The harsh rocking of the boat had been the only thing to keep Constantine from sleeping through this trip, jerking him about in his cabin where he had been trying to nap in the small cot. By ways of boats went, this wasn't the best one, but it had been what her 'highness' had wanted, at least that was what he was calling her. Lara Croft. Frankly he hadn't been expecting to ever receive a call, let alone an invitation, from the elusive woman. All he knew about her had been from either his mentor, Roth, or from the file that his government kept on her. Even that file was minimal. She was an heiress to a family fortune that would put the Queen of England to shame and he knew that she traveled a lot, that was it. So when she called him up looking for a soldier that could speak the language, knew the territory, and could keep himself alive, he had been left questioning why he had even agreed to this trip. Yeah, he could do all of those things, but why did this very visibly capable woman need a wing man? He was going to be needling away at her until he found out, but for the time being he was content to let it be, at least he had been offered the job. The man had yet to even figure out what exactly she was doing on her way to the northern most part of Europe. All she had told him in their initial introductions had been that she was looking for an artifact somewhere in Norway and needed assistance with the locals.

Tino could guess he just missed being out doing something, anything, besides sitting around at home and trying to act like everything was okay. Maybe that's why he had agreed to this crazy little scheme of hers. Part of him didn't believe for a minute that this was just over an artifact. He was a states boy born and raised, Colorado to be exact, but his dad was from Denmark and had raised him up on the local languages of the area. How Miss Lara Croft knew that, he had yet to figure out. It wasn't in his file anywhere, mainly because he kept that information to himself when he had been enlisted into the marines in hopes of avoiding ever being sent to the place. But, here he was, an ex marine turned mercenary on a boat heading for the one place he never wanted to revisit for the rest of his life.

The info had come to her quite suddenly, to be frank, but as soon as she had received it, she knew that her next destination in her crazy life was Denmark. The tales of the Norse gods were common knowledge enough to her but she lacked the connection to it as a Danish person did. That's why one Constantine was coming along with her instead of her usual partner, Jonah..She snickered ever so faintly, off in the Bahamas on his honeymoon. She was happy for him, he deserved the break after all she had put him through but there was still the feeling of loneliness of not having his calmness by her side. Instead it was replaced with a man that she truly did not know besides what the report had said. Fluent in Danish and it's history, he was quite a useful assistant but..she didn't know if she could trust him. But currently she had no choice, and no way out as the boat swayed this way and that. Her coat clung tightly to her muscular frame as she stared at the tumultuous sea, it was upset about something, but what she didn't know. Maybe Thor was shaking his fist at the world again, she smiled slightly to herself before letting out a slow breath from angular lips.

It was cold, her white breath proof enough of it, she stuck a hand into a pocket of the coat, pulling out her journal, reading through her scribbled notes for refreshing details. An artifact eluded to be one of the greatest weapons ever created, only held by Thor throughout it's existence. She knew there would be a tomb to be explored, just a matter of where. The general location was easy enough to find but her mind was stuck on the next piece of the puzzle. Exactly where. She glanced up to the sea again, there would be some time before they arrived on the dock so she decided to return below deck to the bunks. The creaking of wood was rhythmic as she went across the deck and down below, heading to the bunks. Lara needed to ensure her pack was ready for their departure.

  • The Marine had busied himself below deck, perched on the floor with his back to the wall and his left side against the railings of the cots. Being on the ground kept him somewhat in place as the boat rocked back and forth and it allowed him to prop his knee up to use as a steady surface for his journal. Constantine was scribbling away in his book when he heard Lara approach, raising forrest green eyes to look her over when she got close. Looked okay enough, so she wasn't escaping someone above, maybe the cold? He couldn't help but to notice the slight blue tinge of her lips and the bite of red in her cheeks. Denmark was bitterly cold this time of year and the further north they ventured the colder it would get. From her file he had seen she had been to much colder environments than this, didn't mean he wasn't any less concerned about the young woman freezing to death.

