Arthur, your back. You came back for me.

Without thinking, the blonde haired American almost ran towards the jade-eyed nation, moving both arms out infront of him to catch England in a warm embrace. Tears formed at the corners of Alfred's sapphire blue eyes, but he quickly blinked them away. He didn't want to act weak and broken infront of the stern nation. He wanted to show that he was strong. But, Alfred couldn't do that. The blonde America gladly let the tears flow from his blue eyes, sobbing into Britain's back. "A-Arthur. I-I... I missed you!" cried Alfred, squeezing his eyes tightly shut in an attempt to stop the river of tears.

  • Arthur froze as the taller nations arms wrapped around him, pale jade eyes wide, dropping the armload of books he'd been re-shelving as Alfred almost tackled him in a hug from behind. He pulled in his lower lip, digging his teeth into the pallid flesh as he tried to make a split decision, standing still as the blonde nation sobbed into his woollen sweater. "F-Freddy..." He said softly, British accent hushed, swallowing before straightening his shoulders slightly. "I didn't come back to forgive you, you know. I'm only here because the others asked me to." He knew it would hurt, he knew it was lies, but he simply couldn't let himself get attached to Alfred again, as much as it hurt right now, he knew it would be saving the future heartbreak.

Alfred snapped his sapphire blue eyes open at the Englishman's comment, that he wasn't here to forgive him, and that he only came because the others told him to. It hurt. It hurt so much. Alfred, trying hard not to cry out with anger at the shorter blonde, took a deep, shakey breath and let go of Arthur. Stepping back a few paces, the American raised his head, sapphire blue eyes met pale jade green eyes. "Arth-- England. You came here to help me clean up?... Thank you then." The blonde nation really wanted to be angry at England, but he couldn't. It was his fault that they couldn't be friends anymore. It was all Alfred's fault.

  • ((I don't know... Maybe try re finding the picture, but at a different web address? That might work...))

"Don't thank me, it wasn't my idea, or preference." England said, looking over his shoulder at Alfred, swallowing a heavy breath and exhaling softly to compose himself. He hated lying, he hated hurting the nation he'd raised and adored, but he had to, for both their sakes... Stooping over, he recollected the books he'd dropped in Alfreds sudden show of affection, placing them back in neat order, back to the American, trying to forget the utter pain in his ocean-toned eyes, the clear colour of tears as they raced down his slightly tanned cheeks.
It was for their own good, it had to be this way.

"Arthur. You didn't really come all this way because the others told you to. You couldn't have. Y-You... You hate me!" a tone of anger flared in the blonde American's accent, aimed directly at the jade eyed England. "You hate me! Why would you even bother to come and help me?!" Alfred finnished yelling, but had both hands balled into fists, and panted shallowly. "W-Why?" repeated Alfred, lowering his head to look down at the wooden floor.

  • Arthur finished what he was doing, turning to face the American with a tart hand on one hip. "Alfred, how old are you? Four?" He inquired with mild scorn, considering his downturned figure with his cool forest green stare. "What is all this nonsense? Is there any reason in particular you're acting like a Damn child about this?" This wasn't what he wanted to say, at all. He wanted to tell Alfred he could never really hate him, that he never had, he wanted so badly to give in and let this all out, but... He couldn't. That day in the rain had left him colder, afriad to ever connect again, the pain was just too much once they left him, and they always did. "I would have thought I'd raised you better, but obviously, I was wrong."

Arthur's harsh words hit the blonde Alfred harder and more painful than any battle wound or bullet shot. He thought for a long moment, hands balling into fists and then relaxing over and over again. This wasn't right. I want things to be how they used to be. Drawing in another shakey breath, the blonde American stood up straight, whiping the wet tears dampening his lightly tanned face. Putting on a brave face, Alfred met jade green eyes with sapphire blue ones. "I'm sorry. This is no way to treat a guest. I'm going to get you a drink, what do you want?" he asked the stern Englishman politely, trying so hard not to raise his voice in an angry yell, or begin to sob again. He couldn't hurt him anymore, Arthur didn't need to see him like this. It wasn't fair. For once the loud-mouthed America was quiet and trying to be polite and calm to his former friend. Alfred wished so much that he could still call him a friend.

  • Arthur considered him for a long moment, watching with unreadable features as the America dried the tears from his face and asked in what England had come to recognise as his 'quiet voice', which, in all reality, was only a small percentage more hushed than his regular tone of over the top shouting. That's quite alright, though I'm glad to see some sense in your head, for once. Since I'm not a guest by invitation, I won't put you to any stress. Just... Sort yourself out.I've got work to do. Lots of it." The light blonde said, a small sigh in his accent as he turned away and returned to his cleaning and fussing and quiet scolding.

