The Spirits of Shikoku?
Shikoku is a large island providence off of the coast of eastern Japan. The whole island is dotted with sacred shrines, and the people are often considered old-fashioned.
The Spirits of Shikoku (or "Spirits", for short) are a band of feral cats that live in the mountainous southern half of Shikoku. Their lifestyle is based off the samurai code, Bushido, and the Japanese religion, Shinto.
History
The Spirits were formed by a kittypet who left his home when his owner passed away. From observing the activities of his twoleg--who was very devoted to Shinto-- he was able to pick up the basic concepts, and they inspired him. He traveled Shikoku, sharing his religion with others, and slowly, this cat began to accumulate followers. The cat led his followers to safety in the territory that became the territory of the Spirits. In the starting point of the roleplay, this cat (referred to the current Spirits as "Father") has died and the Spirits are on their third leader. So while it is a relatively new group, it is not entirely in its infancy.

The Spirits believe strongly in kami, or the countless spirits that are present in nature and every aspect of their lives. They believe kami will help them, and they believe that when a cat dies, they will become a kami and watch over their old companions. But kami can also be spiritual beings who never existed in life; thus, their religion is like a mix of minor gods and kami ancestors. They believe every cat has a destiny they are meant to follow, so while they encourage kits to follow certain paths, they never force them to.
Their Bushido beliefs stem from the 8 major elements of the Bushido code: loyalty, devotion, obedience, duty, respect for parents and ancestors, respect, self sacrifice, and the honor of the dead. Generally, “self-sacrifice” entails a small to moderate self-injury to make up for a dishonorable act, and is relatively rare in the Spirits. For foreign “captured” cats, treason, or those wishing to join, purification is the preferred method.
Heir ceremony - Takes place when the ruler is nearing retirement or death. Much fresh kill is caught and in the morning, eligible heirs (royal offspring) are tested in their knowledge; parents, masters, and the kami-speaker will all question them on basic knowledge and different scenarios they may face as rulers. Next they will participate in a tournament, facing each other and the strongest guardians. Throughout both events, points are kept. When the event is over, an heir is crowned and there is much celebrating.
Pupil initiation and graduation - The ruler facilitates both, along with the master of the field the cat wishes to go into. Both ceremonies are followed with the other Spirits touching noses with the newly promoted cat for good luck.
Purification - The ruler and kami-speaker give the receiver six scratches: two on the face, six on their sides and flanks, and two on their tails. They are not to receive medical attention until they have bled for a while. Before and after purification the cat is isolated, allowed to see only the kami-speaker.
Moon vigil - Once a moon, when the moon is biggest, all cats who are not kits or queens observe an all-night vigil. The ruler may say a few words before the vigil starts.
The Journey - an annual trek around and outside of the Spirits territory for older cats; meant to be a spiritual journey, and also one to show their maturity and bond with other cats also embarking on it. The kami-speaker always goes, and usually the emperor or empress will also attend, though this is usually only after the ruler has found a mate to manage the camp while they are away. The journey lasts about a quarter-moon.

The Spirits live in the southern half of Shikoku, which is mountainous and less populated than the north; the territory of the Spirits is a dip between four mountains. Here, there is little snow in leaf-bare and the temperature is pretty comfortable throughout the year. The Spirit camp is located near the center of the dip in a small gorge. The entrance is much less steep than the other walls, allowing for the elders and younger cats to leave when they wish. Around the camp are wide pine trees, bushes, and the occasional cherry tree. To the west of the camp runs a clean creek where they get their water. Connected to the mouth of the creek is a cave with a pool inside that the kami-speaker visits it speak with the kami.
The emperor and empress' den is a niche in the rocky side of the gorge, slightly elevated so they can watch the camp. It appears small from the outside, but is actually quite spacious. The kami-speaker and his/her pupil stay in a large, fallen log; it has plenty of spots for the sick and herb storage. The den for masters and the guardians, caregivers, and gatherers is made by a hollowed tree joined with a wide, sweeping bush. The pupils' den is in an opening in the rock like the rulers, but it's smaller and at ground level. Finally, the nursery is located underneath two low-lying pine trees, where the ground is covered with soft pine needles.
Prey: mice, fish, chipmunks, flying squirrels, and many common birds (sparrows, crows, robins, thrush, pheasants, pigeons, etc.)
Enemies: loners and rouges wishing to do harm, foxes, bears, and badgers

