  • The cool air swept down the desolate road, tousling the already windswept black hair of a boy. The sun peeked through the expanse of gray sky and highlighted the blue tones in his messy mop of hair. Wide, stormy gray eyes stared down at the road, bare feet scuffing the dirtied asphalt. It had been another day without food. Another dy to see the dead eyes of his mother and three younger sisters as he entered the house empty-handed for the third day in a row.

He lived in District 10. It wasn't as bad as District 11 or 12, but there were some parts of the town that had starving people wandering the streets, scavenging for food. Reden knew how to hunt and knew the plants quite well, but everything was dying. The animals, the plants, the people. District 10 would be soon reduced to nothing if these deaths continued happening. What made it even worse was that the Reaping was only a few days away. All his sisters were now eligible for the Reaping, and he was scared to death. Though he'd never let anyone know. He rarely ever showed true emotions anymore.

  • A girl sat alone, her golden brown eyes on the boy. Her mouth opened to ask, "No food?" She split the small loaf of bread she had in her delicate-looking hands, and gave half to Reden. "It's all I have, but you look like you need it." she remarked, a slight smile on her beautiful face.

Ashilyn, or Ash as she was called, didn't move from the stone wall she sat on, taking small nibbles of her half of the bread. The breeze blew through her caramel hair, making it fly everywhere, but she didn't care.

  • [size=1]Offica shivered in the breeze. Her skimpy clothes did little to protect her from the temperature and she didn't have anything to acquire more. A bird sung in the tree above her, its feathers almost matching her hair perfectly. She listened to its sweet song, savoring every moment because she knew exactly what she was dreading was about to come.
    The Hunger Games
The words stuck in her mind every day and she was never able to rid herself of them as they clung to her mind like a parasite to an animal. It drew nearer every day, looming over her like the pillars of clouds that came before a storm and just as menacing and deadly. It could change life as she knew it which wasn't much at all since her family had died. It had been a fire that destroyed her home. A flame that had changed her life forever.
After she had been orphaned, she later grew to believe that it had not been an accident, but a deliberate attack from the capital. Why? it had killed every one in her family except for one brother, at the bare minimum age. During the games, he poisoned himself with nightlock after hearing the dreadful news and Offica was officially orphaned.
She spent her days alone and survived with only a few crumbs of bread from the more generous offers, water from a trickle that was too small to be considered a stream and he only shelter from the night was a willow tree that hung like a veil around her as she slept.
When her brother died, the capital had sent someone to inform her, because she had no way of knowing the events of the Hunger Games. The messenger ended up being a high position in the goverment and left her with the message and a death threat. A threat that she would be chosen for the next games. The supposedly random way of picking players was, in fact, rigged and she knew with no doubt that she would be next. Fate or destiny, whichever it was, she was next, but she would not, she refused to go down with out a fight to the death and she would take as many of the stupid rich people as she could with her because they destroyed her and they would pay.