"At least you're smarter than most women and bundled up. Some i've met don't think that far ahead" he rumbled, wincing at his own tone and realizing how condescending it sounded almost as soon as he had said it. "Sorry, didn't mean it to sound like that. You're obviously a very capable woman... kinda makes a guy wonder why you need him around?" he inquired almost hopefully at that last part, wanting some kind of answer as to what she was up to. Why he was rambling away at just the sight of her was easy for him to deduce, but it still made him out to be the talkative type, which was quite the opposite in most cases. But right now he wanted answers, and this was the perfect opportunity to fish for them when they both were attempting to keep warm and avoiding being up on the deck. Shortly they'd arrive at the dock, and from there he'd have no idea where she was heading to, part of him wondered if she knew where they were going even.

"I'm not offended. In this line of work, it is always beneficial to think five steps ahead..even six if you know what you're going up against..and in this case I need you around because I am not sure of what..exactly I am facing against. I have enough information but I need a native's eyes. Which is why you are here," Lara understood why he wished for answers, he had been given only the smallest amount of instructions and details of why they were heading to Denmark. She needed him that way though, she couldn't risk it..she didn't quite trust him yet like she did Jonah. Despite her usual honestly, a certain amount of secrecy was needed for this mission.

She paused before looking to him with a smile as she sat upon a slightly swaying cot.
"And don't worry about being condescending, it's nothing I haven't handled before," she bent at the waist to carefully retie her boots. She should retrieve her pack from the trunks but she couldn't find it in herself to move from her spot as the cold seeped through her thick coat..so she instead decided to do some digging. She cleared her throat, busying herself with her next boot just to keep her hands from going completely numb.
"So, Constantine..tell me about yourself, where did your expertise of Denmark come from?"

  • This was an honest woman, something that Constantine found he liked about her even more. Even if she wasn't telling him the whole story, she was giving him something. Her comment on the condescension made him wince, he rubbing at the back of his neck out of nervous habit "ah yeah... sorry about that. Didn't mean for it to come out like that honestly." It just happened that she made him feel nervous about his capabilities, but no way was he going to admit that out loud. As she took a seat in the swaying cot he took note of how she moved, fluid but precise, ready to jump at a moments notice. This was the stance of a trained explorer, fighter, and even killer. Almost made him want to actually ask about what has happened to her, but prying would cause her to close up, or so he feared. Just like that she was asking him about himself and the same could have been said. "Oh, ah, well my da is from Denmark. When I was in my teens I spent a lot of time there in the winters with him, visiting family and such. I got to know the language and the area pretty well, especially when local boys liked to make friends and go hunting. I can't say i'm an expert, but the old tombs there are a boys playground."

His apology sounded sincere, Lara had no reason to disbelieve Constantine, nor did he have any reason to insult her. None that she knew of at least, he had been honest man for the time that they had been together on the ship. So she smiled "There is nothing to apologize for, there was no harm done."

Truly there wasn't, worse insults had been sent her way before, with more menace then she herself could throw upon anyone else, it just wasn't part of who she was. That was besides the point at this time though, as he began to tell her how exactly he had amassed his knowledge of the Danish culture. His father was a native, good..maybe he'd have some connections that they can use. Yet the most pertinent info was the mentioning of the old tombs. "Do many of them still go into the tombs?" if he had some previous experiences within these tombs she was searching for, maybe it would improve their chances of not running into any unwanted visitors. Even if they were boys going where they weren't supposed to...she'd rather keep attention away from the public.

Who knew who could be listening. A subconscious urge made her look over her shoulder in caution, they were alone in the gallows.

  • ~~~

β€œMaybe, maybe not. It’s been some time since I was last there, but people change, adapt. Likely the local kids sneak off there, but by now those tombs would be closed off from the public.” It was true, even when he was a boy the local didn’t like the kids to go anywhere near the tombs. Something about curses and jagged rocks, but he remembered loving them. Finding new little corners he had not the day before, getting lost and having to find his way back out again. His father had joked it was the explorer in him, now he wondered if there had really been more to it. With a grin he looked from his book over to the woman β€œIf you’re interested in them, I’m sure a few of the boys would love to lead us to one of the tombs. The locals aren’t as stand offish as you’d be led to believe, quite friendly actually. Don’t be surprised if we’re of-β€œ

β€œOi! They’re getting too close! Brace for impact!”