"Ok. If you need me i'll be upstairs."

With that, the blonde American took one last blank look at the jade-eyed England, turned swiftly on dark brown heels and walked towards the stairs. It hurt so much to have Arthur, the one person Alfred would do anything to keep by his side, so close to him but still so cold and distant towards him. The blonde supressed a sigh before making sure that he was out of range for the Brit to hear him.

"Why did I leave?" questioned Alfred, sapphire eyes narrowed in thought. He was sat down on his 'american flag' pattern bed. He could hear the jade-eyed Britain tidying up his messy living room downstairs, but wished that he was up here with him. "What can I do? What will make him see that i'll... i'll brake without him!?" the American cried out loudly, slamming one tight fist down onto the bed sheets.

  • After god knows how many hours of cleaning, the bottom floor of the Americans house was deemed 'livable' by the Brit. Arms ladden with a stack of boxes, old toys and comics he hadn't had the heart to throw away, Arthur headed down the hall towards the storage room, swinging open the door with his foot and backing into the dusty expanse of room. He looked around curiously at his former subordinates momentos and general clutter of history. Smiling at some, looking away from others that were too painful. He dropped the boxes, causing dust to rise and make the stern nation cough indignantly, gaze drawn sideways as he turned to leave. Drawn to the one thing he'd really hoped to never see again. The uniform Alfred had worn on that day. He froze, considering the dressed maniquen for a long, long time before softly stepping towards it. His hand found place in the collar, the same place it'd knotted on that day as he feverishly begged the American not to leave him. Swallowing heavily, the blonde leant his head forward, touching his forehead to the chest of it, lost in memory, jade eyes misty and breathing shallow at the dull ache that had never really left.

Swallowing dryly, the blonde Alfred blinked, hoping to wash away the thought that Arthur would never truely be his friend again. Standing slowly, the American stood up from his blue, white, and red bed sheets and began to walk towards the bedroom door. Just as he was about to step out of his messy room, something hard collided with the blonde's foot. Curiousness flashed in his sapphire-blue eyes for a moment as he glanced down towards what he had kicked. It was an old cardboard box with a label on the top of it. Unfortionatly, through the many years of just sitting there, the writing had been smudged away. Alfred leaned down, gripping the box's sides with both hands and lifting it up. Woah...! Its heavy! thought the American nation, walking back towards his bed and opening the box. His breathing stopped for a moment, sapphire-blue eyes widened at what was in the box. Through the posters, magazines, CD cases and other stuff, lay an old peice of torn white paper.

    My... letter to England.

  • It still smelt, uncannily, of rain. England wondered if he'd just imagined it, whether a scent could actually linger for all those years. Perhaps, like the aching memory, it never truly left. Arthur stood like that for a while, hand fitted into the collar, imagining Alfreds racing pulse behind his hand, like it had been on that day. He'd sworn, when he came, he wouldn't let himself get hurt again, but the pain was nearly intolerable already, just being in the usually bright Americans presence, having to constantly push him away, for both their sakes, yes, but that didn't make him feel any better for it. With a small, barely audible sigh, he turned, leaving the storage room and grabbing his bag. By this time, it was rather late, he'd arrived in the afternoon, and who knows how many hours he'd wasted cleaning the downstairs of Alfreds abode? Bare feet quiet on the upstairs carpet, England walked along, looking for either the guest room, or Alfred...

    "Arthur..."

Throwing the box down onto his bed, Alfred couldn't stop the flashing images of that rainy day so many years ago. Somehow, the blonde man swore he could still smell the sent of rain, and almost hear the sound of guns firing. Shaking his head furiously, the American took in a deep breath. "I should go and check up on him." commented Alfred, closing the carboard box and turning, continuing towards the door. Taking his boots off before-hand, he walked silently along the carpeted corridor outside his American styled bedroom, keeping his sapphire blue eyes out for a certain blonde nation who he hadn't seen for about a few hours. "Arthur, where are you? I need to talk to you for a minute.." called Alfred, turning the corner that lead to the landing and near the stairs.

Arthur paused at Alfreds voice, as loud as ever, and sighed under his breath, dropping his tartan suitcase by a door and turning. It wasn't hard to find America, honestly, while he may think he was being quiet, England could easily hear his uneven footsteps, a rhythm throughout the otherwise sullen house. The blonde nation walked down the hall, stopping by the top of the stairs and looking at the approaching ocean-eyed nation, raising one admittedly large dark eyebrow. "I'm here, what do you want, Fred?" He inquired, hardly able to stop himself from calling America 'Freddy', his affectionate pet-name from when he was a child.

