  • The drive down to the ranger station is mostly silent, with the only one to speak being Winston. His question goes unanswered. Honestly Otto doesn't want to think about how this all happened. He doesn't want to think about any of this at all. So all he focuses his mind on is getting to the ranger station. A couple of minutes later, they reach the station. It's not a pretty sight at all.

The parking lot is littered with corpses and puddles of blood, empty of people or zombies but there's a couple empty cars parked. Otto swallows dryly, trying to ignore the wiggles of nausea that rises up from the gruesome sight. He pulls in as close to the door as he can and climbs out cautiously, every single nerve in high alert. He motions the other out and walks up to the door, unlocked and slightly ajar. Pushing it open reveals a massacre. The place is untouched save for three dead bodies, two camp rangers torn apart on the ground and a single zombie with half it's head blown off. So much for looking for help from the camp rangers.

Hoping to whatever deities exist that whatever killed these two rangers os long gone, Otto walks in and looks away from the bodies, "Well... Anyone have any other ideas?"

Vienna was silent the whole way to the station, sitting up front in the passengers seat with the other four plus their pets in the back. Wren sat quietly like a loaf in her lap. After seeing all the bodies and blood in the parking lot, Vi wasn't looking forward to going inside but she figured it was a lot safer inside than waiting in the car.

The brunette got out of the car, keeping half an eye on her brother while she followed Otto inside. She almost wished she had stayed in the car, "Guess we can look around a bit?" She suggested with a shrug. The station could have guns or something. Maybe they could find some useful things. Or she guessed they could just hop back in the car and leave the campground altogether.

She wasn't sure which she'd rather do.

  • Throughout the whole car ride, Ruby was silent and she didn’t even sign anything to Ev or Winston whilst she had her head hanging down and she was huddled with Shiloh and Cresswell. Her hands fidgeted with her phone, contemplating if she should reach out to her mother but ultimately decided against doing such a thing right now. Upon reaching the rangers station, Ruby scooped Shiloh up into her arms and put her in the messenger bag before sliding out of the car when the door was open. Of course, she was helping Cresswell get out of the car since she wanted to be close to him and she was met with a very unwelcome sight. The stench of death hung in the air with blood splashed onto the ground and corpses were sprawled out as well. Using her free hand, Ruby pinched her nose to block out the horrendous smell.

She was very meek and she followed the others inside only to be met with two dead rangers and a dead zombie. Maybe they should clear out the bodies which would make Ruby feel safer. Her hand lowered from her nose and she tugged on Ev’s sleeve before signing ‘We should clear out those bodies.’ to hum, hoping that he would agree with her. And maybe find some air freshener to get rid of the smell of death... hopefully. How long they would stay here, Ruby had no clue but this couldn’t be a permanent shelter. They would have to leave the campground eventually and maybe find their families hopefully alive and alright.

Ruby didn’t want to get her hopes too high and she stayed near Cress with her hand holding onto his. Were there any empty duffel bags laying around? They could collect needed supplies, stay here for a while and then be on their way. That sounded like a plan to her.

Ic: The silence is deafening the whole way to the ranger station. Now that the adrenaline is starting to wear off, Cresswell begins to shiver and fidget nervously. Charlie senses his nervousness and sits up, laying her head on his knees. A vibrating hand settles on her head and Cresswell's fingers gently run through her fur. The familiar texture of her wavy fur comforts him.

The car finally stops vibrating and goes silent, so he assumes they're at the ranger station now. Car doors are opening and closing as everyone gets out, and Cress grabs onto Charlie's harness. She and Ruby help him get out without stumbling and falling, automatically reaching for Ruby's hand with his free one. The two follow the others into the station, the overpowering stench of blood and death clogging his nose with the nauseating smell.

He releases Charlie's harness and lays a hand on her head fondly, "Charlie, search," He tells her. The lab mix wags her tail and lopes off quietly to go check out every nook and cranny and room she can access for danger or anything she should alert Cresswell and the group about. Cress himself sticks close to Ruby and doesn't dare to let go of her hand. Her presence is somehow reassuring and makes him feel secure.

