✦ - Nettlekit’s head snapped up from an evening nap. His eyes shot open, distant coughing echoing in his ears. Whatever crazy dream he might’ve been having, he had no clue what it could’ve been about. And the coughs continued at an alarming rate. He got up from his spot besides the medicine cat den and peeked into the small cavern. An NPC was laying in the front, coughing up red liquid hoarsely, gasping for breath. The kit’s eyes widened, ears flattening against his skull. He couldn’t help but stand there and watch, fur bristling, as the cat kept convulsing and finally stopped, relieved from its suffering.
The kit stepped back in horror, and turned around to run into the safety of the nursery. Death, he didn’t want to feel it, smell it, know it’s there at his neck chasing him. He didn’t want to focus on the fact that one day it would catch him too. He breathed heavily, curling up into a small ball in his nest. He knew that medicine cats had to deal with that- but Spiderpaw was injured and Owlgaze had his paws full, how would they ever be able to take care of all of the clan now if leafbare? Oakridge was injured, Briarheart was injured, that scary big white guy as well?
His mind was filling up with the information at an alarming rate and despite sunsteps already passing by, he couldn’t sleep even when everything has gone quiet, knowing that cat was gone, and that many others would be if something didn’t change. He has been observing the herbs the last few days, as he did anytime he had time, fox-dung he’s been obsessed with learning them ever since he came, and he was startled by the shortening storage. What if Briarheart got sick? What if Lilykit got sick? Anyone else he knew? Blossomkit? Smolderingpaw? He couldn’t sleep, he couldn’t rest knowing they were in such danger. He couldn’t lose someone else now, he couldn’t let it happen. He had to do something.
A few sunsteps after the night swallowed everything in darkness, the mute tom sticked his head out and quietly walked over to Blossomkit laying just besides him. He grabbed her by a tuft of fur, attempting to shake her, and without waiting for a response jumped over to his mottled friend to try and do the same. They had to do something. He glanced around at the both of them and quickly pointed his tail at the entrance. He sure hoped they would understand they had to be about as quiet as he was.
