Cocoa

Cocoa crouched in the shadows of her barn as she listened for one of the many mice
that occupied her home. The scratching of tiny claws could be heard from all around,
but the most prominent was under a bit of hay just a fox-length or so ahead of the
tortoiseshell she-cat. It paused briefly as she started making her way forward so she
paused, too. As soon as it started scrounging again, she continued stepping forward
until she could slam her paws down on top of it.

A small squeak was the only thing that could be heard just before Cocoa killed it. It
scared off all of the other mice, but that was fine. They would come back out here before
too long. Picking up the mouse, she padded over to the biggest stack of hay and bounded
up to the top to lay down and eat.

She was lonely, that much was apparent. She was an affectionate cat, and she enjoyed
spending her time around others. But she had been alone for about three moons now,
and she greatly wanted another cat to share her barn with. Not that she would ever
come right out and say that, but still. That was her true wish, and she hoped everyday
that it would come true.

~~~
Kio was a young tabby-and-white tom. His fur wasn't white, really, but a cream, or an eggshell, or an off-white. Who cared. It was fur, wasn't it? And it protected him, no matter the color. His green eyes were the color of fresh spring grass, and seemed to look to your very soul. His brown tabby stripes kept him warm in the winter, but deathly hot in the summer, no thanks to his lighter spots.
He was looking for love, yes? But it had to be a she-cat he liked - and so far, he hadn't found one... And he had had not a single whisker of luck so far. Where is a tom-cat supposed to look to find something as simple as love? They say it's easy! No problem!
But it wasn't. His whiskers twitched as he sat on the fence at the barn. He had used to be a kittypet - thanks to his distinct markings, most could tell. But who cared. He wasn't anymore, why couldn't they get over it and stop judging him? Like that cat that he had heard about in stories - was it Firestar? What a weird name for a cat.
But no-matter, he was a loner now. Strong, brave, and independent. No one could harm him. But he could harm all. If he had to, mind you. So, what was it that pricked at the edges of his mind? Was another cat near? Another she-cat to try on, toy with her heart?
Another she-cat to tease and then break? Awesome. Or was this the one? He prayed fervently to.. Well, he didn't really know who, so to his parents, perhaps - He prayed fervently to them. Let this be the one. His prayer echoed in his mind. Let it be a she-cat, at the very least. Now, he just had to figure out where it was in all the space at this barn. Where would he look first?
His tail-tip twitched in annoyance... He had to search for the one? He had to find out if it was just another territorial tom, or another pretty she-cat? Whatever. He hopped down from his perch and began to follow the path his senses had laid out for him.
He rounded a corner, and there was the barn. It was definitely coming from here.
He poked his nose in.
Amongst all of the hay, Cocoa could hardly pick out one scent from another. Couple that with
the fact that she was eating a mouse, the only thing she could smell at the moment was mice
and hay. A fox could have snuck up on her while she was eating--and she had to eat slowly,
what with her crooked jaw--and she wouldn't have known it until the wretched creature was
on top of her.
Despite her sense of smell not working, however, her eyesight was just fine, and she saw the
muzzle of a cat poke in through the entrance to her barn from her high perch. Her eyes widened
at first then narrowed; her ears flattened back, and her fur stood on end. Sure, she was lonely,
but she was a skittish cat. And if this cat seemed to pose a threat, she wasn't about to hesitate
before running off.
Kio shoved the rest of his head in, looking around. Hm? Well, it was a she-cat, for sure. But what was he to say? 'Be my mate because I want one?' Definitely not. He padded in further. Wait - something wasn't right. Where was the she-cat?
He glanced around. "Hello-o-o?" He stepped in, twitching his ears. "Hello-o-o?" He scented the air. But between the tantalizing scent of mice and hay, he couldn't pinpoint the she-cat. How would he find her?
Hi eyes flickered between the perches of the barn, but she was well hidden. Was his mind playing tricks?
She watched the tom quietly, flattening her ears and shifting just a bit. Because of that,
though, the bit of hay she was sitting on top of fell away from underneath her and sent
her sliding down the side of the haystack. She tried to get a clawhold, but it all just fell
away beneath her weight. When she and the hay finally settled, she was underneath
the new mini-stack.
He froze, watching the hay rain down, then watched a cat fall and get buried underneath. He suppressed a snicker. Wait - a cat? The she-cat! He ran over and began to paw the hay off of her. "Found you."
Panic was starting to take over the tortoiseshell she-cat, and she burst from the hay as
soon as a lot of the weight was off of her. She raced across the barn in a semi-circle and
settled in a corner that had just a little bit of hay in it to clean the hay and dust from her
fur.
He rolled his eyes. "Scaredy-mouse." He taunted, stalking over to her. "Oh, come on. I haven't done anything to scare you." Yet, he added in his mind.
She watched the tom approach her with wide, fearful eyes, shrinking back in the corner
to get away from him. She was once a kittypet, and one who lived a particularly soft life
until she absolutely had to leave. If this tom was going to attack her... Well, she would
try to fight, but she couldn't absolutely guarantee anything.
He rolled his eyes again. "Oh, come on! I'm not going to hurt you! Get up and stop looking at me like I'm a badger." This wasn't going as well as he'd originally hoped. What now?
Okay, new plan time. "If you're not going to get up, I'll have to take drastic measures." The threat was barely concealed, but if he didn't act well enough, then she'd see through the ruse. He'd never hurt another cat. He just wanted this one to get up.
kio groaned inwardly and turned around. He chased the flickering tailtip, but once he was among the sea of corn, he lost sight of the skittish young she-cat.
Kio had just been about to walk into his own home, when he caught the she-cat's scent again. He turned around, eyes searching the corn, and crouched. He stalked forward until he saw her. "I wasn't gonna do it, ya know." He meowed from behind her.
"Oh, stop looking at me like I'm a badger!" He protested, leaning down and nipping the stalks of grass so she was free. "I'm not evil, I'm not a Clan cat. I'm not a rogue that hurts for fun!" He lashed his tail in annoyance. "I'm a loner, nothing more." His eyes flashed in defiance, as if he dared her to say he was wrong.
