    Annual Weyr: A DragonRiders of Pern Rp Thread



    Welcome to Annual Weyr. This Rp is situated in a post-AVIAS world where the altering of the Red Star did not work and the voice address system shut down. The DragonRiders have spread out across the southern continent by the Tenth Pass and Annual Weyr was founded in the Western Barrier Range.


    With ThreadFall imminent- only 4 turns away - the Weyr must grow in leadership, prosperity, and most of all, dragons.

    Annual Weyr is situated in the middle of the Western Barrier Mountain Range in the Southern continent. Named for the beautiful white flowers that bloom annually in the spring and summer, Annual Weyr is a beautiful vista all turn long. It's mountainous setting in the hot southern continent makes the temperatures in the Weyr the norm, with it being pleasantly warm in the summer, and cold in the winter. Annual Weyr's bowl is roughly diamond shaped, one tip pointing east, the other west, with the Star Stones on the east tip, the watch dragon sentry post on the west tip, and the foot entrance to the crater below that. The Weyr's lake is near this, being situated in the south sided corner. To enter the Weyr, people must walk the path that skirts the lake. Feeding Grounds are also next to the lake in pasture. The Hatching Grounds are located in the middle on the south side, with the WeyrLeader and Queens weyrs situated on either side. Directly across are the Lower Caverns, which also include the dining hall, kitchens, weyrfolk quarters, and spare rooms for mating flights. The Weyrling Barracks are on the north side, near the west tip next to the lake, with the infirmary and the store rooms, plus the feeding pens opposite it. On the northern end, on the north side is the Candidate Barracks. Annual Weyr has four Flights, each with at least three wings. These are the First Complex, or otherwise called WeyrLeader's Complex and include the weyrleader, his wing, and two others. The First Complex is considered the most prestigious and their individual weyrs are in the middle of the bowl on the south side, above the WeyrLeader's and the gold riders's weyrs. The Second Complex incorporates three wings, and it's leadership during fall is decided beforehand by the weyrleader, but will always be one of the wingleaders. The Second Complex is weyred above the Lower Caverns. Next, the Third Complex, which has the same leadership design and three wings, has weyrs on both the north side and the south side of the east tip. Finally the Fourth complex, portioning the same structure as the Third and Second, is weyred on the north and south walls of the west tip.


    Holds Beholden to Annual:


    Seven Islands Hold

    Seven Islands Hold is a small hold settled on a group of seven islands to the east of Annual Weyr in a huge lake fed by the Black Rock River. The Hold provides delicious fruit and fish, and most of the food for the Weyr is tithes from here. Lord Holder Daulin and his Lady Holder Rewna manage the place well, and have good relations with Annual Weyr.


    Black Rock Hold

    Situated in the hilly, jungle area on the banks of the Black Rock River, the hold's-and river's-namesake is for the rich deposit of black rock (coal) that inhabit the hills and jungle soils. The hold is a mix of a mining, crafting, and trading, being very diverse. Black Rock Hold supplies much of the Weyr's everyday supplies as well as it's fuels. Dangerous felines are common in the jungles around Black Rock, and the holders often hunt them for their wealthy pelts, and their Lady Holder, Zefra sometimes treats Annual Weyr with these priceless treasures. Lady Zefra keeps firm relations with Annual Weyr, if not a stern outlook on fair tithes, often leaning towards her cunning benefit.


    West Plains Hold

    West Plains Hold is located on the huge grassy plains to the northwest of the Weyr. The Hold's main function is farming and raising animals, and Annual Weyr receives most of it's heardbeasts and agriculture products from here. Lord Cuabrey and Lady Helva run the huge hold smoothly, and are on okay terms with the Weyr, but Annual has had past problems from the two being sticklers for tradition.

    Tips for making your character:


    1) I'm going to state this right now. There are a lot of high positions, but you mostly likely won't get exactly what you want. It will depend on whether you've read the books, your role-play sample, and how well your bio is. Don't fuss if you don't get what you want. Maybe after you make progress you can try again for that position you want.
    2. Remember, you don't have to be a DragonRider! Weyrfolk are fun to role-play as well.
    3. You don't have to start as a candidate. If you want, you can create a full-fledged DragonRider and I'll put you in a wing.
    4. Remember that male DragonRiders after Impression add an honorific ' to their name. For instance, Fergal would become F'gal.
    5. Your characters don't need to be all in their teens. We need adults, too guys!
    6. Be realistic please. This is science fiction Also- NO anime pictures, or too modern pictures of your character. Pern is in a medieval time period.
    7. I enjoy plots. It doesn't even have to involve the whole Weyr. It can be a subplot centering on your character.
    8. Please note you will be constantly updating your character as the rp goes on. Just let me know when so I can update it on this post.

