Leafheart stalked over to the apprentice den where Butterpaw was waiting. She poked her head in and called her. "Butterpaw! We're on a border patrol today!"
She waited and saw Butterpaw scamper out of the den. -
"Okay!" he said. He streched alittle.
-
Leaf heart nodded. "Our patrol has Treetail, Starpaw and Eaglefang. Let's go. We may do some hunting on the way back of there's time."
She turned and bounded to where the patrol was waiting. -
Butterpaw followed, keeping a steady pace.
-
Eaglefang waited till everybody was at the entrance and with a nod from the leader, set off. Leafheart was so glad to have Butterpaw as her apprentice. He was well behaved, sometimes a little clumsy and able to focus easily. She would have no trouble teaching him how to fight when the time came.
-
Butterpaw triipped over some leaves.
-
Leafheart chuckled at the sight of Butterpaw stumbling over some leaves. "A bit clumsy today, eh Butterpaw?" she teased.
-
"Maybe" he giggled.
-
She nudged him with a paw. "Well pull yourself together," she ordered jokingly, "because we're going hunting now."
She nodded to Eaglefang, and he nodded back. "Let's go," she turned tail and left the site. -
Butterpaw followed and saw a dog. "Run!" he screamed.
-
Leafheart berated herself silently as she ran alongside Butterpaw. Why did I go this way? she chided herself. Suddenly realizing Butterpaw was tripping over a lot, she leant down to grab his scruff. "Let me hold you!" she pleaded to him.
-
"Then grab me!"
-
Leafheart sank her teeth into his scruff and darted up a tree, away from the dog. She put Butterpaw down next to her, making sure he had a firm hold of the branch. "Remember the training I gave you for jumping across trees?" she asked, finding a route in the direction of the camp, "we're gonna use that now."
-
"Ok!" he said, as he began to jump across the trees.
-
Leafheart bounded beside him. "Be careful where you put your paws," she warned. Looking over her shoulder, she realized that the dog had been called back. But she decided to stay in the tree just to be safe.
