Coal's gaze was steady and, as always, emotionless. "I'd say we're about average pack size." he replied, thinking back to his old pack. Yes, they were about the same in number, but each pack was different. His mother had been alright with him leaving the pack, saying that he always seemed to be in a daze and it would be good to have some time alone. His father hadn't cared at all, what with having other sons and daughters to look after, but Coal didn't really mind. He had wanted time alone, and he had had it for a while. But dangers started to appear, and Coal wasn't foolish enough to believe he could handle the humans on his own.

Since the pack isn't too big, they won't draw attention yet there will be enough members to hold their own. Kai reasoned, mulling over the thought. "Ah, are you headed toward your pack right now?" He cautiously inquired. "I'm sure your pack could use a few more members right?" His demeanor had changed quite a bit now that he learned that there was a pack that could offer him protection nearby.

Coal had watched Kai's transformation from hostile to curious behind his emerald green eyes. "Yes I'm headed to my pack right now. We don't need new members, but that doesn't mean you cant join." Coal replied in a very straightforward manner. He sat down, patiently waiting for Kai to make up his mind if he should join him.

"I'll....consider it after meeting your pack." Kai reluctantly said, not wanting to make it seem like he was too eager. He couldn't trust the pack, not yet anyway. The wolf-dog's amber eyes bore into the other wolf's, gauging his trustworthiness. The dark wolf could be leading him into a trap, however, he hadn't made a move to attack him so far so he was able to be trusted for the moment...probably.

Coal's eyes remained emotionless, not revealing any of Coal's feelings. He held Kai's gaze a moment longer before turning wordlessly back to the direction of his pack. Closing his eyes for a second, he mentally traced the route in which he was to go. After doing so Coal opened his eyes and padded off, not looking back to see if Kai would follow or not. How interesting, Coal thought to himself.

Kai trotted after Coal, his tail waving slightly in the air as a breeze wound its way through the forest. Birds chirped up ahead and the sun was still shining bright. Oh, how the mood had changed in a matter of several minutes. He also kind of hoped that if he were to joint he pack that they didn't mind sharing food with him. Although he was embarrassed to admit it, one did get used to the amounts of food the humans fed you.

Coal leaped over a fallen tree trunk that was in the way. The trunk was covered in spongy green moss, a shade darker than Coal's eyes. The leap was easy, for although Coal was lanky he was not without strength. The meat on his bones was mostly muscle, and his ribs were slightly visible. In general he was a healthy wolf, but when Coal cast a glance back at Kai, he realized he seemed skinny compared to Kai. That will change once he joins the pack, Coal decided.

Kai easily cleared the tree, landing on the forest ground with a soft thud only to find the dark wolf staring at him. He decided to ignore the fact and ask a question to break the silence. "Ah, I kind of forgot something," the slightly older, yet less mature wolf began. "What is your name? I'm Kai."

Coal continued to walk through the forest as he spoke. "My name is Coal." he replied. The silence that had preceded them had not bothered him, but he knew that some wolves enjoyed to chat. Coal had never been one to talk unless necessary. He had companions, but not friends, but he preferred it that way. Therefore, gossip had never entertained him.

Coal sighed as he realized that this wolf enjoyed having conversations. "Prey is plentiful." he replied, not catching the hint that Kai was hungry. "You like to talk, don't you?" he remarked, not trying to sound rude but being honest all the same. The trail narrowed at this point in the forest, and Coal made sure not to step on any pinecones that littered the floor in that area.

"Birds, rabbits, mice, the occasional deer. There's also fish, but the bears eat those." Coal told him, hearing the sound of possible prey even as he spoke. He thought of the river that ran through the forest and estimated that it was nearby. Yes, if he focused his ears and listened intently he could hear the faint sound of the river.

Kai's keen eyes caught the slight movement of Coal's ears and he himself pricked his own. The faint sound of water rushing over the ground alerted him to the presence of a river. "Should we err...stop by then? I'm sure we could catch a few fish somehow!"

Coal turned to face the light-furred wolf, regretting his earlier comment about the fish. "I'm assuming you're hungry?" he asked, although he was pretty sure he knew the answer. Coal did have some experience when it came to fishing, having had to use the skill when prey was particularly hard to find in his loner days, but that did not mean he enjoyed it. It seemed as though he had inherited a feline trait, for he did not enjoy getting his paws wet, let alone his whole body.

"Was it that obvious?" Kai asked, feeling his pelt heat up slightly in embarrassment. "I can catch my own food, though." He followed the younger and darker-colored wolf. Being a wolf, he didn't really mind getting wet due to his thick outer coat that repelled anything from water to dirt.

Rustling through the bushes as her dark tipped ears perked for the sound of the river. Slinking her way through the undergrowth finally found the cool liquid. Lapping it up due to thirst and her sprint Clover could smell fish father out. Licking her maw as she lifted her head up made her way into the water. Being ice cold made her shiver a little bit as the depth came to her knees. Peering down into the water with her own bright blue eyes circled for fish. So intent she hadn't heard the other two wolves talking not to far off.

Coal shrugged, his bony shoulders visible. "Its fine. We'll go fishi-" Coal stopped abruptly and a growl arose from his throat. It was merely instinct for pack wolves to growl when they sensed someone on their territory. Coal's head swiveled as he scanned the riverbank with his green eyes. "There." He pinpointed the location of the intruder.

Watching the water intently Clover found herself watching a fish swim in circles. Being completely still and waiting for it to swim right under her maw. Slowly lowering herself down with the utmost practice partly opened her maw ready to snap at it. Laying her ears flat as tuned everything out except the fish, not hearing the nearby growl.

Kai's body stiffened and his amber gaze was intense as it bore into the she-wolf. He had forgotten that this wasn't his territory but he was already feeling an instinctive urge to protect it. He snarled softly, his fur bristling and the large male charged out of the undergrowth, aiming to bowl the wolf over and into the water.
