What to do? | Songpaw, o

  • She has been in camp for way too long today. She wasn't chosen for any patrols, so apprentice tasks such as checking the elders for ticks and cleaning the fresh kill pile had been left to her. She feels like she is forgetting something, but no one has called her out on and she had become distracted. She had sunbathed, heard some stories from the elders, bothered a few warriors still left in camp and even groomed. Despite it all, she was bored. Then sometime after sunhigh a leaf drifted though the wind, landing a few tail lengths away.

Now, the small tortie point apprentice is standing low to the ground, in a form that resembles a hunters crouch. Her blue orbs are focused leaf is several tail lengths away. Her fur is too short to touch the ground, but her stance is too low to walk properly - which can be seen as she takes a few steps forward andwobbles on her paws. She rights herself, then takes another step forward. snap! a twig breaks under her front paw. She sighs in furstation and stands up. Glaring at the uncaught leaf now a tail length away.

  • "When hunting, your eyes need to be not only on your prey but also your surroundings." Tawnydove offers, trying to be helpful but probably could come off as annoying as he makes his way over to Songpaw. He had noticed her eyes on the leaf when it began to fall and watched her try to "hunt" it. He remembered doing it similarly as a kit for fun as a loner, though he was less trained at the time than Songpaw so it was probably done... terribly. But of course the leaf didn't have ears or eyes, so he had caught it every time. At least the she-cat had enough sense to realize she made a noise, and if that were real prey the hunt would've failed.

Then again... if you were fast enough on your paws maybe a cat would still have a chance.

"But stepping on a twig is a mistake even the most experienced warriors make sometimes- heh... It happened to me a couple days ago- I didn't see it. Through all the tall grass- and not that I'm all that experienced of a warrior either but... You get so focused on the prey your hunting you hardly process anything else around you. Just gotta try and remember to look over your surroundings with each step you take." The feline probably got plenty of tips from her mentor already, hell she probably even understood her mistakes but... That was a warriors job right? To be a pain in the tail and correct everything an apprentice did wrong. He remembered getting frustrated when he was new to SkyClan when all the warriors would do was assume he didn't know things. "...Why don't you try again?"

  • “You also need to engage your core muscles more,” Shrike said as she dropped her rabbit on the prey pile. For herself she selected a plump field mouse, though she didn’t set into it immediately. Instead, she let it dangle sadly from her claws. “I’d bet my whiskers your chest and belly are as limp and loose as our friend here’s tail.” Was she soft about it? No. But Songpaw was training on how to kill. Mincing words had no place in training. And Shrike, as a rule, didn’t do soft. What did was know her stuff. Almost as an afterthought she added, “And get your legs under up you, you aren’t a lizard. Don’t splay out like one.”

    "Speech."

Snakekit listened carefully as her Clanmates critiqued Songpaw's attempt at hunting down a leaf. She tried to make a mental note of everything they had mentioned, but it was a lot for the cream and tan Bengal to take in and in the end she probably had missed some things. She supposed one of the more important things was not to make noise. She had noticed if one made a lot of noise it caused nearby birds to scatter. Too much movement and the bugs hiding in the grass would take flight.

She hoped they wouldn't make her try it too. Practicing in front of everyone like that would make her nervous and probably mess it up. Snakekit knew she would have to get over that soon if she expected to train with her mentor in a moon or so.

I hope I can do it. She mused, paws sparking with apprehension.

  • Songpaw was not focused on her surroundings. When Tawnydove suddenly spoke to her, the young apprentice had leapt into the air and her fur bristled. "Oh starclan! You nearly scared my whiskers off!" She joked, licking her chest a few times while her fur went down to hide her embarrassment. Tawnydove basically admitted to watching her attempt to catch the leaf, since she is now giving advice. That realization heats Songpaws pelt. She had forgotten she was in camp, where anyone could be watching her fail.

Though embarassed at the warrior watching her, the apprentice feels grateful for the advice. Not many warriors would take their time out of their busy schedule to help a bored apprentice. Songpaw focuses on Tawnydove, taking her advice seroiusly. Even if she had heard it all before - which she hadn't - she obviously was doing something wrong and can't be unappreciative of advice.

She crouches down again, per Tawnydoves instruction to try again, but before she could start her stalking Shrike approaches. Warriors are so smart. She decides after hearing Shrike's advice. She is oblivious to the bluntness of both cats, insteading focusing on their willingness to give advice in the first place.

A moment after Shrike finishes, Songpaw drops to a crouch. This time, the apprentice raises her stance which in turn lifts her stomach. Steadier, but this is hard! Unused to engaging her muscles like this, the apprentice can feel the strain. Very quickly she feels herself straining to maintain her stance. A half a second later she has to stand up. She shakes her legs one by one.
