Alice shrugged. " Little things caused by my unequal sense of balance. Almost getting hit by a semi truck after stumbling off the sidewalk, tripping over a tree root and cracking my head open. Little things. " She said, then tried to change the subject. " So... Do you have anyone... Special? Someone you like? " she asked nonchalantly as they walked, not keeping eye contact.

" Oh. " she whispered. He needs time to recover. I can wait... a part of her thought. No, shut up... her more reasonable side thought. She walked silently next to him towards their school, daydreaming. He wasn't talking, and she began to get lost in her thoughts and stopped watching where she was going. Alice's boot caught on a tree root sticking up and she fell forward.

Alice couldn't form words. His beautiful face was only a foot away from hers. Her cheeks were bright red from the embarassing fall, but she could only think about the fact that his arms were around her. " Ummm... " his breath swirled in her face and she couldn't breathe. " I... I think so.... " she gasped out.

Alice didn't say anything, her head just nodded a little bit, her cheeks continued to flush deep red and her heart was beating faster than ever. She started walking towards their school, watching the ground this time.

Alice breezed through her classes until lunch. She didn't say anything unless she was asked a question and she couldn't stop thinking of Austin. When lunch came she stopped by her locker to put her bag away.

Alice smiled, finally over her shock. "Hi. " she replied closing her locker and leaning against the wall, waiting for him.

Alice grabbed her tray and set it on the table, then she thought otherwise. " Do you mind? " she asked shyly.

Alice smiled and sat across from him, poking at her salad, wondering if he liked her. I doubt it. Most guys would've made some sort of move by now... How embarassing it would be if he knew what I was thinking... she thought.

Alice sighed then got up when she was finished with her salad. I guess he just wants to be friends... she thought unhappily. Which doesn't bother you. It's not like you had any chance with him anyway... " I guess I'll see you tomorrow.... I have to leave school early today, because my dad's going on a fishing trip all weekend and I have to keep the house in order... " she said, then walked over to the trash bins to dump her tray.

Alice stopped by her locker to grab her bag, then she headed towards the entrance of the high school. As she opened the doors and stepped outside, she got a weird feeling. Like somebody was watching her. She shivered, pulling her jacket more tightly around her, then continued towards the trail. She began her walk home, but the feeling never left. Once or twice she thought she'd seen something flash out of the corner of her eye, but she just put it off to nerves. It was until she heard a hissing sound -- like someone breathing deeply through their nose then sighing out their mouth -- that she started running. Before she could make it very far, a figure appeared in front of her and she gasped, stumbling backwards and falling on her bottom. The figure stepped forward into her vision and she almost screamed. It was a man, startlingly beautiful - though she still preferred Austin - except for his eyes. They were a deep frightening shade of burgundy-red. She screamed, but unless anyone in the school had super-hearing - which she seriously doubted - nobody would hear her. The man advanced, staring at her hungrily and she cowered back . ' Such a pity, ' the man purred. ' A beautiful face, almost too hard to resist. But your blood does smell rather greatly appealing. Almost floral. ' she gasped for air and screamed again, all the blood drained from her face and her heart beating like crazy.
