She walked through the school gates in a sombre trance-like state. Her mother had offered to go with her to her new high school, but she Tyra had just shaken her head and walked out the door. She had long, messy black hair that swirled in the wind, hiding her pretty face and glittering, sad blue eyes. It was a hot day but she wore a long sleeved, black shirt pulled right over her hands, long black jeans and black flats. Tyra wasn't an emo, just a very sad child that had no reason to be happy or smile or laugh at all. She looked very young for 16 and was kind of short. As she climbed slowly up the stairs to the school a single drop of blood trickled down one of her pale fingers and dripped onto the concrete. Tyra bit her red lip and wiped the blood away, wincing with pain as she did so.

  • Paxton was inside the school talking with friends. He was a sweet down to earth guy and the quarterback of the football team. He never dated though, much to the sadness of the female population. When asked he told them, he just hadn't found the one he wanted to be with. He figured he shouldn't waste the other's time when he felt it in his heart that they weren't good together. He wasn't a stranger to tragedy, in fact his family was probably the most tragedy prone. He was the second eldest child of seven. His father died fighting over seas, and his mother who couldn't live with the thought of being without him committed suicide shortly after. His elder sister, Penelope or Penny, was thirteen at the time, and fell into the wrong crowd. She became addicted to drugs and at the age of sixteen overdosed, passing away.

Paxton was the kind of guy who didn't let it get to him, he lived with his other five siblings and his grandmother. He loved his family dearly and tried to be the role model his younger siblings needed. He was the funny, cute, sweet sort of guy who just happened to be the star quarterback even though his interests were more in art and music. He noticed the new girl walk in and decided to be the first to greet her.

"Hey!" He said giving her a dazzling dimpled smile, his deep blue eyes twinkling with warmth.

  • She raised her head slowly, self-consciously pulling her sleeves lower. Her pale blue eyes were sad and had a hopeless dullness about them. "Hi..." she whispered in a soft, quiet voice that had such a sad ring to it, it nearly always brought tears to peoples eyes. Her skin was pale and her cheeks hollow, with high cheeks bones. She was very pretty, but no one ever looked at her, they averted their eyes like she was a starving, beaten dog huddled in a dark alley.

  • "I'm Paxton! I take it you're the new girl?" He asked smiling as he held out his hand for her to take. He noticed the sorrow that seemed to permeate around her and hover over her like a dark storm cloud, but chose to ignore it, sometimes all anyone needed was for someone to take interest.

  • She nodded. "I'm Tyra," she murmured. She bit her lip, looking distressed. But slowly raised her hand and took his to shake it, as she did so because she had to reach up, her sleeve fell back, showcasing rows and rows of perfectly straight, identical cuts, about 1/4 of a centimetre deep and three centimetres long all along her arm and the back of her hand, the ones closer to her elbow all looked half-healed, but as they got closer to her wrist they looked more open, newer. But the ones on the back of her hand were still bleeding, red blood trailed over her pale skin in little streams. Tyra shook his hand quickly and then let it drop, tugging her sleeve back over her hand.

  • He reached into his backpack and grabbed some bandaids and put them into her hand gently with a smile. And then decided not to mention anything further about the cuts. "As the new girl you need to stop by the office first. I can take you there if you like, Tyra," he said.

  • She watched as he fixed up her arm. She decided not to show him the other arm, which was more mangled, messier, deepier and bloodier with criss-crossed uneven cuts all across and around her arm. She nodded and motioned for him to lead the way.

  • She walked along silently for a few more metres and then said "I'm from England." She lowered her eyes to the ground again and her hair fell across her face again.

  • "That's cool! I've never lived anywhere but this town actually. I would love to travel and see the world like you have. It must have been a bit of a culture shock moving here, huh?" He asked giving her a dimpled smile.

  • She shrugged. "I haven't really left my new house since I moved here," she replied. She was beginning to ease up with him, but she was still shy and sad.

  • "Well that's probably because you didn't have a tour guide. Lucky for you I happen to know a guy who knows this town like the back of his hand. And the crazy thing is you've already met!" He teased with a wink and a playful smile before opening the office door for her.

  • He followed her inside and returned the smile with a wide dimpled smile that made the corners of his eyes crinkle and his eyes themselves to twinkle. "Hey, Mrs. Green! I have the new student, Tyra, here to get her schedule." He told the old wrinkled woman at the counter who smiled warmly at him before retrieving her schedule.

"Here is your schedule dear. Just sign this paper and Mr. White here can lead you to your next class and help you to your other classes the rest of the day. Is that okay with you?" The old woman asked.

  • Tyra nodded slowly, the small smile gone, she quickly signed the paper, keeping her hands and arms hidden under her sleeves. She took the schedule, mumbled "thanks," and turned to leave. Her messy hair covering her face and her narrow shoulders slumped.
