Hey I'm new to Gimp 2.6. I've tried to make a few simple signatures...but it's not really working. Anybody wanna lend a hand?

Gladly! (: I've had GIMP 2.6 for a few months, and it's actually not that hard once you get the hang of it. First off: if you haven't already, read the Gimp.org Help Manual that comes with the download. I didn't bother to read it when I got it, and was pretty much lost. Then I had a headdesk moment -- "Oh, yeah, that help thing!" -- and I felt so stupid.
I'm really bad at explaining, so I'll supply some links. Gimp.org Tutorials, GIMP Tutorial picks, Blending.
Tutorials are the answer! And just mess around until you find something that works for you. Don't feel like you have to be great right away; and explore the WHOLE interface, all of the effects they provide and the layers and the gradients and brushes. But if you want to know how to make a simple signature, just open up a good stock photo, duplicate the layer and put the second layer on Overlay. Then flatten the image. Duplicate again. Slap on a texture ( I suggest from dA ) and put it on whatever layer mode you like -- overlay, burn, harden, multiply, whatever. Add some text. Done!

-blinks- If I understood more than a couple words of what you just said I'd be set. See I tried doing a couple layers once but I couldn't get them to merge....I ended up hitting random buttons and failing miserably.

It's fine. You don't need to merge them; just save them as PNG when you're done.
-
what does that do? And I'm still lost...D;
-
Er, I'm sorry. So, when you save something that you've made, go to: file > save as > and just put .png at the end of what you're naming it. ex: cat.png or tomato.png.
I'm sorry I can't offer more help; just get familiar with the program, read the Help documents that come with it, and take a look at this to get you started. -

Ok I read through the help thing and I still kinda don't get it but I managed to make this!! YAY! THANK YOU!!
