Luna, a young lilac-point Siamese kit, was lost in a terrifying place. Scents of unknown cats overwhelmed her and her bleeding paws could walk no farther.
"Help!" She tried to call out, but the desperate plead came out as a whimper. Her mother, Moon, was laying on the thunder-path beside Luna... dead. The kit's deep copper eyes were welling with tears, and her tail was laying limp on the ground. If her mother had been one heart-beat later... She shuddered. That could be her body laying on the hot tar. Of course, she'd be dead soon enough without food.

Drift padded through the forest, the Siamese tom annoyed at his recent chase off. Of course, he really should have expected that. Not like clan cats took too kindly to loners. Or Rogues. Which, he was unsure of what he counted as. Shrugging to himself he drew his lips back in disgust as the scent of the twolegs motion objects rail reached his nose. He poked his head through the bushes and looked out across it. At first he wasn't really paying attention. Until, something small caught his eye. Curious, he moved silently through the bushes and cocked his head. It was a cat. Well, a dead cat. But something else. Was that a shrew of something? No... it was a kit!
-
Luna glanced up, fear widening her eyes. "HELP!" she wailed.
-
Drift blinked as he sat down. Well, what was he supposed to do. It was nature this way, wasn't it? Still, he supposed if he didn't want to be considered a rogue he should help. Or maybe he should leave it here and let a motion object hit this one too. Maybe put it out of its misery. "I'll think about it," he called to the kit. "On one condition. You have to walk over here, by yourself." He blinked again and watched the kit, waiting to see what it would do. His ears perked for the sound of any of the motion objects. Nothing so far. If the kit could walk over to him, he'd decide what to do with it.
-
Luna closed her eyes and attempted to stand. For the first time, she noticed her twisted leg. "ow!" she whimpered, so softly only she could hear. Mommy would want this. She loved me! she thought. She dragged herself over, pain shooting through her leg, before collapsing and crying.
-
Drift nodded his head, pleased by the kit's show of courage. "Well done," he said, looking down at her. "Enough with the tears. Life offers plenty of reasons to cry, a wound is not one of them. Loss is, and I do believe you will mourn your entire life, but now is not a good time." Standing up and looked around. He'd decided what to do with the kit, finally. She had courage, and she was a she-cat, but she was too young for him. Not to mention she was injured and where was the fun in that? So, instead of killing her after playing games like he normally would, he felt compelled to take her in. "Don't move," he said as he padded out onto the motion object rain. He gently leaned down towards the she-cat on the rail and sniffed, trying to make sure she was dead first. "You have a name?" he called back to the kit while he checked.
-
"I'm Luna," she said, gazing with admiration at the tom. He trusts me, I think! It was enough for her to squeal in delight. Somebody would save her! Hopefully.
-
Pleased with his observation, and a little unhappy the she-cat was actually dead, he picked her up and half carried, half dragged her off the rail. He'd seen what these motion objects did even when their prey was dead. It wasn't pretty, and not something a kit should see. Once he was back on the same side as the kit he swiftly dragged the mother into a bush, concealing her. He then returned to the kit, licking his muzzle. He'd hung out with Rosie and Dusk too much, the taste of cat blood was starting to be appealing. He'd have to change that. "Luna eh?" he asked as he looked back down at her. "My name is Drift," he said with a smile that melted all the older she-cat's hearts. A romantic and a kit, this was sure to go over well. "Lay down on your side, and let me take a look at that leg?" he asked. He was no medicine cat, but he knew a thing or two about injuries. He'd been on his own long enough.
-
"Thanks, Drift!" Luna purred softly, laying down. She liked this tom. He was fun, so she thought. She was awfully dense... It was horrible. "I-I'm going to be brave!" she promised, wincing as she straightened her leg.
-
Drift sighed as he sat down and crouched in order to get on the same level as the kit. There was no way he could take her back to his home. Rosie and Dusk would eat her. That wouldn't be a good thing after all the trouble he'd have to go through to get her home in the first place. They were a long ways away as it was. He shouldn't be worrying about this right now though. He had to figure out if it was broken or just twisted. When she moved it though he figured just twisted. "You should be alright so long as you stay off it for a bit. If I could find poppy seeds I'll give you some. They help with pain." He stood up and sniffed, but he couldn't smell anything over the stench of the rail. "You hungry?"
-
"No, and I don't need poppy seeds," Luna said proudly, gazing up at him. "I'm brave, right? Y-you'll keep me, right?" Fear hid behind the pride in her expression. She somehow felt he could never replace Moon, but she'd been wrong before. The tom was certainly charming and fun to be around, and he encouraged her to be brave.