No sooner had Tino heard the yell from above deck than he was crashing onto his side at the impact of the ship against whatever the men had seen above. How in the hells had they not seen that until now?! There was no way it could have been that sudden! Getting back on his feet, he checked Lara for a brief moment then head towards the door. Peaking his head out, he began to hear the sound of gunfire just above their heads. Alarm rang to the surface, he quickly shutting and locking the door. β€œDon’t suppose you were expecting company?” It came out more as growl than a question, hands grabbing at his pack and bringing out his pistol. There were shouts up above being followed by sprays of bullets. Whoever the hell it was, they weren’t meting out any mercy. What he could hear beneath the surface was the gush of water flowing into the hull. Shit! Already his mind was racing with what they should do, every exit available to them, the possibilities endless and all narrowing at once as the gunfire drew closer.

Constantine's explanation was fitting, children often found themselves in places where they shouldnt be, all for the sake of curiousity. That's definitely what happened to her. But before she could explain the similarities in her own childhood- the voice of the seaman above them sounded out. Someone was getting too close? Her body was sent flying into the pole holding the hammock up, her mind struggling to catch up with what exactly had happened to them. Searing pain went up her spine, blowing the breath from her lungs for a few moments until Constantine's voice pulled her back. She could hear the gunfire above them, her body jumped into action. she grabbed her own pack, pulling free the small pistol that she always kept with her, alongside her climbing hooks and a bit of rope. She tossed the bag over her shoulder as she responded to Constantine "Expected! But..not welcomed!"

It was Trinity. Who else could it be, but she truly didn't understand how they had found her! She had covered her tracks..hadn't she? She didn't have time to doubt her previous decisions, so all she snapped was "We need to get out of here..there should be another exit this way-!" her feet carried her before she could finish her thought, carrying her further into the hull. They didn't have time, they needed to get out before the hulll was completely under water.

  • ~~~

"Lead the way Lady Croft." Tino muttered under his breath as the woman was off, not even bothering to finish what she was about to say. It didn't matter, they both knew the stakes here. Be quiet and get out... or die. Like hell he was going to take the ladder option. As he followed behind her, he kept checking over his shoulder to see if they were being followed. The gunfire was almost constant, only slowing in rhythm when the bullets would run out, followed up by that steady beat once more. It was horrifying to think about, he knowing that many of the people on board were merely boys or old seamen. None of them had asked for this, so who the hell were these guys? Anger was splitting at his head, but he kept it leveled for the woman in front of him. She had hired him for a job, but not only that, she was precious to one of the most courageous men he had ever met. He'd be damned if he let anything happen to the one thing left of his mentor.

As they drew further into the hull, the sound of rushing water was growing louder, and the sound of gunfire was slowing. Shit, it wouldn't be long before these guys were on them. "Hope you got a plan." he rumbled out in a low voice, making sure it wasn't too loud to draw attention. Keeping from firing their weapons and staying as quiet as possible would be the difference between life and death in this situation. And oh how he had been in these kinds of situations before. That's why she hired him, not just for his knowledge of the island, but because he could handle himself. But dammit if he didn't know a whole lot about her own capabilities. Only the weapons she carried and the file he had gotten on her was what could speak to that testament. It was good enough for him. She wasn't some spoiled rich girl that would cry at the sight of a firearm. No, she was capable and well known to these situations.

She had to find a way out of here. Her skin was prickling with the sounds of the gunfire, her gut twisting in uncomfortable knots but she did not panic. No, she did not panic. The unease that settled in her gut came from the conscious effort to keep herself calm. She had gone through many fire fights before, she had gotten scars that would never heal right, only adding to the total that she had. The sounds were rhythmic, much like the pounding of her own heart as she thought of their potential escape routes. The deeper they went into the boat, the more helpless she felt. They could likely escape through one of the portholes- his voice called to her from behind them.

