  • "He's my kits' father," said Waterskipper in a cold voice, but within that voice was a streak of hurt. Deep down she still loved him and she hated herself for that. "He ran away and left me when I was pregnant. Now he's back. Ripplestep," she cleared her throat, "don't you dare look at my daugher like that."

"I could make him leave if you want," said Lunecry. She wasn't up to Ripplestep's size at all, but she wouldn't be alone in her efforts, she was sure.

"No," said Waterskipper. "No. Let him stay." She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. When she let it out and look at him again he was still there, with his amazingly handsome face. She gazed up at him, surrounded by their kits. "Why? Why?" A single tear rolled down her cheek.

  • Ripplestep cursed under his breath. D***it, this was so awkward. He wished he was one of those guys who knew how to end those things really fast, but he didn't even know what the hell he would do in the next five seconds.

He glared to Lunecry, this wasn't her business. Then Waterskipper complained at it, and the tom gave a half-roll of the eyes before turning it to the wall. Wow, he ALMOST felt like an apprentice again.

Looking to Waterskipper, his scowl deepened. Now that guilt was setting in, far more than before. She couldn't really think he'd have done any good by staying, did she? That wasn't a good excuse to leave, but honestly, he was so d*** unstable emotionally.

One part of him wanted to walk off, infuriated by the drama that was...sort of his fault, and the other wanted to just be able to crumble away and return to the days he felt like he had a real grip on his sanity. Either way, he didn't want to be here. Yet he was rooted to the ground.

"Uhhhh......." Was all that uttered from his mouth, Waterskipper crying didn't help any.

    Dragonkit blinked in shock.

Woah, THAT guy was HIS dad?

He didn't know how, but in mid-hyperventilation, he choked on his saliva. He started to hack, his little body shuddering from his surprise and the rest of him heaving from making a rather accidental and embarrassing spectacle of himself.

    ---------

Ripplestep eyed Dragonkit, forgetting everything else for a moment. "Is he okay???" He wasn't going to try to get any closer to the poor kit, though he looked to the young tom with concern. What had happened to him to make him start hacking up and freaking out? The tom didn't know, up until now the only thing he was thinking about was how to respond to the situation.

    Should he run off now?

No...no...that would probably get him killed by Waterskipper's offspring.

  • Her son's distress finally made Waterskipper snap to. She retrieved the kit by the scruff and started grooming him, losing herself in the action moreso than anything else. "He's fine. He's never seen you before--strangers startle him. He's shy."

"Don't you give us that look," said Lunecry. "We're not the ones who got you pregnant with kits and then walked out on you."

  • Ripplestep growled to Lunecry, "Stay out of it, you don't know anything." Ugh, he didn't like cats significantly younger than him. Okay, maybe he just didn't like Lunecry right now.

He couldn't help but wonder if any of the kits were his, and his whiskers twitched again. Okay...weird...but he felt anger boil in him. Why did everything go wrong? Why couldn't he think for a second?

Memories flashed, and after a glower and the clearly dysfunctional family-it was only a painful reminder of how he screwed everything up. Even before he was crazy.

He hissed, "F*** this!" And began to stalk off.

What was he going to do now?

    ....Kill himself maybe.

  • Lunecry growled, "Shut up. You're lucky we're not running you out of here anyway, Thunderclanner. You left MY mother pregnant and she's raising your kits alone--"

"Stop it--PLEASE don't fight in front of the kits," hissed Waterskipper, then Ripplestep ran off. Panic ensued in her heart. She sprang up. "Lunecry watch the kits. I'll be right back."

Lunecry could only watch her mother leave. She looked around at the kits. "Mommy's going to be back really soon okay? Everything's fine." Everything but that damned outsider tom who should've never come back. Everything had actually been starting to feel normal again.

    ~*~*~*~

Waterskipper raced out after Ripplestep. "Stop! Just stop..." She knew how unstable he had always been. What if this pushed him over the edge? She still didn't even know what had happened. He might be innocent. She had to believe it. She wouldn't lose him a second time. Even in her fear she thought, I'm doing just what I told both my daughters not to ever do...

  • "Orchidkit, Bridgekit, Aunty? are you in there?"came a sweet, gentle female voice.Sure enough a full grown pretty calico she-cat walked into the nursery.Kiosplash's amber eyes looked around anxiously for her kin.She wanted to see her grandma's kits for herself, it was only now was she getting the chance to do so sadly. The young warrior looked around the nursery, both joy and sorrow in her eyes as flashbacks ran through her head of her kithood."So much has happened in my life, look at me now.My assessment went well and I'm a warrior now."thought the newly named calico, Kiosplash. She let out a sigh as she licked a scarred foreleg. But at seeing her grandmother race out she let out a yelp, tripping over her own paws."Ok, what got grandma's tail up in knots!?"she meowed in shock as she rose up back to her paws.