A smile tugged at the corners of the sapphire-eyed nation's pale pink lips as England called him by his pet-name, Freddy. Alfred wished that he was back as a child, playing soldiers with the young Arthur. Laughing and smiling, happy...

"Arthur, its quite late. So, why don't you stay the night here at my place?" inquired the blonde American, fingers tugging awkwardly at the hem of his light blue T-shirt. Silently hoping that the answer from Arthur was a 'yes', doubt pushed that answer away from his mind. Surely, after all the years Alfred had known the jade-eyed England, he had come to know his personality extremely well. The blonde American cringed slightly as he imagined the British mans harsh responce. Are you still a weak child? Hoping deeply that your 'friend' will come and stay? What are you saying? Arthur won't stay. He doesn't open up to any of the other nations. So, why do you think he'll open up to you?

The Brit considered America with still gently narrowed eyes. He'd never seen Alfred look so... Shy. About anything, before. His voice was actually below a patriotic shout. It was impressive, and at the same time, mildly disconcerning. He was actually glad Alfred had asked, since he'd missed his flight home in his flurry of cleaning, and he wasn't particularly fond of the notion of asking America for a favour himself. At least this way, he could pretend it was a huge imposition on himself. "Fine, if you insist. This house is hardly clean anyway, and I'm still not pleased with your behaviour. I'm not the only one that's noticed you're 'off' lately, all the other nations are complaining about it too. Honestly, Alfred-" He continued off in a fast paced, typical rant of his, eyes closed and head turned away from the bright American.

Alfred's tall frame stiffened slightly as England noted on how everyone else has noticed he had been 'off' lately. They all noticed? Swallowing slowly, the American blinked once with sapphire-blue eyes, trying to guess what Arthur was thinking. Why is he so good at hiding his feelings? Taking a step forward, Alfred desided to do a little acting. If he behaved like he would normally do, being loud and annoying, then maybe the blonde Brit wouldn't be so suspicious towards him. Glancing once at Arthur's turned-away face, America took a deep breath and pulled the biggest and friendliest smile he could do. "Awesome! Well then, Arty, i'll go and get some snacks for tonight!" Rushing forward, Alfred narrowly missed banging into the jade-eyed nation. Almost hopping down the stairs, Alfred kept up his little acting until he was safely in the kitchen. Leaning with one hand on the stone-white worktop, the American nation breathed out a sigh. "Maybe I over-did it just a little..."

Arthur opened his eyes at the excessively loud, over exicted voice of America, watching him literally skip down the stairs with narrowed eyes. A few words came to mind. Odd, overdone, brash. Bi-polar seemed a good word for it, also.
Giving a small sigh, the blonde followed Alfred downstairs, sitting in the loungeroom, near sinking into the huge plush leather lounge, much smaller and lighter than the taller honey-blonde nation.
If anything, Alfreds behaviour unsettled him more and more, he knew something was wrong. Having raised the boy from a young nation, it was impossible for Arthur to not care, and it was almost killing him to see how much pain his presence seemed to cause Alfred...
    But no.
The Englishman rested his head in his hand.
He couldn't let himself get hurt again, he'd promised himself. It had to be this way...
    Didn't it?

Alfred hoped he wasn't making too much noise in his kitchen, opening cupboard doors at random and rumaging through draws for something, anything, that would be fit to eat with his British guest. Smiling triumphantly, the blonde American took out a large bag of chips. "Now, I wonder if I have some fish. The least I can do is cook Arthur his favourite meal." commented the tall blonde, turning and walking over to a pearl-white fridge. "Ah!" exclaimed Aflred, his smile becoming wider as his sapphire-blue eyes caught sight of what he had been looking for. Fish. Taking both bags towards the cooker, the tall nation began to place both fish and chips into the oven. "Arthur! I'm cooking you some dinner so watch TV or something while i'm getting it ready!" shouted the bright America. I hope this is working.

Arthur visably cringed at Americas words. Oh god... What was he brewing up in there? The jade-eyed nation sat nervously on Alfreds couch for a moment, before relenting and switching on the TV, turning it to the least brain-killing channel the American presented, and sitting back, waiting for either the smoke alarm to go off, or Alfred to hand him a plate of seared mush and greasy burgers. He wasn't sure which he prefered, rather...
With another sigh, he pushed back his light hair, trying to think of anything but the nation in the other room.
    That, of course, was impossible.