High positions are: Empress (or emperor; currently empress), empress' mate, Kami-speaker, Kami-speaker's pupil, master guardian, master gatherer, and master caregiver.
Empress
This cat watches over the affairs of the Spirits, like a clan leader.
Moth [Little Lotte]
Mate of Empress
This cat (also called an emperor/empress) is not originally part of the royal line but becomes the mate of royalty, and acts as "deputy" to the Spirits. The royalty-line ruler still has the most authority.
[TBA]
Kami-speaker
The medium between the physical world and the "kami", or spirits that live in a spirit world. The kami-speaker is expected to receive and interpret messages from the kami, and also to preach of the Spirit religion to the other cats. It is also the kami-speaker's responsibility to care for the sick and injured.
Aaricia [Musica]
Kami-speaker's pupil
The apprentice to the kami-speaker. Generally, the process for selecting a pupil is lengthy because a confirmation from the kami is necessary before a final selection can be made. The kami-speaker's pupil is not allowed to preach, but is allowed to help with care of the sick.

Master gatherer
The master gatherer is the most skilled gatherer. They are usually older in age, and their main job is to help gatherers continue to learn improve.

Lotus [Katatonic]
Shiba [Tantan~]
Akira [Little Lotte]
Hinata [Little Lotte]
Pupils
Pupils are the apprentices. They choose their own path, but are influenced to go into a field that uses their talents. Royal pupils specialize in the field of their choice, but receive lessons from all fields, so as to be well-rounded. Kits usually become pupils when they are 4 moons old.
None
Kits
Kittens not yet pupils. Royal kits begin to get leadership training from their parents.
None

1. The emperor/empress’ decrees are to be obeyed, unless the kami-speaker declares the emperor/empress gone against the Religion, in which the punishment is purification and death, purification and expulsion, or purification and forced retirement, depending on the situation.
2. The kami-speaker’s words are to be heeded and never ignored. The kami-speaker is not to have kits, to keep their spirituality pure.
3. Should a kami-speaker have children, the general punishment is either purification and expulsion or purification and forced retirement.
4. The masters will appoint pupils tutors, and the royalty-line emperor/empress will approve or reject this proposal.
5. Purification will involve the ruler and kami-speaker. If the ruler or the kami-speaker needs purification, then the one not receiving it will perform the ritual (emperor and empress or kami-speaker and ruling counterpart).
6. Those breaking the rules of the Religion will go through purification, and those breaking the rules of honor will go through a self-sacrifice.
7. Kits will become pupils when they are at least 4 moons, and will "graduate" when their tutor feels they are ready.
8. Cats who are not pupils can begin having pupils when they are 12 moons old.
9. All cats who are not incapacitated must attend both the festival that will decide the ruler's heir and the monthly vigil.
10. Kami-speakers cannot be children of the emperor and empress unless a strong sign is received.
11. Traitors will be purified and killed or purified and expelled.
12. Respect nautre and the innocent living.
1. Follow site rules. This also means no godmoding, powerplaying, or auto-attacking/killing.
2. If you have a high position and become inactive without notice, after two weeks I will PM you as a warning. If by a month you still have not been on, I will temp out your character and PM you. If you have not been on for three months, I will PM you and your character will be permanently adopted out.
3. Do not drastically alter an active plot without discussing it with me first. I do listen to suggestions, so don’t be afraid to PM me about one you have! :)
5. Have good punctuation and capitalization, decent grammar, keep OOC discussion to a minimum (or at least post a substantial amount along with your OOC), and keep one-liners to a minimum. This is an advanced group, after all!

Names?
Names should not be clan-based, unless you have a really good explanation as to how a clan cat got all the way to one of Japan's islands. Two-part names are still okay, as long as they aren't in clan format. ;) Both Japanese and English names are also acceptable, so don't feel pressured to choose one or the other. But as a general rule, the names should not contain the words "Spirit", "Shikoku", or "Kami" because the cats hold these in very high regard.
Heir?
Should the blood-line ruler die, then his or her mate will become ruler. If the blood-line ruler dies without kits or a mate, then the dynasty ends and the kami-speaker will appoint an appropriate next ruler. If the blood-line ruler dies and his or her mate is also dead, the appointed heir will take the throne. Heirs can be challenged by non-bloodline cats anytime before the heir becomes emperor or empress. They will be subjected to the same tests they were given during the heir festival.
