  • Sometimes, it was easy to pretend that life was going great. For Carrotkit, one of those times would be when his fur was matted with dirt and his limbs loose from wild exercise, an earthworm wriggling limply beneath one paw. His eyes sparkled, mischief and excitement chasing away any insecurities that may have lingered in his deep blue eyes, pure, childish joy written across his face. "I found an earthworm!" His voice was high and bright, strong enough to fill the cavern. Spearing the worm with a claw and dangling it up for all to see, he asked, "Are earthworms eat-able?" If so, they could be counted as real prey, and he could easily boast that he'd caught real prey way before he became an apprentice. If rumors were to spread about him, he thought they should be impressive, and this was a suitable start.

  • Patchhowl limped up. "Well, if the camp is well fed, then no. If there's a great famine, however, we will resort to eating those so we don't die." The calico tom sniffed the worm. "Nonetheless, great catch! I can see you already have the heart of a Warrior!"

  • For a long time, Desdemona liked to pretend that many things were okay when truly, nothing had been going well in her life. Everyone in her family had passed, and while for some such an event would have broken them down into pieces, Desdemona ran from her home a stronger cat because of it. She was a new cat in a new experience, and damn her if she would squander it away from the sadness of her past. As such, the windswept Abyssinian approached the kitten with mirth glittering in her eyes, the green rolling grasses reflected in her gaze. "Well, even if you do eat it, it probably wouldn't taste very good," remarked the wild-furred she-cat with a small guffaw.

  • "Really?" A delighted smile crept over Carrotkit's maw as he stared at Patchhowl. "Should I put it on the freshkill pile? What's a famine, anyway?" He had no idea is WindClan was currently experiencing a "famine," although his guess would be that they weren't, considering that the freshkill pile wasn't full of earthworms. Still, he was proud of the fact that he'd caught something his clanmates could resort to eating, should the need arise.

He blinked softly at Desdemona, trying to puzzle out why she seemed so amused. Did she think he was a bad hunter, perhaps? "I dare you to eat it!" he challenged, nudging the tiny worm toward the she-cat.

  • This tiny kitten blinked at her, and came closer, then nudged the tiny pink worm closer to her and challenged her to eat it. Desdemona's brows rose up suddenly and she stared down at the earthworm with barely hidden disgust, her emotions having always been written all over her face and maw. Any other cat would tell Carrotkit that such matters were stupid and childish and that eating an earthworm was never at all a good use of their time, but Desdemona was not like any other cat in WindClan. Seeing the challenge in the kitten's eyes and knowing that denying such a dare would only weigh heavily on her over-inflated ego, Desdemona set her jaw and narrowed her green eyes. "You're on!" she responded, and in a flash, her head shot forward and she brought the slimy pink thing into her jaws. Already despising how it slid so easily over her ribbed tongue, Desdemona immediately swallowed it, and felt it slip down her throat with aftertones of earth and other such disgusting tastes. Shuddering, Desdemona glanced back at the kitten and grinned fitfully. "Easy."

  • Catching the scene out of the corner of her aureolin eyes, Birdkit was shocked to see people even considering eating an earthworm. She was scared of voicing such an opinion, though- what if people thought she was being uppity just because she was the daughter of their leader? Oh, how she wished she wasn't afflicted with such terrible shyness. She knew she had charisma in there somewhere, it was just ever so reluctant to show its face- and anyway, Birdkit didn't think she had it in her to be so full of energy like Carrotkit, or so witty like Desdemona. Was he hold life going to be jealously of others?

Still, a certain awe crossed her small featured as she caught sight of Desdemona swallowing the thing, leading her to slowly make her way over on shaky, delicate legs. "Y-You really ate it...!" she squeaked in surprise, terribly embarrassed about speaking in front of so many cats. "Was... was it gross? It looked kinda gross," she mumbled quietly, refusing to make eye contact with those around her. You'd never know that Birdkit wasn't a newborn, with how small she appeared when she was terrified like this- but curiosity overthrew that fear.

  • Patchhowl pushed a paw over his muzzle and sighed. "WindClan, clan of the blind and the weird." He turned back to Carrotkit. "A famine is when there's not enough food, and cats and other creatures begin to starve."

"It might taste a little like dirt... Imagine licking the ground in the tunnels, but slimier," He would explain. The blind medicine cat apprentice would fortunately miss out on the horrid sight of Desdemona actually consuming the creature, but he was informed of what had just transpired by Birdkit's disbelief. "It's the middle of green-leaf, there's no need to eat bugs."

  • The last thing Carrotkit had expected was that Desdemona would accept his challenge. He watched wide-eyed as she scooped the slimy worm into her mouth, throat bobbing slightly as it slid into her stomach. "Gross!" he cheered, grinning up at her with newfound admiration. To think she actually ate the worm! "I didn't think you were gonna do it for real. That was awesome!" He turned, trying to take in the reactions of his clanmates. Little Birdkit, just a few moons younger than him but so much shyer, seemed disgusted. "It looked super gross," he corrected his denmate, blue eyes blinking back toward Desdemona. "What did it taste like? I wanna eat an earthworm too."

Patchhowl's explanation momentarily dashed his enthusiasm. Cats starving didn't sound fun at all, and he involuntarily shivered. He pawed at the ground, trying not to think too hard about eating worms to survive. Hawkpaw's disbelief saved him from the thought, and he peered eagerly at the medicine cat apprentice."What's the weirdest thing you ever ate, Hawkpaw? What's the weirdest thing anyone here ever ate?" He hadn't eaten too many weird things, but he was sure the opportunity to digest something funky would come up when he got a little older.

I don't think any of us thought she would eat it for real. Hawkpaw mused, his thoughts echoing what Carrotkit had said aloud. Oh, should these cats really be eating random stuff from the ground? Although, the fresh-kill pile always sat upon the earth and no cat ever got sick from a bite of prey being chased down with a little dust.

"Huh... the weirdest thing I ever ate..." He trailed off, a tawny ear flicking as he tried to dredge up any memories of past peculiar cuisine. "I'm sure we all swallow some bugs in our sleep at one point or another. I've never purposely eaten anything too weird... but, I can tell you this: some of the herbs I've had to chew to a pulp tasted pretty foul." He admitted; he had to physically refrain from pulling a face at the thought.

  • Even as it slid painfully slow down her throat, her stomach jumped and jolted as if it were still wiggling inside of her, but Desdemona would be hard-pressed to express that among these kits who would no doubt look up to her after this. The abyssinian, thin and windswept, swallowed thickly and grinned wide, a lopsided smile with jagged teeth and a interesting effect on her angular face. She was met with shocked stares and exclamations of wonder and amazement, particularly from the younger kittens such as Birdkit and Carrotkit. Desdemona didn't mean to flaunt or anything but... She was certainly flaunting, even over something as small and stupid as eating a bug upon being dared to. "Not gross enough to effect me," Desdemona claimed loudly, shrugging her shoulders back. "It tasted a lot like dirt but slimier. It had the texture of mud but with one long noodle inside of it."

Oh, the weirdest thing she ever ate? Surely that could take the cake. Rabbit droppings were pretty gross too though, although Desdemona barely stifled a laugh at the herb comment. She had eaten a lot of herbs in her childhood, one certainly got used to them. "Well, to date, that worm is certainly the strangest."