Winston should’ve expected that his question of how all of this happened exactly would go unanswered. The rest of the car ride was silent except for the noises of the zombies feasting outside. He just hugged onto Luna and he looked at Ev and he used his free hand to hold hands with him. Refusing to let go of the other’s hand and he was anxiously awaiting for them to finally arrive at the rangers station, expecting to find the rangers alive and well. But his eyes were met with a whole different sight that was nausea inducing and he felt his stomach churn with nervousness. Blood was pooled onto the ground and corpses were sprawled out all over. When the car door was opened, the smell of death hit him right in the face and made him gag. He set Luna on the ground so he could cover his nose with his hand and even though he was covering up his nose, Winston could still smell traces of nauseating death.

The brunette hurried inside only to be met with a blood bath. The rangers were dead and there was a dead zombie on the ground as well. Oh, really? The air was contaminated with the smell of the carbon dioxide being emitted from the corpses and he wanted to retch and vomit. Luna padded around and Winston let go of Ev’s hand so he could go into a room that didn’t smell awful. He staggered into one of the other rooms where it was presumed the guns were kept. Only then did he manage to get a heavy breath of clean air that wasn’t contaminated. That awful smell had made him feel so nauseated and was giving him a small headache. His head had began to throb and he had to sit down. Winston just had to.

Well, they were safe in here and there were weapons. The rangers were dead so there was no hope of getting help. It made his chest hurt with anxiety. Luna nosed around, poking around at things. Winston rubbed his head before opening up his backpack and he searched for the pain pills that he kept in the bag.

Ev tries and ultimately fails to muster up something to say to them all, to comfort his friends after the horror they just saw and clearly worrying about their families. He gives up halfway through the beginning of some random encouraging quote and simply settles for sitting in silence, holding Winston's hands limply but holding it all the same. At least he tried. The rest of the drive to the station is completely silent.

Evengaline barely pays attention to the parking lot they pull up in, only registering the nauseating smell of corpses and blood as he opens the door and hops out. He's still holding Winston's hand like it's his only lifeline, casting a watchful glance over his shoulder at Ruby helping Cresswell out of the car. He only relaxes when everyone is inside. Only to tense up all over again at the state of the ranger station. He obligingly drops Winston's hand when the other boy pulls away to presumably take a moment alone with his dog.

A tug at his sleeve prompts his dark green gaze to flick down to Ruby, then to her hands as she signs to him, 'Good idea,' He signs back, trying for a horribly timed joke, 'Really smells in here, somebody should have opened a window.' He then looks to the others in the room with him, "Looking around can't hurt. We should move the dead bodies outside though," He agrees, his hands on the move to automatically sign everything he says as he usually does and already jogging over to one of the dead rangers. He's never been squeamish or one to back down from repulsive tasks, he never hesitates to get his hands dirty to help out. So he has no problem with grabbing the body under the shoulders and casually dragging it towards the door, his broad frame and natural strength making the task rather easy for the boy.

  • Otto listens to everyone's suggestions in turn to reach a decision about what he, individually, should do right about now. Vienna and Ev agree about looking around, with Cress sending his dog to search around and Winston already going into another room. The boy spots Ruby signing and, while he can't read ASL himself, Evengaline quickly translates.

Moving the dead, or at least supposedly dead, bodies out of the station entirely sounds like a reasonable idea. Especially given corpses now have the tendency to get up and try to eat you. He's not a very strong individual, focusing more on speed and stealth capabilities, but he leaps to help Ev move the other two bodies out of the building.

"I guess we'll search around then. Wouldn't hurt to chill here for a bit," He mumbles to the others as he pulls the second ranger with an effort towards the door. Apart from the main office they stand in, the station has two other rooms. There's the room that Winston went into, which he would guess is where they keep their emergency guns and stuff. Then there's another room, supposedly the little break or lounging area, the lights inside flicker fitfully as if they're about to go out. Ev will have to be careful about that, he reckons, "Can someone scope out the lounge?"

    ShatteredDimensions wrote:

Only a couple seconds away from hurling up the absolute nothing in her stomach, Vienna swung her duffel off her shoulder and rifled through it for her colorful case of hygienic items. She produced a bottle of perfume, strawberry scented, and walked around just casually spraying it over the whole room in small doses. It wouldn't help get rid of the smell but it would definitely make it more tolerable.

