Jewels shook her head wearily and looked around, everything blurring then becoming clear. "What happened?" she mewed groggily. She stood up, blinking. "Where am I?" she asked again, panicking. "What happened? What is this place? I need to get out!" she cried, and starting banging on her cage, yowling with all her might.
"Quit bang'n on the bars!"
Jewels looked over, and saw a raggedy old tom staring at her with huge gray eyes. She cocked her head curiously. "Who are you?"
"Names matter not, but if you must know I am Atom." The scrawny grey tom shook himself, then scratched his ear, muttering to himself.
"Aren't we going to try to get out of here?" asked Jewels.
"Naw, I've been here for'n years. I've been try'n to get out for'n years, never works," Atom meowed.
Jewels backed up, then ran to the front of her cage, smashing into the bars. She sat down with a thump, but her mood brightened when she noticed she had moved the cage. She ran into the bars again.
"I wouldn't knock on the floor if'n I was ya, that just gets ya inject'd fa-"
The cage fell on the floor. The door broke off.
"I'm free!" yowled Jewels, then she rushed to Atom's cage and hooked her claw into the lock, opening the door and beckoning him away. "Come on!"
The two cats rushed out of the shelter.
