  • Mesheekna blinked at Lightningpelt. She had stopped when she got to the entrance, and was gazing with wide, frightened eyes at the busied cats making their way around camp. She was shifting her wings which was missing feathers around uncomfortably on her back. She seemed frozen in fear, a deer in headlights.

Toxiclove strode out of the Nursery, and when she spotted Mesheekna, she bared her teeth, fur standing on end and back arched, and snarled, "Blazestar! That bird is still here!" She turned to Lightningpelt and spat, "What is the meaning of this?!" She demanded.

  • Lightningpelt growled, "Calm down, Toxiclove! This is Mesheekna. She can just barely speak cat, and she's going to help our Clan from now on."

  • Toxiclove was almost speechless. She spat, clearly infuriated, partially driven for fear of the safety of her kittens, "Absolutely not!! It tried to eat my kits! Are you completely out of your mind, Lightningpelt?! It's a killer!"

  • Lightningpelt insisted, "Toxiclove, this is a big advantage for our Clan! She'll help us hunt and fight! And I'll make sure she doesn't attack anyone."

  • Toxiclove snarled, "Oh, like she did to my kittens?! Those small, helpless bundles are heir to the leader!" She turned her head and yowled, "Blazestar! Your warrior brought that kit-eater back! Aren't you going to do something?! You were fighting it just a moment ago!" She snarled the last sentence, turning back to Lightningpelt, "And now you're going to welcome it with open paws back into our clan? After it tried to kill my precious kittens? You don't even go that easy on your own species!"

  • Blazestar emerged from his den, standing next to his mate as he gazed at Lightningpelt and Mesheekna.

Lightningpelt pleaded, "Please, Blazestar! I won't let her attack anyone, I promise!" He glanced back at the bird and asked, "Right, Mesheekna?"

  • Mesheekna opened her mouth, and choked out, "Ieee can hunnnt." She nodded to Lightningpelt. She really appreciated him sticking up for her.

Toxiclove scowled, "Oh, yeah, and when leafbare comes along, and we are all starving, what are you going to do then, when you have kits jumping around you? Will you really be able to resist snacking on one? I'm sorry, but I find that really hard to believe. " She stormed back into the Nursery, leaving Blazestar to deal with this problem.

Mesheekna didn't know how to answer, not knowing what leafbare was.

  • Lightningpelt sighed, then turned back to Blazestar. "Please," he mewed. "I know she made a bad first impression, but . . . don't you believe in second chances?"

Blazestar sucked in a quick breath at Lightningpelt's question, then murmured, "She can stay--but she is your responsibility, and if she steps out of line, you will be punished and she will be exiled."

Lightningpelt nodded, then ran back to the forest, motioning for Mesheekna to follow.

Mesheekna flew behind Lightningpelt, her feathers ruffled by the tension. She felt her stomach grumble. She had not eaten in days, perhaps weeks, and she zoned out for a second. In that second, her wing hit the top of a bush, and she tried to recover, but as weak as she was, she tumbled to the ground. She had only been a few feet from the ground to begin with, but it still caused the leaves to fly around her, and dirt to cover parts of her body. She quickly made herself stand, and tried to fly again, this time only daring to hover a foot above ground and forcing herself to pay extra close attention.

  • Lightningpelt frowned when he noticed how weak the bird was. He mewed, "Wait here." The tom dashed back into camp and soon returned with a plump rabbit. He set it in front of Mesheekna.

  • Mesheekna nodded her thanks, and ate the rabbit, tearing off pieces with her talons and eating them whole. She preferred fish, but would get whatever she could find, and in a minute flat, she had devoured it whole. She refrained from grooming her feathers, thinking it impolite, and waited for Lightningpelts orders, seeing whether he would continue running or would scold her, or whatever he might do.

  • Lightningpelt mewed, "Well, if you're going to live here, you're going to have to know about our Clan ways . . . " He then proceeded to tell Mesheeka about the ranks, the warrior code, the names of the seasons, and who to look out for in the Clan--he didn't want her getting into trouble because of a sour warrior.

  • Lightningpelt chuckled. "We memorize them as kits! It's quite easy, honest!" He flicked an ear, then asked, "Would you mind showing me how you hunt?"