Finished with that, she put away the perfume and faced the flickering lounge room. Seeing as how most of everyone seemed busy, and Ev probably shouldn't be going into a room with flickering lights with his epilepsy, Vi took it upon herself to go check out the lounge, "I got the lounge." Using her phone as a flashlight since the flickering lights of the room didn't give too much to work with, Vienna went into the lounge.

It didn't look like there was much to be worried about or anything that would prove immediately dangerous, so she went about checking every single place the lounge had. Usually there would be little snacks or coffee beans sitting about. And good God she could use a cup of coffee right about now. She opened another cupboard. Jackpot!

"Fuck yeah, guys there's coffee in here!" She yelled out, perhaps forgetting inside voices were probably important when zombies were walking around outside.

Winston remained where he was, not planning to get up until the headache went away. After he felt a little better, Winston got up and he went over to the huge glass case where the rifles were kept. Of course, it was locked and needed a key to open it up. There was the option of breaking the glass open and just take the rifles but that would create noise which wasn't needed right now. Those zombies might be attracted to noise so Winston was going to have to find the key. "There's a huge glass case in here that has rifles but it's locked. Try searching for a key!" Winston called out to anyone really before rummaging through a desk to see if there was a key to the case. Winston had no luck so he ran a hand through his disheveled hair and sighed.

They needed those rifles if they were going to have more weapons with them. Oh well, might as well search for a duffel bag to put the rifles in if they did get to unlock the case. Wait... wouldn't a ranger have the key on them? That was a possibility but he didn't want to risk it because what if the rangers came back whilst their corpses were being searched for a mere key? Winston shook his head and focused on looking for a duffel bag for the time being.

Winston shuffled over to the window and peeked out the curtain and through the blinds to see if any zombies were around outside. Okay there were a few out there but they were just... hanging around. He took a step back and pulled out his phone to see if he could try and reach his mother via texting once again. Why she wasn't answering was something that was eating at him.

  • Ruby gave Ev a weird look when he signed a very poorly timed joke before signing ‘Really’ to him and that was the end of their little sign conversation. But yeah, it did smell in here because of the carbon dioxide fumes coming from the bodies. That was until Vienna went around spraying perfume to make the smell more tolerable and it did... the air was still contaminated with the bad smell by the perfume mixed in it made it more bearable. Ruby was tempted to continue with holding onto Cresswell’s hand but her grip was starting to loosen up as she wanted to search around and see if there was anything useful that could be found. Besides, they were safe in this station so nothing could harm them as long as the windows and doors were secured tightly and firmly. The deaf girl went to look around the main office which is where they were at the moment.

She went to the large desk and started poking around in the drawers, finding various things. Paper, pencils, reports, junk basically and... food. Food in the main desk? It was only a few crunchy granola bars but it was better then nothing. Ruby was hit by the fact that they hadn’t eaten any breakfast because they had awoke to the zombie apocalypse happening. She set the wrapped up bars on the desk and went back to rummaging. There wasn’t anything of much use but she did find a small flare gun that they could possibly use. Well, with that done she took what she found that appeared to be orb use and held it in her hands so she could inspect them more.

How long they would stay here was something beyond Ruby’s knowledge. Maybe this could be temporary shelter and they could sleep in here. Yeah they could stay here for a while... maybe spend a night here and try to find their families in the morning. Ruby was desperate to know if her mother was still alive or not.

Ic: Cresswell is more than content to stick close to Ruby and the others for obvious reasons, but it doesn't sit well with the boy that he's standing around doing nothing while the others are making themselves useful. Sightless he may be, but useless he is not. Slipping his hand from Ruby's after a brief squeeze to let her know he's going to be doing his own thing, he casts his gaze around as if searching for something to do. Blind eyes take in the differences in lighting and nothing else, though it's enough to help him estimate where he's at in the building.

Cress wanders off into the backroom with the weapon cases, automatically reaching a hand out to trail his fingers along the wall for guidance, "Can I help?" He asks Winston upon realizing the brunette is also in the backroom. He hears Vienna calling out from the lounge about coffee and he can't suppress the little giggle he gives His sister does love her coffee. And admittedly he could go for a cup of coffee too. It's at that moment he realizes none of them have eaten breakfast this morning.