"I have a plan-! Always have one.." she shouted back to him, but the unhopeful side of her immediately mumbled Most of the time. She couldn't lose now that they had just started. The boat was sinking, that meant there was a hole- a sudden ram into the side of the boat sent the adventurer and her companion straight into the nearest wall, a sharp yell leaving her as she struggled to regain her breathe and her footing as her world spun. Icy coldness immediately greeted her legs as the water of the sea seeped through the hole that gaped to their side. "This way-!" she sprinted towards it, sliding to a stop just before she exited through the jagged broken piece of the ship's hull. The sea was violent and tumultuous beneath them, but it was the only way out.

  • ~~~

"Shit!" Tino couldn't help but to hiss at the rush of cold water at his calves, it stinging at the skin through the thin fabric of his pants. He had not prepared for this scenario and it was definitely showing. But she had a plan, and he could get behind it as his gaze followed her. Just as they started down the hall, he was met with a force to his left, knocking them both into the other wall. Were these fuckers driving further into the boat?! These monsters would drown them all! Getting back on his feet and shaking the dizziness from his head, his eyes snapped back to Croft. She was heading for the rip in the hull, gushing with water and filling up rather quickly. Within moments they'd be under water. Which is why she dove right into the icy ocean on the other side of the tear. Great, if they didn't drown then the frigid waters would freeze them to death. Strapping the rifle over his back he rushed forward, diving down into the waters and maneuvering his body through the water practically sucking him through it. The other ship had been forced to pull back and so they were safe from it, but a quick look to the rotors and he could see they were making to hit the boat at least one more time. Realizing this, he swam up to Laura, holding a hand on her shoulder as he signaled with the other towards the rotors. Hopefully she would understand as he tried to pull her as far to the left as they could. If they didn't move, they'd get sucked further in by the currents moving in towards the other ship. Every survival instinct in him was screaming, screaming that they needed to get away and that they needed to get out of the water. But shore was at least another mile away, if not further. One problem at a time Tino. Get the hell out of this ships way, then worry about getting to shore. He berated himself even as his body moved on its own, kicking out at the water with every ounce of his being. Eventually they'd have to go up for air, they could only hold on for so long.

Her muscles screamed as they breached the freezing cold waters below, almost stiffening to the point that she could not move them from their frozen state. Yet despite the pain, Croft pushed through it, kicking her legs to keep herself from sinking into the depths of the dark ocean beneath them. Then a pressure touched her shoulder, she quickly looked over to the man besides her. He was gesturing to the rotor that was coming for them and then to the left of it. They needed to get out of the way, and quickly.

With a quick nod, she followed his gesture, kickign with all her might to get out fo the way. They needed to quickly make it to shore before they froze to death in this water...but from what she knew of the boat's timeline..they had about a mile or more to get to the shore. The strain in her lungs was becoming painful, squeezing her heart in a vice grip as she began to kick her way to the surface.

  • ~~~

They were wasting energy they couldn't afford to lose, but it was worth it if they could avoid the suction of the rotors. Kicking out as hard as he could, Tino was trying his best to push them both to the surface as quickly as humanly possible. His lungs were screaming and his chest felt like hot knives were stabbing him from within, knowing he had not taken as deep of a breath as he had needed. Just as he was feeling like he'd break under the pain of it, they broke the surface and he gasped loudly as he sucked in air. "Fuck!" he coughed out, the adrenaline of the situation still surging through his system and he couldn't quite control his inner feelings and outer appearance of such in that moment. Whatever, he was happy to be breathing. As he looked behind them, he could see the ship was far enough away that he could gauge they were safe from the threat, but his training also said he could never be sure of that. "Laura, we need to get to shore and we need to stay out of sight. But from what I'm seeing and feeling, we might freeze to death if we try to do the ladder. Got any ideas?" Already he could feel the cold of the water seeping into his bones and making him feel heavy, even as he moved, he couldn't get enough friction to fight it off. Blue eyes were constantly flicking to the shore ahead of them, looking so far away and yet so close, and back to the ships where they had escaped from. The boat they had been on was mostly below the surface now, just a thin strip of the siding left to be seen before it'd disappear completely in moments.
