, like he wanted him to... Oh! Yes, defining them was what Zenith wanted.
Eh... how do I explain all these? he questioned himself, taking half a moment to decide how to proceed. Choosing to go in the order that he was presented with them, he took his paw and waved it, like he was greeting the horse, even though that had already happened. "Hey!" he repeated, a bit slower than normal just for learning purposes.
After that, he reset his posture and said the next one, "Good." He stressed the 'oo' sound, as it seemed that Zenith was having a bit of trouble with that sound. Deciding on using his front paws to morph his face into a smile, he chuckled a bit at how he imagined himself to look like--probably really funny. Since it was a bit hard to define 'good,' he went with the meaning of 'happy' or 'cheerful' as it functioned in the sentence.
But then his mind buffered for a bit while thinking about 'to' since that was a word that was more grammatically significant than actual vocabulary. So, he eventually decided to skip that for now in the lesson, since it wasn't vital for communication. It was more important that the horse learned basic vocabulary so Damage could explain this stuff latter on.
"See," he said, shifting his amber orbs to look at a random rock in the cave. He took his right paw and gestured to his eyes, and then to the object that he was looking at. After that motion was completed, he turned his head back to the learner.
Twitching his whiskers, he poked the horse in the leg with his right paw. "You," he said, making sure to carefully pronounce that word, for it was another one that Zenith had clumsily said.
So he decided to combine all of that into once sentence, and so he took a step back, as though resetting. "Hey!" he said, waving his tail slightly. "Good to see," he said, smiling, as he gestured at the horse. Finishing up with another poke, "You." -
Zenith watched with rapt attention as Collateraldamage explained the words. He understood why the cat skipped 'to,' to an extent; he would have some difficulty describing certain words. "Hey!" he repeated, hoping to use them in the proper context. "Hey, Collateraldamage. Good to see you!" He pronounced 'good' slightly better, but the others were still slightly faltering; he'd get better with time, he decided.

That's good; if he can pick up on some of the grammar on his own, then the less effort I have to put in. Though these thoughts didn't arise from annoyance at teaching Zenith a new language, he had to admit that it was a bit strenuous on his brain to come up with the explanations.
"Good pronunciation," he congratulated, carefully speaking that later word. Hm... will he pick up on the meaning of this one? -
"Pruh-nun-cee-ae-shun." Zenith struggled through the dauntingly long word, then looked expectantly at Leander for the meaning. A big word must have a big meaning, right? The sentence was obviously praise, though, so maybe not.

How do I explain this? he thought to himself, a bit disgruntled that he hadn't picked up by now that he had to use simple words and not expect miracles. Because that killed this whole learning-thing, right?
"Pronunciation," he repeated, moving his right paw loosely in the air a few centimeters away from his muzzle, while the left tapped his left ear lightly. And this makes me look like an idiot. Oh well. -
Zenith stared blankly at Collateraldamage. Paw....ear? He had no idea what the heck that meant. Shrugging in confusion, he nodded with false enthusiasm, pretending he knew it so they could go on to more words.
