— as a child, ellaria was nothing more than a wide-eyed, idealistic follower; she idolized her family members and devoted herself to them entirely — especially her brother, serpentine. with time, this docile and unassertive mindset caused her to ultimately fade into the background, and though she told herself she was content with her place in life, watching her relatives succeed and do great things (with some disdainfully leaving her in the dust) eventually left her with a deep sense of bitterness and indignation. as such, in her young adulthood she vowed to change her ways in order to achieve her own ends and make up for lost time and effort; and so she did. since then she's become fiercely independent, never growing too close to anyone in fear of becoming too deeply involved in their issues and circumstances at the expense of her own individuality. she keeps everyone — acquaintances, friends, and loved ones alike — at arms length, careful to never let down her walls and show any vulnerability. everything she does is predominately in her own interest; selflessness will only lead to heartache and wasted efforts, in her mind. she almost seeks to take advantage of qualities in others that she used to have — ellaria wants others to devote themselves to her, and she'll do whatever it takes to reach the top, whether that be spying, manipulation, or other such underhanded tactics. she likes being in the know about everything, for when she lacks control she feels terribly weak and agitated. this behavior was difficult for her to adopt in the beginning, despite her determination to completely change herself. but with time it's come to feel very natural for her and she rarely falters, although occasionally she might experience a moment of weakness — a rare crack in the facade she's so carefully constructed.
