A small black kit warily stepped out of a rotten log and sniffed the air. "It's all clear," she mewed quietly. "let's go."
Another kit, a silver tabby, followed her and together they sprinted to the Shadowclan entrance. The black she-kit ducked behind a large pine tree, then clawed her way up the trunk. The tabby followed suit.
From up the tree they could see the whole Shadowclan camp.
"Look, there's the clan leaders!" the black kit mewed excitedly. "Max, we have to go down there and ask them to join, we promised my mother!"
Max nodded, his eyes thoughtful. "We need to make up names for ourselves, otherwise they would know that we were kittypets."
The black kit smiled. "I'll be Night and you'll be Gray."
Gray just shrugged and leapt down from the tree, landing in the middle of camp. Night followed soon after and they padded into the Leader's Den, ignoring the stares of the Shadowclanners.

A black she-kit lept up and down, grabbing one leaf after another. Eyes widened, she jumped around to see two strange kits wandering around camp. "Hey!" she shouted, padding over to the kits. "Who are you?" she mewed, sniffing at the two strange smelling cats. "Are you...kitty-pets?" she mewed, stepping back a little.
-
Night flattened her ears and hissed. "Of course we're not kittypets! Why would you ask?"
-
"'Cause you smell just like them." she mewed, rasing a furry eyebrow."Relax" Darkkit meowed flatly, glancing at Night. "No need to get moody."
-
Angelkit tilted her head, "What are your names?" she said with a gentle mew, dark blue eyes shimmering as her white pelt was. She flicked her black tipped ear.
-
Night glared at the kits. "I'm Night and this is my friend, Gray," she mewed cautiously.
Gray, who had remained quiet the whole time, stood and sniffed the kits. "Why is it that cats in the Clans smell strange, and then they think we do?" he wondered, then answered his own question, "Because they grew up with that stench, we didn't. It doesn't matter where you come from, but what you are and where you are going."