As if sensing this train of thought, Charlie pads into the lounge with Vienna to search around for anything she should alert the others about. Having been trained for search and retrieve purposes among other things, she has no issue with grabbing the knobs of the lower cupboards with her teeth and pulling them open to search them, and her search yields an opened box full of still wrapped snack bars. Wagging her tail at her findings, the lab mix pushes the box out with her nose and spills the bars onto the floor. Charlie grabs several of them delicately in her mouth and trots off to each individual person to offer them snack bars.

Cresswell definitely appreciates the gesture, sweeping his gaze down at the dog nudging his hand; her signal that she has something for him to take. Taking the snack bar from her teeth, Cress unwraps it and smiles gently, "Good girl, Charlie," He praises, petting her behind the ears before she trots off again.

  • Pulling the bodies out of the ranger station is a little harder for Otto than it is for Ev, though the task is made a bit easier with how eviscerated the bodies are. As morbid as it is, the fact that the dead rangers are torn up makes the bodies lighter than they would have been if they weren't. A quick search of the one ranger he's pulling, promoted by Winston calling out about a key to some rifles, yields nothing but a few empty flare gun shells, "No key on this one."

As he's walking back in, Cresswell's dog pads up to him with what looks to be some type of candy bar or something. He takes it from her with a thankful pat on the head, quickly tearing it open to practically inhale the little snack. His empty stomach accepts it thankfully and Otto jogs to start dragging the dead zombie with half it's head blown off out the door.

It doesn't take Evengaline very long to haul the corpse out the door while Lirim sniffs around the main office, quickly skimming through the pockets of the dead ranger when Winston calls out about a locked case with rifles in them. Otto doesn't find any keys on the other body but Ev's quick search proves fruitful because he pulls a ring of keys from the ranger's pocket. He strides back to the door swiftly, only to be stopped by Charlie.

In Ev's humble opinion, Cresswell's dog has no business being this adorable. The labrador mix comes trotting up to him at the door all wagging tail and puppy eyes, bringing him and likely the other kids a couple snack bars because they had to skip breakfast. It's enough to make Evengaline's heart melt as he accepts the snack from Charlie gratefully. He can't help but ruffle her flopped ears with one hand, devouring the snack bar with the other, "Good girl."

He steps by the dog and casts a quick look around at the others doing their own things, Vienna shouting about coffee from the lounge. It'll be a cold day in hell before he walks into the flickering lights of the room but oh man does he want some coffee, "If there's a coffee pot back there to brew some, I might actually cry," He calls back teasingly. He turns away and walks into the backroom where Cress and Winnie are. He leans in with a cheeky grin, dangling the ring of keys from a single finger, "Look what I found."

Winston was hoping that keys would be found to the rifle case. They did need the rifles after all if they wanted to have the utmost protection and lots of weapons to defend themselves against the zombies. He was looking for boxes of spare ammo when he heard Cresswell enter the room and speak to him. The brunette straightened his posture, remaining silent for a bit as he pondered on what Cress could do to help out. Well, there might have been things that Winston had overlooked now right? He had been in a hurry to find keys after all. Now, Cress was blind obviously but he could always feel around for stuff. "Okay, yeah you can help. Just... stay by the desk and feel around for anything that might be useful... like ammo." Winston said and he gently ushered Cresswell over to the desk so that the younger male wouldn't bump into anything. If he had a bobby pin then he could hurriedly pick at the lock and have access to the guns.

But he was busying himself with looking for spare ammo when he heard Ev's voice which prompted him to turn around he managed a smile when he saw that Ev had found the keys to the rifle case. Straightening his posture once more, the brunette walked over to Ev and casually took the keys. "Oh, thank you." Winston crooned slightly to Ev with a grin and he walked back over to the case, fiddling around with the keys before unlocking the lock and he was able to open up the rifle case. "Looks like we're in luck. We just need a duffel bag to put all of these rifles in." Winston commented as he felt proud that they were able to get ahold of these rifles.

  • I don't really care

    If nobody else believes

"Better start crying, Ev!" Vienna yelled back. Because yes, there was a coffee Brewer just begging to be used. Unfortunately she couldn't find any mugs but she did have a thermos. She wouldn't mind sharing with Evengaline (or anyone else really). He was a pretty cool guy, kinda odd if you didn't know him very well, and the way he treated his obvious crush, Winston, was frankly very sweet. It was a damn shame that it would be the apocalypse that would push her to get to know everyone else better than she ever would have in a normal lifestyle.

