Nightstalker's green eyes snapped open. Something was wrong, dreadfully wrong. She stood up on long, wiry legs, her slender, fir-tipped tail sweeping through the air. She looked towards her nest, that had held three perfect, black eggs. Nightstalker blinked in shock, looked again and let out a howling, haunting roar. No longer were there three whole eggs, but now there was shards of egg shell scattered around the nest. The egg's contents soaking the rough wool. Someone had come up in the night and smashed then. The dark dragon roared again, flaming spilling out of her jaws. Nightstalker scented the air. Humans! She turned her head towards the cave entrance, teeth bared. With a running leap she bounded out of the cave, flinging her spiky wings open. Soon she was flapping up at cloud level, roaring in rage and loss. With glowing eyes set with malice she dove towards the village at the bottom of her mountain.

At the last moment she slid her wings open again, just enough to slow her before she hit the ground. Nightstalker landed on one of the wooden houses, it cracked into splinters under her weight. She lowered her head and from her jaws poured liquid fire, into the house that lay under her feet. The raging mother was as big as any of the houses. Arrows clattered uselessly against her rough, iron like scales. Her bronze claws tore at the soft earth. Her strong tail smashing a house behind her. With a snap she shut her jaws, ending the fire. But underneath her the blaze had caught, the wood began to burn. The heat didn't bother the dragon as she roared again, swinging her head. The bronze horns on her nose stabbed straight through a panicking horse and the lifeless body was flung to the outskirts of the town as Nightstalker whipped her head around to bite at a man as he stabbed at her foot with a long spear. He died within seconds, without even making a mark on her touch scales. Nightstalker began to lay waste to another house, killing people with her claws, teeth, tail, wings, fire and the flying wood splinters that came from under her front paws as she tore another wooden house to matchstick sized splinters.

Danan ran through the village, toward the hatred-filled dragoness. She ducked, dove, and rolled as a spew of her white-hot fire raged over her head.
Danan knew what to do. She climbed and dodged men and women who were running away from her. Danan knew what had happened to the dragon, she saw it last night in her dreams. Her dreams always came true. She reached the dragon and used her mindspeak.
"Listen to me, this isn't going to help you. You need to calm down and use your nose to find the ones who actually did do that to you." She ducked under the dragoness's chest.

  • Nightstalker whirled around. Her mind shielded by red hatred, the words barely even reached the reasonable part of her mind. She whipped her tail through the air with a sharp whistling sound, the dragoness roared again. She lowered her head to look at the girl in the eye. Nightstalker lifted her black lips, baring her needle like teeth. A low growling came from her throat. Then the dark dragon lowered a small section of her minds barriers and extended a tendril of her angry mind. "What?" came the velvety, terrifying thought of the dragoness.

  • Danan was almost thrown back with the power of the dragoness's voice.
"I know who did that to you! I saw them leave the village. There were too many and I couldn't stop them!" She called up to the dragon. She had felt the barrier go down very slightly. "I tried, Nightstalker, I tried." Danan added this as whisper. And she had, but they hadn't heard her dream-self screaming at them, they didn't know what horrors would befall their homes.

  • Nightstalker thrashed her head backwards and forwards. She stopped tearing at the village. Her tail stopped lashing. Nightstalker lowered herself to the ground. "Get on." she thought shortly and sealed her mind. Every muscle under her scaly hide was trembling with rage.

  • Danan held on with one hand, gripping her small dagger instinctively. She wasn't going to harm the dragonness, but she would be ready for a surprise attack.

  • Nightstalker beat her wings powerfully and soared over the road. She lowered her mind barriers. "Which way did those eggsmashers go?" she growled.

  • Danan was curious, "Can you smell their scents?"
She closed her eyes and raised her face to the cool night air. She savored the feel of it. She straightened her back sighed deeply. She had never felt so at peace.

  • Danan looked around, blinkinghe hardening rain out of her eyes. The skywater was falling in icicles now, stinging into Danan's skin. She leaned in closer to the dragoness's body.
