The genealogy of the wolf is not completely clear, but it appears that ancestors of the carnivorous wolf started in the Paleocene, 60 million year ago. The family lines of carnivorous dogs and cats that are recognizable to us today began 20 million years ago during Miocene. A million year ago the closest ancestor of our modern wolf emerged with a larger skull and brain. It had a long snout and was well adapted to running and chasing prey. Our modern wolf, the grey wolf, is smaller and has a higher forehead than the original wolves. Wolves today also have a more complex social structure and live in cooperating family units.

Life Expectancy
A wolf’s life is difficult at the best. The dynamics of the pack puts pressure on its leaders, which usually are the strongest and oldest members. They are continually watched for hints of weakness and vulnerability. If a flaw in not evident, young wolves test the leaders to assess their overall physically ability.
