    The creature had passed them, but the same growling and snarling still haunted Alice. She sighed and closed her eyes.

    Aegis stayed tense for a moment, waiting with his ears straining to hear any sort of noise, before finally allowing his muscles to relax. He stepped away from Alice, his long fur settling back into place. "What was that beast?" he muttered, not particularly looking for an answer.

    Aegis glanced towards his sister with worried green eyes. "Alice?" he meowed gently. "You okay? It's gone."I think.

    He couldn't tell what part Alice was responding to -- the part about her being okay or the part about the thing being gone. Nevertheless, Aegis stared out at the land, straining his green eyes to try to see the menace that his sister sensed.
