"He's my kits' father," said Waterskipper in a cold voice, but within that voice was a streak of hurt. Deep down she still loved him and she hated herself for that. "He ran away and left me when I was pregnant. Now he's back. Ripplestep," she cleared her throat, "don't you dare look at my daugher like that."
"I could make him leave if you want," said Lunecry. She wasn't up to Ripplestep's size at all, but she wouldn't be alone in her efforts, she was sure.
"No," said Waterskipper. "No. Let him stay." She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. When she let it out and look at him again he was still there, with his amazingly handsome face. She gazed up at him, surrounded by their kits. "Why? Why?" A single tear rolled down her cheek.
