I keep them in a jar | Catching fireflies

  • Summer would be coming to an end soon, the weather was already starting to change, oh it was still rather warm most days, but it was starting to get cooler, the heat of mid-summer fading away as the days passed and autumn drew closer. A lot of other things were coming to an end with the end of summer, but chief among those in her mind, were the fireflies she had seen out in the peninsula at night. Wavepool knew this was something she should have done much earlier into the summer, there were far less fireflies out and about now then there had been then, but, with the slowly coming change in weather, the fireflies would soon vanish, back underground to wait until next year. These next few days would be the last time anyone would see them for the next year, so, now was her last chance, to get out there and catch a few of them.

The azure covered tabby had gathered more then enough jars for this little trip, at least thirty of them to be precise, all stacked into a small cart for her to carry around, though she had more that she could bring if they ended up needing them, though she severely doubted they'd need any more then this. A few notices had been put up in preparation for this around the mansion, just to make sure that she got at least a little attention for this, but it was much simpler then just going around and trying to personally find anyone who might be interested. "Alright, we're going to be heading out shortly, is everyone ready?" she asked, feeling a little excited herself for this, it was going to be good, relaxing fun, a nice evening to just get a good little break from the stressful task of helping Penny care for their many kids.

  • - Visually tuckered out by the prior work week, even Cairo couldn't deny from himself that he needed something that was just nice and relaxing to wind down after all that had happened as of late.

Reading was just as hard and slow as it had always been (perhaps even more so, with the average advertisement placing being above his head and resting line of sight, now), but the Underboss had nonetheless managed to catch wind of the firefly catching event and figured it would be just about what he had needed.

After all, this was a seasonal sort of event. If he didn't do this now, at the end of his first summer within the Cartel, he'd have to wait the better part of a year before any chance like this would show up again.

Taking a seat nearby Wavepool (who was likely a skosh taller than him, at this point-- but Cairo didn't even want to check), the feline offered a small smile. "Ready," he affirmed. Though he wasn't as excited as Wavepool was, Cairo still figured this would be a good enough time.

  • Having not skimmed over Wavepool's notices (he tended to ignore posters and placards, considering how he's generally too short to read them, anyways), the lieutenant donned an intrigued expression upon observing the aqua-coated feline and the jar-bearing cart near her. Although he was somewhat of a night owl, Jasper had yet to roam outside past sundown - hence, he didn't know about the fireflies which inhabited the peninsula. Briefly casting a glance to Cairo, who seemingly grasped the nurse capo's intentions, the achromatic tabby sauntered towards the duo. "What's going on here, then?" he enquires, beholding the sheer amount of containers within the cart.

  • What was the last time Dee gone out to catch fireflies- had he been a pup? Now, beyond picking flowers, he usually didn't like disturbing the world outside. Where there were feral animal dens, he left them be, and past a certain point on their "lawn" the unkept world deserved to remain just that: untouched, and left to thrive. Knowing Wavepool's kindness, however, Dee could only assume that they'd be releasing the fireflies the same night they caught them, and putting their duties aside for a relaxing, lighthearted, and goalless task was a lovely idea. As far as he was concerned, it was just what they all needed.

"Catching fireflies. You're welcome to join, Jasper," he answered on behalf of their small group, slipping a pair of white booties over his paws, slinging a messenger bag over his shoulder for flowers, and fitting a large, floppy, white sun hat with holes for his ears over his head (the fact that they were going to be out under the moon, and not the sun, didn't negate the fact that it looked cute on him). The capo seemed fairly relaxed, for once. The excitement that showed in his smile was calm, rather than energetic, and his voice was softer rather than bubbling.

Despite the fact that he had no idea what was going on Gamal approached the groups glowing and swirling auras all huddled around one another. A look born of both curiosity and confusion glazed over his usually neutral expression as he came to a stop between Dee and Jasper. what were they doing? The smilodon guessed that he would find out soon enough as he normally tried to piece things together.

  • Honestly, Battery didn't see the point in this. The majority seemed ready to go and chase flies around a field for an hour or so, so he didn't say anything at first. Whatever, Cairo was going to you could bet that Battery would give it a go too. Coming to sit beside the catsune, he tilted his head and glanced down at Wavepool.

"Can you catch them without killing them? Or will I be squishing a few dozen flies between my paws," Battery asked, chuckling to himself. Maybe he had a habit of catching flies when he was a pup, but he couldn't remember such small details like that. If he had, he'd definitely had killed them, and probably eaten them as a snack, too.

