• The grinning, goofy dog racing over the rolling hills wasn’t running for any particular reason, other than the fact that he simply enjoyed it. Attempting to turn around while running full tilt, Riley’s paws tangled beneath him and the young dog’s face briefly met the ground. A moment later, the yellow mutt was on his feet again, happily pouncing on a beetle in the grass.

He paused, standing alertly as he caught the scent of felines. His attention now locked on this new discovery, the eighty pound dog trotted forward, pausing every so often when he was sidetracked by a new odor. As he snuffled at the entrance of a rabbit hole, the scent of cat suddenly grew stronger and Riley pulled his dusty snout from the hole, sneezing loudly and violently before grinning merrily at the approaching cat. Maybe these guys would be nice and give him a place to stay?

At first Backfire couldn't believe his eyes. But once he had established that there was in fact a dog on WindClan territory, a shiver ran down the warrior's spine and he let out a warning hiss as he made his way slowly towards it. The tom's fur bristled and a low snarl sounded in the back of his throat. Backfire didn't say anything, but he hoped that the dog wouldn't attack. On his own, Backfire would be no match for the canine.

  • Riley’s head tilted to the side as he eyed the cat for a moment. He blinked once, slowly processing the hiss that had come from the feline. Whatever could that mean? Maybe the cat wanted to play? No, it didn’t look particularly playful.

He allowed his mouth to work silently for a few seconds before he slowly forced out in the feline tongue, “Hello. Name is Riley.”

A moment later, after running through a few more possibilities of what the cat might be feeling, Riley decided to flop down on the ground. And that he did, gracelessly plopping down and watching closely for the cat’s reaction.

When the dog spoke, Backfire stood up staighter, a confused look on his face. "You can speak cat," he commented, too surprised to do anything other than state the obvious. Maybe this wouldn't be as bad as he had first imagined. "What do you want? If you've come to hurt the Clan..." Backfire trailed off towards the end of his sentence, not wanting to think about a dog like this loose in the Clan. But something told the warrior that this Riley wasn't dangerous. Just the way he had flopped down on the floor implied that he wasn't going to hurt anyone, but Backfire didn't want to take the chance.

  • Riley nodded eagerly, his ears flopping as he did so. “Yes!” he agreed enthusiastically. He was tempted to bounce over to the cat and pounce on him to show his joy, but he doubted the feline would consider that ‘friendly’. His tail wagging frantically, the Labrador Retriever mix questioned, “You part of a cat-pack?” He knew that wasn’t the right terminology, but he couldn’t remember the correct word. That didn’t matter, though, did it? Surely the cat would know what he meant.

A cat-pack? "Yeah, I guess it's a cat-pack of sorts," Backfire answered, still feeling a bit strange talking to a dog. "We call them Clans though. You're in WindClan territory." The bengal tom flicked his tail and looked up at the dog, starting to believe that he was friendly. "Why are you here anyway?" With a start, the warrior realised that he hadn't even told Riley his name. "I'm Backfire by the way."

  • Riley’s movements stilled as he took in Backfire’s words and, after a few moments of silence, replied, “I was running,” as if that answered everything. He paused again before adding, “Is your WindClan for cat-only?” He was unable to dim the spark of hope in his eyes as he watched Backfire and awaited an answer.