  • OOC- x3 Sure. You want to make it, or should I? 8d(Maybe I should, Ripplestep IS the one running off x3)

    --------------------------------------

Dragonkit felt his heart beating fast, and looked to Lunecry and his mother.

What the hell was going on? Seriously!! He didn't understand what was so important to Waterskipper...was that guy really his dad? It was hard to believe, Dragonkit had thus far grown up without that fatherly figure in the family.

Lunecry also seemed very, very angry. With a look of concern, the tom pressed against his older sister with a questioning and confused gaze.

The tom was a little bit worried now.

    ---------------

Shrikekit felt nearly blown away as some tom nearly made him fall over. "Hey, WATCH IT!" He spat. Not recognizing Ripplestep, especially since he had only seen the tom once or twice.

The tom looked to the others, all either dazed or ticked off.

He also realized the cat who had nearly made him fall on his back had a foreign scent-not of Windclan, and that his grandmother had chased off after him.

"Did someone die?" Was the first thing he asked. Actually, the REAL question was, 'did someone get killed?'

He looked to the other cat entering the situation, his adoptive and older sister Koisplash. "Hey Koi...." He greeted, almost indifferently. The she-cat had never been THAT kind to him, more of toward his other sister. Whatever, it wasn't that big of a deal. Shrikekit didn't need a favorite sibling, or anything like that. He was fine on his own.

He coughed a bit to get rid of those more negative thoughts and commented, "I have no idea."

  • "It's okay honey," said Lunecry, grooming Dragonkit and not knowing what else to say to him right now except that his entire family was once again on the edge of a dysfunctional meltdown. She decided not to air that. "Koipaw--Koisplash...hi...Wish you didn't have to come in at this particular time...Grandma's boyfriend just showed up again, after being gone for two moons." She sighed. "Orchidkit and the others are still out on some field trip. Congratulations by the way. I never got to say that to you. I'm proud of you. And, hi Shrikekit...How are you?" There, does that cover everything?

ooc: Ok Em, you make the thread then with your next reply :)

    -----------------------

Dragonkit doubted his sister's words, but he didn't question it. Not by body language, and sure as hell not verbally. He flicked his tail a bit in thought as he looked out in the distance. That tom, very possibly his father, and his mother growing smaller in a rather quick fashion.

He wanted to follow, so badly, but he was two weeks. Even if he tried to get there, he'd either be killed by something else, or more likely stopped by one of his older relatives. He had a lot of those, too.

Looking to Koisplash, his expression became curious. Who was she? Her name had already been exposed to nearby ears, but what relevance did she have?

Wait, did she just call his mother grandma?

    ----------------------------

Shrikekit looked to Koi, and blinked.

"Oh, right, you're a warrior. Bet that's fun," He offered a small smile, but it was short-lived as Lunecry explained the situation.

"You'd think old people would get over the gooey, love bull by then. They're supposed to be wise, after all." Okay, he KNEW Waterskipper wasn't that old, but she was a grandma! Didn't that count for...anything?

He twitched his whiskers, "Oh yah...I think I saw 'im before. Who's that guy? He seems weird, and stupid-nearly knocked me over, the clutz." He had neared the family.

Looking to the younger group of kits he grinned, "I used to love to mess with cats like you, cats younger than me." He still did like to bully, somewhat, but it just wasn't the same after his mother died. In fact, before that it was a little less of bullying, now...not so much. Though he had some sort of weird moral-don't bully family.

Maybe just because he didn't want to be blamed if they died seconds after he said something rude. His mother died like that, seconds after he had misbehaved.

  • "I thought that tom's scent smelled formilar.Don't tell that's the very same guy that mother, father, and I found on our territory."meowed Kiosplash as she came over. But at hearing her younger brother she gave a purr, nuzzling him in a sisterly manner. She couldn't help but blush out of embarrassment at her aunt and little brother's praise."Thanks Aunty and Shriky.Truthly I came to see grandma's kits, I haven't gotten a chance till now."she purred. At spotting Dragonkit the young calico warrior went over in a slow, delicate manner."Hello, who's this cute little furball? is he one of grandma's kits?"cued Kiosplash.

  • "It is. You know it," said Lunecry, it was obvious to her that it was obvious to the younger warrior. "Grandma....had an affair with a Thunderclanner. There. I said it...and it's about time someone just came out and said it, because everybody knows anyway and I can't take this anymore." She hung her head. Why Mum? Her mother had always been her rock. Now what--had she lost her marbles?

Lunecry knew that wasn't it at all. Waterskipper had been lonely, and when she had taken time out to rehabilitate that oversized piece of Thunderclan pond muck, they'd both been crazy enough to fall in love, and crazier to think it would work long term. Every single one of the adults in her family--their lives were either a dramatic mess, or a total train wreck. What sort of example was this setting for all their kits?