  • Oh no, the child had caught onto Batterychicken's question.. He had immediately rushed out, happy to educate the male even though it was more of a joke than an actual question.

"Well, usually, people use glass jars to collect them. It's said if you poke holes in the top of the jar, the fireflies will be similar to a nightlight. Although, it's a bit odd considering the lack of oxygen would eventually lead to the fireflies demise- however, it is a very popular activity-"

On the child continued to ramble until someone stopped him, and when they did, Gamal would soon distract the child enough to cause Morpheus to leave the crowd for a few seconds to gently touch Gamal's familiar shoulder with a paw. He sat down immediately, tracing hieroglyphics into the ground for Gamal to feel and understand.

'We are catching fireflies. Do you want to join us?'

The child was unsure if Gamal would be able to considering his.. handicap, but the child would try to include him nonetheless.

Turning back to the group, Morpheus grinned at Jasper, Dee, Cairo, Wavepool, and Batterychicken.

"Will you be fast enough to catch them, however?"

  • AND EVERY TIME I THINK THE PLANETS ARE ALIGNIN'

Gamal's attention drifted in some direction off to the side, taking in the bland swirling aura of grey and black to suggest he might have been looking at nothing more than a mere wall. However, when he felt a gentle paw tap along his broad shoulder the smilodon immediately turned to look at the familiar aura of Morpheus. Curiosity restored, Gamal faced the boy as he wrote something, watching as his wispy blue forearm wiggled about along the ground. Once finished Gamal patted along the black nothingness he perceived as the ground but once he found the edges of the carved hieroglyphs he spread his toes to read them. A flash of surprise coated his features as he looked back over at the child. When did he learn to write in hieroglyphics and so fluently? Had he not been able to differentiate the difference between Morpheus and his mother he would have thought this to be Cleopatra by his side. Nevertheless, he offered Morpheus a small smile accompanied with a nod of his head. It had been quite some time since he last caught fireflies but it would be nice to try the activity again. Using a claw he began to etch his own hieroglyphics. When did you learn to write so fluently?

  • Oh, good, it looked like a few crewmates actually would be joining her for tonight, she had really been a bit worried about whether or not anyone would have even been interested in something like this. It was so nice to see that those notices she had put up were actually working, that she wouldn't be headed out there by herself for this. She already had a nice little spot scoped out too, one she had found the previous night that seemed to have far more fireflies then most of the rest of the peninsula combined. It had been a fantastic light show, and, hopefully, tonight would end up being a repeat of that, or maybe, if they were lucky, it'd be even better!

Wavepool still couldn't get over the massive change in height that Cairo had gone through in just a night, it was just so disorientating to have to look at him straight on. She was used to having to crane her head up to look at the massive hybrid, who towered over here, nearly four times her total height, but now, now he was nearly the same size as her, maybe even a bit smaller, and that, that was strange. A nice, relaxing night like this would probably do the Underboss a lot of good though now that she thought about it, he always seemed tired, and a little stressed, he really did look like he needed a bit of time to just have some fun, de-stress a bit. "Nice to see you're joining, Cairo!"

Turning to Jasper next, the Capo gave a nod at Dee's words to the former, who probably hadn't read any of the notices she had put up, but maybe they could still get him to come along with them. "Mhm, you should come with us Jasper, it'll be a lot of fun, I promise" she said with a smile to the lieutenant. Gaze passing back over to Dee, the tabby couldn't help but pause at her fellow Capo's state of attire, namely, the fact that he was wearing a hat right now, and those booties as well. She really didn't get the point of wearing those, either of them really, there was no sun out, so a hat really wouldn't do much other then be somewhat aesthetically pleasing, and the booties...ok, she couldn't really say much about those, not when she didn't have to worry about getting her paws dirty.

"Oh, n-no, no no no, we're not killing them, just trying to catch them in these jars!" She quickly answered Battery's question, no they were definitely not going to be killing any of the little bugs tonight if she could help it. "If you don't think you can do that, I might have a little net that you could use, b-but please try not to kill any of them." She was planning on letting them go later tonight anyways, returning them back to the forest, and she did hope that everyone else let the ones that they caught go when the time came. Would she be fast enough to catch any of them though? "I will be, and it shouldn't be too hard for anyone else, they're not that fast. Oh, um, will Gamal be joining us too?" It was probably best to ask Morpheus, since he seemed to have an easy time communicating with the smilodon

Brandy's a little late to the party; she only sees one of the notices for this little event as she's wandering about the evening it's supposed to happen, and with pricked ears she reads it and wonders if the people participating have left yet. Quickly she makes her way to the mansion's front doors, and with a bit of relief is quick to spot the group that's gathered and the jars they're bringing off to the side. Cool, she made it. "Can I come?" asks the hostess, trotting down the steps to meet everyone. She stops close to Morpheus, offering him a very gentle nudge and a smile.

