The lithe chocolate apprentice known as Briopaw scampered into the medicine den, her day's catch – a thrush and two mice – in her jaws and a merry twinkle visible in her eyes. Dropping the prey at her dark paws, she called out, "Brought you guys something!"
As she waited for one of the medicine cats or medicine cat apprentices to show themselves, she curiously appraised the den. Briopaw could almost taste the strong scent of herbs that permeated the den, diluted slightly by the fresh air entering the den behind her. Nests, of course: whether they were for patients of the medicine cats or the medicine cats themselves, the young apprentice wasn't certain. And that faint, underlying scent – one that could almost be overlooked, or even simply imagined – of sickness and infection and blood.
