  • Nightmare rarely looked up from his notebook, scribbling quickly. To anyone but him, his handwriting was nearly illegible, but it was lovely to look at, curved and flowing. After about forty five minutes, everyone was dismissed to go get dressed, and he finally came back to his senses, closing the book and pushing the pencil behind his ear.

  • Maddie came in, she glanced up at nightmare and smiled. Instead if gossiping about nightmare the girls gossiped about Maddie. She sighed and went to go get changed, she was one of the first ones out. She walked over to Nightmare. That was the only person she talked to, this whole year, not including teachers and the girls she just stood up to.

  • He smiled, not realizing how funny he probably looked with the pencil sticking out of his hair. He shot the girls a deadly look. They might not have known it, but Nightmare knew what they said about him and about Maddie, and he didn't like it. Turning his attention back to her, the smile returned.
"Well, my gym class was fun. Mostly because I didn't have to do anything."

  • She giggled a cute little laugh, then realized what she did. She stopped, that was the first time she laughed in 2 years. Maddie looked him in the eye, her blue eyes looked on his. She sighed then looked away. Maddie didn't say anything , too shy to talk. She began to walk, waiting for Nightmare to catch up with him.

  • [align=center]He smiled, glad to have made someone else laugh. For the past... Well, ten years, really, everyone had hated and avoided him. Standing, he followed her quickly as the last bell of the day rang. Time to go home. For him, that wasn't saying much. 'Home' was hardly the word for it. It was, to him, a fancy prison. Suddenly, he realized that there was absolutely nothing in his locker. He shrugged, continuing to follow Maddie. He could possibly have a friend. He didn't feel like leaving in a hurry, anyway.

  • She looked at the people passing and talking loudly. She looked at him then went into the band room. She waited for him to step in before she closed the door . She sat down at the piano and began to play a song. Maddie sighed as the song went on, trying to hold in tears. As the memories passed she tried harder to not cry.

    . She plays this song.

  • Nightmare watched her intently as she played, studying her movements and listening to the beautiful music, tears stinging his eye, too. When she finished he was staring at the ground, silvery purple hair covering his face as he let one silent tear slip down. For once, he was lost for words, barely able to murmur, voice cracking slightly, "Wow..."

  • She blushed "T-thanks… it was my mother favourite song…" she said quietly. She couldn't hold the tears in any longer. Tears slid down her cheeks, she wiped then away but more came. She hid her face in her hands, not wanting nightmare to see her like this.

  • [align=center]Cautiously, knowing she was crying, Nightmare asked, "W-would you mind if... I-if I played something?" He really couldn't believe he was doing this. But he felt like he finally had someone to talk to. He didn't have to hide anymore. Wiping his cheek silently, he stared at the ground, mind a flurry of thoughts, most prominently, Why am I doing this? I've never played in front of anyone...

  • Maddie looked up to nightmare, wiping her tears from her eyes "S-sure… I would like to hear…" she said looking at him, her eyes locked on his "Im sorry I shouldn't be crying like this… it happend 1 year ago…" she said quietly. She moved from the piano stool ,letting nightmare sit.

  • [align=center]"Its okay... Bad things happen to all of us." Taking his seat at the piano bench, he carefully placed his fingers on the keys, staring down at them for a moment. Closing his eye and taking a deep breath, he started to play, sadness and anger flowing through his fingers into the music. This was the only song he could play without tripping over notes. His long, pale, slender fingers flowed over the keys with ease and grace. And for the first time in ten years, he felt free.

  • She watched him in amazement. She could feel his emotions through his playing, hurt, pain, anger. All fimiluar feelings to Maddie. She sighed listening to him play.maddie leaned against the wall. She pulled he sleves of her shirt down, trying not to reveal her scars and whip marks.

  • When the song finished, Nightmare was crying, too. He tried to hide the shaking in his shoulders as he took small breaths, tears streaming from one eye. I must look like such and idiot. But... I don't think Maddie cares... Wiping his face angrily, Nightmare stood, leaving the keys and turning back to her. His gaze was down- he didn't want her to see the pain in his eyes. The pain of being unwanted because of something that cost you dearly and wasn't even your fault.

  • Maddie touched his face softly, bringing his chin up. She looked into his eye , and sighed."I feel your pain… I can see you are swimming in it…"She said quietly. "People treat us poorly because we lack something they have…" she pulled up her sleeves to show many cuts from a knife "I cried for help and no one listened… I started cutting myself… now I can't stop" she said ashamed she looked to the floor.

  • When she touched him, Nightmare began to pull back, but stood still at her gentleness. The last time someone had touched him gently... He couldn't remember, and it send tingling across his skin. He closed his eye, letting one last tear slip down his face. "I'm sorry... I cut myself one time... Then they caught me. I'm not allowed to have sharp objects anymore. But... I smoke. If they catch me with that I'll be kicked out from this place, to. I wonder where they'll send me next... Prison, maybe..." He sighed. "This is my third school since the school year started. I've lived across about half of America, because nobody will keep me..."

  • She sighed "this is my first year in school, my father never sent me. I had no money to pay for school fees. I have no friends … well until now, I have so many scars, each one tells a diffrent story, I go home , my dad waits for me and beats me…" maddie sighed.

  • [align=center]"I'm sorry..." He whispered, squeezing her hand. He, at least, didn't get beaten... Usually. Of course, he would get punished sometimes for things completely unreasonable, that he had absolutely no part in. Like the fire that started every few months. Nightmare was just lucky they hadn't found his lighters yet. Then he would probably be taken to court and charged with arson, even though not one fire had been his fault. Slowly, carefully, amazed he was doing something like this, he reached up and untied his eyepatch, letting it drop into his hands.
Where his right eye should be, there was skin, pale and scarred by burns. The skin all around was burned pretty bad, too. He looked completely different. "M-my parents died in a house fire when I was six. They said it was amazing I got out. But... I suffered some pretty serious burns, and lost my eye. I've only told and shown one other person. Well, told... It wouldn't matter if I showed him. I've lived at 7 orphanages this year alone, and I haven't been adopted since I was twelve. Nearly everywhere I've lived has been burned down, and... They always blame me..."

  • She was shocked she looked into his burnt eye." My mom was murderd last year… my dad is an alcoholic he abuses me… I've never told anyone this… I've ran away but he found me and whipped me until I bled, and passed out… Sometimes I just wish I could die, with no pain and no suffering just to die…" she said quietly. Maddie looked to the floor, as tears ran down her cheeks.

  • [align=center]He reached up silently, his slim, gentle fingers wiping the tears off her face, lingering on her cheek for a moment. Slowly, he dropped his hand, tying the patch back over his burns. "I swear, no matter what happens, it is not worth your life. Trust me. I've had three experiences where I thought ending everything would be better for me and everyone else if I wasn't alive anymore. But in a few years I'll get out, and I'll get my own place, even if its almost nothing. It'll be mine. And I'll be out."

  • So looked to him "I can't get a job… I can't move out, my dad has me on lock down. I go home every night, terrified because I know I will get beat. It's hard it really is and when you have no friends and most people don't even know your alive its even harder.I lost the most precious thing to me last year… I saw her, her lifeless body outside our house. Her eyes still full of light… i miss her so much. She was going to help me escape we were going to move, go start new life's but now…" she hit the brick wall hardly with her fist, causing her hand to bled, she slid down the wall until she sat "but now I'm stuck here… forever"
