You have the option of having had one or more of them die "offscreen," to provide drama and plot. Totally optional though.

NP I do this a lot myself. It can be hard to part with RP characters but in my experience it always gives me a lot of plot fuel because it causes me to focus more now on the development of the characters closest to the one that died. Like if your cats now have kits, if the parents die the kits seem to be developed more afterwards.