-
Drift sighed as he looked back down at her. He could read her eyes easily enough. "Alright, no poppy seeds, no food." He perked his ears, listening again. In the distance the sound of one of the motion objects was starting to get closer. He stood his ground. They didn't dare drive off their rail. It was as if the grass scared them. However, the kit had asked him a question and this was one he was unsure of as of yet. What would he do with this kit now? "Well..." he said thinking to himself. "I"m probably not the best for you to be hanging around with," he warned the kit. "So, I'll offer you a choice," he decided. "You can hang around me, and I'll look out for you as best I can, but I'm not a clan cat, I'm a drifter. Or, I can bring you to a plan and let you stay with them. They'll accept you and teach you the ways of being a warrior, or whatever stories they feed to their kits. Up to you."
-
Luna turned her eyes on him, serious. "I can take care of myself, I promise!" A small leaf drifted by, and she clumsily grabbed it and shredded it. "See? I won't be a problem! I promise!" Luna hopped towards him and closed her eyes so tears would fall out, pressing her head against him. "I don't want to leave you," she whispered. "I'll do whatever it takes..."
-
Drift smirked and shook his head slightly when she grabbed the leaf and shredded it. He'd almost forgotten how innocent and free willed kits were. Well, she didn't want to be a clan cat, that was for sure, so he'd have to act like a dad. He figured this was probably karma being that he probably had a lot of fatherless kits in the world. A lot more than he could count. Unless the clans got mad and killed them, or their mothers did. Either way, he wasn't too concerned about it. This one though... he'd have to be. He jumped slightly when she pressed her head against him and blinked. Contact wasn't something he got unless he made the first move. "Alright then," he said shrugging, "you can stay." The motion object was getting closer still. Louder. "How old are you?"
-
"Two moons," she replied proudly, puffing out her small chest. "Nearly old enough to be real dangerous, you know!" She heard the rubbling and felt it in her paws. "What's coming?" she whispered suddenly.
-
Drift chuckled softly. Oh yeah, she looked so dangerous. It occurred to him then that if she was two moons, he'd have to train her a bit. Was he really a good choice for this? He knew how to fight, and hunt. He was really good at sneaking around, and defiantly good at getting into trouble, but could he teach? Well, he'd have to find out. But first, he'd have to address two things. One, her question, and two where to stay for now. Not being able to go home, an injured companion, and being a drifter would make this hard. "First off," he said as he curled his tail around her comfortingly, "this is called a rail." He motioned to the black that marred the forest. "A lot of cats call it something different, but I call it a rail." He looked down at her then. "And as for what's coming, I call them motion objects, for two reasons. One, you will always see them in motion if they are not sleeping. They never stand around and talk. Second, they are great big creatures that one ride on the rail. Inside of them are up walkers. The hairless cat things that try to catch you and keep you. They offer horrible tasting food, and they stink worse than skunks."
-
Luna laughed. "Smellier than skunks? What could be smellier than a---" She broke off, ears flattened with fear. The gigantic motion object flew past, throwing up pebbles and blasting the cats with foul-smelling smoke and wind. "Is that a motion object...?" she whispered softly, eyes wide. "Its scary!"
-
Drift chuckled as the object flew past. He didn't flinch, and he didn't try to see it either. It moved too fast for his eyes to focus on most of the time he saw them. "That's one of them, yes," he said softly. "They are scary, especially if you're on their rail. They never stop of cat, like you're seen." The last bit was said with a soothing tone, soft and gentle. "On the grass though, you have nothing to fear from them. Just don't get too close to the edge of the rail and you'll be alright." He looked from the direction the motion object moved, back to the kit besides him. "Alright, Luna," he said testing her name. He wasn't used to calling cats by their name except Rosie and Dusk. "Where shall we head off to? Are you ok to walk without pulling weight on that leg of yours?"
-
"Okay," Luna said, padding up to him. "Sorry... that wasn't brave, was it? I'm sorry, Drift!" Then she smiled at him. "I can walk just fine! And I don't want to bother you, we can go to your home!" She was oblivious, not noticing the tom's apprehension of taking her in. All she saw was a fun, charming tom who she trusted.
-
Drift smiled down at her. "You don't have to be brave all the time," he said soothingly. "You're a kit. It's only nature for some things to scare you little one." He seemed like he was actually pretty good at this. He froze slightly though when she said his home. He didn't want to picture that. Bringing the innocent kit into Rosie and Dusk's paws. That wouldn't end well, especially being as to why he was supposed to be here right now. He was supposed to be hunting down Sunclan apprentices. Oh well, he'd have to take the chance of getting his face mauled later. "How about... we don't go to my home, because I don't have one," he said smoothly.