  • The thing was: When Morpheus had his head set on studying something, he spent an awful long amount of time obsessing over it. Once he read something once, he almost Always remembered it. So when he had got his paws on a book about hieroglyphics from cleopatra's bookshelf, he had studied the language until he passed out from exhaustion. Reading the older males writing, Morpheus let a soft hum leave him in response.

'When I want to learn something, I spend a lot of time doing so. It's a talent of mine.'

When Brandy nudged him, the child smiled at his aunt drowsily before writing down Wavepool's concerns.

'They're asking if you're going to join us. Do you want to?'

  • AND EVERY TIME I THINK THE PLANETS ARE ALIGNIN'

There were more hieroglyphs being written based on the way Morpheus' paw was moving. However he took a moment to look up in the direction of Brandy after taking note of her swirling aura coming close to the boy's. Looking back down Gamal extended his dark paw again, patting at the ground as a ghost of a smile threatened to tug at his lips. Had he learned hieroglyphs just so he could speak to him? The mere thought of that alone caused the smilodon's chest to fill with warmth as he took to writing out a response. A wonderful talent indeed. He took a moment to consider going with the group before offering a curt nod of his head and writing. Yes. Standing to his paws he looked in the general direction of the group.

  • "It's catch and release, not hunt and squish," he added to Morph and Wave's answers, narrowing his eyes at Battery in a good-humored scold. Booties safely secured on his paws, the hybrid would have stepped forward to slowly open the front door. He was eager to get started, but his head looked over his shoulder, just in time to see both Brandy's appearance and Morph's tracing. If that worked... Well, Dee was going to have to ask Morph to show him, sometime. It wasn't fair that there was a Cartelian so few people knew how to communicate with, and no matter how he tried to frame it in his mind, it had to be a lonely experience, not being able to tell what people were saying, nor see exactly what they were doing.

"You're always a pleasure to have around, Brandy- Of course you can," he smiled, understanding that it was likely just a habitual politeness to ask, but wanting to reassure her that it wasn't needed, regardless. With that, Dee stepped back, holding the door open for whoever decided to take the opportunity to step into the cool, fresh air that greeted his own lungs.

  • They all seemed about ready to get headed out, it was still a little early into the night but this still tended to be the best time to find the little bugs. By the time they got there, things would already be well underway anyways, so, it was time to round everyone up and get moving. Of course, before they could leave she did want to make sure she got an answer from Gamal, but it seemed like they would be getting another addition to this trip in the form of Brandy. It was hard to miss the Savannah, well, really it was hard to keep her eyes from being drawn towards her as she approached, that shade of pink would have been hard for anyone to not take notice of. "Yes, absolutely, I have more then enough jars for a couple dozen new additions in fact!" called out the feline in response, gesturing over towards the pile she had, still nice and neatly stacked into the cart she would be bringing along.

What was Morpheus doing right now anyways? It looked a bit like he was drawing symbols on the floor, but she had never really seen any kind of language like that, and Gamal....Gamal could understand those? That was a very interesting way of communicating, not one she had ever seen before either, but then again, she hadn't seen many who were deaf, not to mention mostly blind on top of that. Judging from the way that the smilodon had nodded and was looking to them now, she'd assume that he had decided to join, and, er, well, if he hadn't, then...he would just stay behind, right? "Alright, lets get moving everyone! Oh, oh thank you Dee!" It was very nice of him, to hold the door open like that for her, especially when she was the one maneuvering the cart out the door, watery limbs stretching out from her back to grab hold of the handle of the cart to pull it along behind her as she headed out the door, and began the trek off to the north.

It was a bit of a walk, getting where they needed to be, and once more she was thankful that her power actually allowed her to solidify water, to grab things with it, otherwise she wouldn't have been able to make it all this way while dragging that cart without a break or two. Lightly wooded, with a few spots of dense brush here and there, one of the rivers of the peninsula not far away, it was a nice little spot, and, hopefully, still full of fireflies after dark. "Here we are, alright, everyone come get a jar and lets get ready!" she called out, and when she turned her head, she could already see a few of those tell-tale flickers of light, not as many as she had seen yesterday, true, but it was still early, maybe more would come out in time?