Vi grabbed what little she could find, including the precious tin of coffee grinds, and walked out of the lounge. But not before unplugging and carrying the coffee brewer out of the lounge and setting it on the edge of the main office desk. If she could find an outlet outside the lounge, because honestly she would feel like a dick for keeping the coffee in a room that not everyone could safely access, she was definitely making some coffee right here right now. And possibly making Evengaline carry the coffee brewer in his, quite frankly large as hell, hiking backpack.

The brunette slid her gym duffel off one arm and deposited it on the floor at the center of the room upon overhearing about the rifles, "If we can't find anything to carry the rifles in, you can just stuff em in mine until we do. There might be enough room in there for like, one or two," She offered as she wandered elsewhere to look for anything else of use, "How many rifles are there?"

It's clear Vi was thinking about the long-term of... Whatever was happening. She obviously wasn't expecting things to be normal outside of the campgrounds.

While Vi was doing her thing, Wren was padding around everyone's feet curiously. Eventually tiring of almost getting stepped on, the sphynx cat bounded over to the main office desk by Ruby and leaped up onto it. The hairless cat meowed curiously and promptly padded across the desk, entirely heedless of anything he bumped or stepped on.

    Cause I've still got

A lotta fight left in me

  • Ruby has been casually crunching on one of the crunchy granola bars that she had found and she didn’t exactly hear Wren meow and get up onto the desk beside her. So naturally she didn’t know that there was a hairless cat being so heedless of everything that he bumped into or stepped on. And so Ruby just stood there eating the crunchy granola bar to get something into her stomach. When she was done, Ruby stuffed the wrapper into her pants pocket for now and when she turned her head, she finally saw what Wren was doing. Upon seeing this. Ruby let out an almost silent squeak and she reached to gently grab a hold of a Wren before he knock anything breakables off. Couldn’t risk it.

Zombies seemed to be attracted to loud noises so they had to be quiet. When Ruby gently grabbed a hold of Wren, she was being gentle and careful. Giving the hairless cat a few affectionate pets, she continued to hold Wren in her arms for a little while longer until she was heading into the lounge area and there she set Wren down on the ground, giving his head a gentle pat. Ruby was going to stay in the lounge for a little while and despite not knowing how long they were going to be here, she was going to sit down and give her eyes a rest.

Slumping down into a comfortable spot, Ruby had her knees brought up to her chest and she was able to rest her chin on her knees and she was just focused on getting comfortable. She’s already found some useful things so just why not get a small rest? It was just small eye rest for her that’s all. Sleep had been interrupted by zombies invading the camp after all. However, Ruby doubted she would ever be able to get good rest ever again now.

    Oc:

Ic: Cresswell remains patient and quiet as Winston thinks about what he can do to help. It isn't uncommon for the blind kid to ask what he can do to help out and try to pull his own weight. He's well aware of how reliant he is on others and how that will likely impact the current situation. It doesn't take eyesight to figure that most people don't appreciate having someone that's too dependent when it comes to survival situations. He's pretty sure none of his friends are like that. Hopefully.

Nonetheless he perks at the task given to him and wanders towards the desk Winston nudges him to, one hand slightly reaching to brush the surface of the desk, "Thanks for letting me help," He murmurs distractedly. One might think a perceptive blind person is simply inconceivable but Cresswell readily proves those kinds of people wrong. Fingers trace the corners of the desk and feel the lines of the wood until he hits a protruding edge that can only be a desk drawer. The boy grins lightly.

He opens the drawer, a few things clattering inside of the disturbance. Cress easily distinguishes a couple pens and a notepad, and... A box seemingly made of cardboard it something by the feel. He picks it up delicately and rattles it gently. The tune of metal hitting metal rings clearly. No braille inscriptions but he knows what's in the box already. It's in a room full of guns for crying out loud, what else could it logically be, "Bullets. I obviously don't know what kind, but bullets," He says to whoever may listen and care about the find and then goes back to investigating the desk and the area around it.

What a conveniently timed find since Winston acquired the keys to the rifles, courtesy of Ev bringing him the keys. Cress feels a lot safer knowing they have actual weapons on hand.
