Why is the December gathering going on for so long, it's high point was at least a week ago

A tall queen walked in the shadows with four small kits on her back. She set the kits down on some moss and got some leaves. She set the leaves on the kits and raced off. The kits wailed for their mother. Their eyes weren't open and they were as small as two day old kits because they were. One kit was laying still. She wasn't dead but she was really sick. Her siblings were sick too, but not as sick as her.