She was shaking her head and looking at the bedded floor. "Nobody ever gets over it, Shrikekit. You're never too old to fall in love and certainly never too old to make mistakes."

  • "Hey Koisplash!" Splotchkit chirped. "That's Dragonkit." Splotchkit had been paying so much attention to Dragonkit's choking and Ripplestep who apparently was ehr grandfather that she ahdn't noticed how hot Shrikekit was! She had something going on for him, only seeing him hang out with their family a few times so he thought Shrikekit wasn't related to her so she wanted to be his mate! Yowch! "That Thunderclanner's such a wussy for knowcking up grandma, then leaving her, then showing up aand acting like a piece of s***!" Splotchkti complained.

  • "Splotchkit you watch your mouth." Lunecry hissed at her daughter. "This is the nursery and those words are NOT permitted here. And it'll do nothing to sort this whole thing out. Just calm down, and everything'll be okay."

  • The tom nodded to Koisplash, noticing and actually slightly appreciating her friendly behavior. Most of Shrikekit's family experiences weren't positive.

He gave a blunt, "Well if that's the case, they really need to stop insisting elders are so frickin smart. Last thing kits need are to be deluded with the thought they must be carbon copies of apparently not-so-special, not-so-wise cats. Because if nothing else, I know the main excuse adults have for acting superior and grounding a kit is, "I know more..' or 'I'm smarter than you.'"

He wasn't really trying that hard to be rude, he just didn't care to be sugary about his opinions. At all.

He shrugged, no big deal really. Well, except for when you delved to what caused the subject...but he didn't really need to hear about the drama of good ol' granny's life.

"He sounds more like stupid to me...I don't see wussy being part of it so much." Then again, Shrikekit hadn't been around to watch what happened.

He didn't stare, but he couldn't help but find Splotchkit a tad strange. Eh, whatever. No one in this family was ever REALLY that normal.

"Everything will be okay, huh?" Shrikekit looked ready to go on a whole rant in disagreement with those words. That was what he had been told when his mother died, nothing was ever okay. It was something you said when you were too afraid to realize you might be royally screwed.

Too bad you don't get anything else royal.

"Yah...well...I never really saw Waterskipper's kits much before now either. Well better two weeks late than a whole moon." His grin returned again, partially joking a bit. It wasn't a big deal, two to three weeks. The kits were like robots during that time period, only alive to survive, the whole memory system didn't really work for anyone other than when it was directed toward their mother until after some time of development.

So, as far as Shrikekit was concerned, he just happened to have very excellent timing with his younger relatives.

  • "Yes, everything will be okay," said Lunecry. "We're alive. And in terms of that, compared to my less fortunate sister Hailstone and my father, well, things already HAVE gone well for us. If we don't go into this with a positive attitude then we don't stand a chance."

She looked down at the kits, her siblings, or rather half siblings, she was babysitting for the time being. "Yes...these are your new aunts and uncles. Meet Cornkit, Gravelkit, Dragonkit and Whitekit."

  • Cornkit was very astonished when she finally met her 'Dada.' Cornkit was not quite use to speaking. She pressed herself against her shy brother, Dragonkit. She turned to Gravelkit. "Why is sissy (meaning lunecry) mean towards 'Dada?'" she asked. She was so confused!

  • "Because Dada went away and wasn't here to help Mommy or love you guys." Lunecry softened her voice, but it was hard. Her anger was that great. And there her mother had gone, mooning after him anyway. Just like she had with Ochrewood, and Hailstone had with Cricketstride--although Cricketstride to his credit had begged, and had not abandoned her again. But still. Great Starclan...were they really that weak?

  • OCC: Sorry i haven't replied in a while... I was sick :(

Whitekit smiled and was about to join the scuffle between her sister and brother, when a new tom joined their already-crowded nursery. She would've normally padded right up to him and introduced herself, but noticed how the others had reacted. One cat, Lunecry?, had confronted him, and her mother was crying. "Mama?" She ran over to her siblings, staying as far away from the tom, and as close to her mother as possible. She felt, then watched as her mother ran after the tom, and mewed after her. She tried to understand what had happened. "He's our Dada?" Her eyes jumped from one cat to another, and fell on another kit. She walked over to him slowly. His scent told her that he was her brother. "Hey." She was much closer to Gravelkit and Cornkit. She didn't even know this kit's name. She licked her paw, and swiped it over her ears. The blue tabby kit gazed around the nursery, suddenly unsure of herself.

  • "Yes, honey, he is. I just hope that if Mommy decides she wants Daddy to stay, that he really does stay. But even if he doesn't, Mommy and all of us still love you very much." Lunecry wished she could gouge Ripplestep's eyes out. That scumbag had taken advantage of her mother's hospitality!