    Okay! I'll look forward to reading your bio! As of now I'm excepting all riding colors but gold, we'll see if Ellaneth will lay a gold egg later, and high positions will be given out rather freely considered the thread's new, but positions always change with new WeyrLeaders. :)

    I've only read about two of these books and that was a long time ago xD So I'm waaay behind. But I'd love to join anyway.

    >Special Possessions> Both of her parents from the Hold were killed when she was young, she holds only two items as memeory to them. One is her mother's best dress, a delicate item made from the finest of Craftsman's silk. It is of the deepest of greens and trimmed with fine lace. It still holds some of her mother's old scent. She also holds a single piece of parchment with both of her parent's words on it. It is a letter that explained her heritage and how much that they loved her.

    >Closest Friends> She made very few friends when she was growing up, and those that she did ended up leaving her alone after the accident that tore her family from her.

She loves to spend her time caring for animals, romping around with her fire-lizard, flying through the sky on a dragon. They are heavens incomparible to any other in her mind.
    >Personal Information> She is slightly traumatized from losing all of her family so suddenly and then the Searchers had come and deemed her fit for a dragon. It had messed up her fragile mind to where it still is scarred deeply. After the physical scars had long faded, the emotional scars were still fresh wounds.
    >Personal History> She grew up in West Plains Hold but then an accident killed all of her known family and she became a orphan. Her and a bunch of other orphans were deemed fit to Impress upon a dragon and were taken to the Weyr. When many of them failed to Impress, they became fostoerlings of the Weyr.

    Teardrop, so far your bio is good. I can only see one problem so far.


    Pernese have very different names compared to Earth. That's because there is a tradition of combining parts of the mother's and father's name to produce the child's name. So 'Melody' would not be a practical name on Pern. Perhaps a variation would be used like, 'Mellani' or 'Melonda' instead.

    okay thanks. I tried to think of a good pernese name without copying any from the books. Thanks I'll take Mellani.

    Teardrop:
    There are some inaccuracies in your bio, and I have a few suggestions as well.
    Being a Lord Holder's daughter is a big thing on Pern. A Lord uses his daughters as political bindings-which basically means he marries them off to other Lord's sons at around 14-15 turns of age. This serves as making ties to other holdings. Therefore, Mellani would be married and with children, for a Lord would never give away his daughter to the Weyr.


    Also, women are considered to be wives and mothers- it is only in the Weyr that they are considered equal to men. So women are not allowed to Hold. That's a man's job, and Mellani's father would scorn the idea of appointing a daughter for the position of heir. And there is also the point that a person can't be a holder and a DragonRider. (The exception was AM's Jaxom in The WhiteDragon.)


    Finally, for your writing under, 'Closest Friends': Mellani is a DragonRider, which means she has different duties Ailith, who is a candidate. Given the size of Weyrs, these two would never meet unless Mellani's green searched Ailith. (Which can't happen as Ailith was searched way earlier and has been fostered at the Weyr for Turns.) It's also nice to get permission from the character's owner before claiming your character is 'BFFs'


    Suggestions:


    While Mellani might not able to be a Lord Holder's daughter, she can certainly be a cotholder's daughter. A cotholder is a man who has been granted permission by his Lord to run a smaller hold inside his territory. A cothold is made up of the holder and his family, his son's families, and perhaps some others. They are still poor, but at least aren't employed in drudgery in the major holds like most are.


    Orphans are clique, and I don't really like them. After Ailith, I'm putting a stop to them. I like to see fleshed out characters, with backgrounds and families. So have fun, and don't be shy to create a back story for your character.

    If need be I can change Ailith's bio so that she can have the orphan child and I could also make it so that she was searched by the green a couple of years back and didn't Impress. I wouldn't mind changing it at all, if it would make anything easier.
