When he got through to Frostpaw, Vertigo couldn't help but smile the faintest bit, feeling both relieved and amused by his half-brother's surprise. It was fleeting, however. Now was not a time for warm condolances and friendly exchanges.
"I can imagine that would put unnecessary stress on you." The cream tabby replied to his kin's suggestion. The mere thought of having so many different memories crammed in one's head, from so many perspectives, all filled with panic and confusion, made Vertigo bristle. Was that really what Frostpaw thought was best? "Is that how you handle things? ...As long as no one else is suffering, it's okay if I have to?"
That faint sting of anger returned.
"That's not all right, you know. You can't possibly think it was okay for you to shoulder such a heavy burden on your own. The fact that you couldn't trust either Lovelace or I enough to speak with us before you did something so drastic speaks volumes about your faith in us. Seeing the Clan like this... I feel like I have already failed them as a leader." The anger, the calm, all of it was replaced by a surge of bitter melancholy that he tried to withhold from Frostpaw. "More than that... I failed you as a brother, unable to see how much you were suffering. I couldn't protect you."
Frostpaw was so young, faced with such a large responsibility. And that broke Vertigo's heart. He knew that feeling. He knew what it was like to have such a huge responsibility to live up to, and to live in fear of the consequences. Vertigo's own situation was self-perpetuated by his need to live up to others' expectations, but the fear was there regardless. He was afraid that to fail meant to be unworthy of his family's love and respect. That to fail meant he would be alienated and alone. Frostpaw, by contrast, was afraid that to fail meant that everyone that he loved, and who loved him, would be killed; thinking about it that way, Vertigo was not surprised at all by the desperation of his half-brother's actions.
But he wanted Frostpaw to know that things were different for him. Frostpaw had so many cats that were concerned for him, that wanted to help him. Vertigo had not had that luxury... and maybe that was all the more reason for him wanting to be there for his half-brother. "I know your heart was in the right place. But this... look at how much it's hurt you. You, and everyone else who cares about you."
