  • ➤➣➤ Owlpaw hadn't had the chance to speak much to Sunpaw since they became apprentices a quarter moon ago. Of course, those first few nights, Owlpaw had made his nest in the apprentices' den next to his brother's, just like always, but then came the announcement that Owlpaw would be studying under Pipitpetal and moving his nest to the medicine cats' den. He'd been thrilled by this opportunity, by the chance to learn how to heal, but his first night away from Sunpaw had been so hard, and not just because they'd never really slept apart before. He'd also been increasingly aware of his brother's despondence, first with Sinatra's disappearance--or Big Shadow, as Sunpaw called him--and then with Gladestar's death, the move, all of it. He worried for Sunpaw, wasn't used to seeing him without the vivacity and exuberance and mischief that normally characterized him. So one morning, when Pipitpetal excused him for a break from sorting and stockpiling herbs in the den, Owlpaw didn't ask twice before racing out of the den and looking for his brother.

"Sunpaw?" he called, poking his head in the apprentices' den after making a lap around camp. "Sunpaw are you in here? It's me, Owlpaw. I thought we could, ya know, catch up." I miss you, he added in his head. He hoped that his brother was around, otherwise he'd made himself look very silly by calling for someone who wasn't there.

  • It had only been a few moons since he and his brother had been made apprentices. Sunpaw was on his way to recovery, also known as denial. Little smiles here and a giggle there. Small sparks of excitement and a few playful gestures as he moved around camp, but then the absolute worst thing since his parents death happened. Owlpaw had been chosen to learn under Pipitpetal. Not that Sunpaw wasn't happy for his brother, but another person was ripped away from him. He always imagined they would grow up to train side by side and one day receive their warrior name's together. He was, of course, oblivious to Owlpaw's own feelings and instead withdrew once again into himself instead of talking with him. It was cold, the feeling of emptiness on his back as he slept, which wasn't much these past few days. Owlpaw's scent was already fading from the den and Sunpaw's heart yearned to race over to his cream colored brother and challenge him to a spar, or to compare their hunting crouches. But he always stopped himself and slipped back into the apprentices den.

Today was like any other. Sunpaw was curled up in his nest, steady breathing that he may have been asleep, which was not the case. The golden siamese just laid in his nest on the outskirts of the apprentices den, blue eyes staring blankly at the wall. It wasn't going to be much longer until they left their home. Sunpaw hadn't even bothered to make himself comfortable in his new den. What was the point? Lost in thought, Sunpaw hadn't heard his brother's first call. Not until his cream head had poked into the den. Blinking slowly he turned his head so he could see the tabby. "Ahhh, brother. Welcome to the apprentice den." His voice was raspy with misuse and cracked from all his sobbing. A loud sigh left the tom's muzzle as he rolled over to get a better view of the entrance of the den. "How is it training with Pipitpetal? We haven't had much time to talk since they chose you to be their apprentice. You're always so busy." Sunpaw forced a half smile to play on his muzzle as he watched the young tabby, refusing to get up from his position in his nest.

  • ➤➣➤ As the young boy entered the den he'd so briefly called home, he finally spotted the familiar bundle of fur that was Sunpaw laying on his side in his nest. A heartbeat of confusion filled Owlpaw with dread, but before he had time to process it, Sunpaw had moved and spoken. He was fine, nothing was wrong, they were both alive and present and not missing. He felt silly for panicking immediately, but he'd never really gotten over that feeling of the sudden and unexpected possibility of loss. He didn't think Sunpaw had either, but they'd never talked about it. Maybe they would never talk about it.

Before Owlpaw could say anything, Sunpaw's unusually raspy voice had asked him about his new training life. The boy sensed a hint of resentment in his brother's tone, or something like resentment, and concern flooded him all over again. This was not the carefree Sunpaw that he had grown up with. Patience, he cautioned himself. They would get there. "It's pretty good," he commented, padding over to his brother's side and flopping over in a vacant nest nearby. "It's been a little overwhelming, what with the move coming up and everything. I don't even know what half the stuff in the medicine cats' den is, but I have to pack it and prepare everything to be moved." He stopped for a moment, trying to gage his brother's expression out of the corner of his eye to see if it was okay that he was still talking.

"How's your training going?" he asked, turning his eyes more obviously back toward Sunpaw as he started picking at a loose piece of moss in the nest he occupied. "How's Foxcall as a mentor and everything? Have you learned anything cool?" Maybe, just maybe, he could convince Sunpaw to teach him some stuff about hunting and sparring so that when Owlpaw asked Gyrecall to keep training him he wouldn't look like a total idiot!
