  • THIS IS MY SONG —— 🧜🏻‍♀️

Alaia was fascinated by this human. She was intriguing her. It was possibly the only reason why Alaia hadn’t forced her way out of the car by now. Her bright blue eyes took in the marking on Indie’s skin, almost akin to the way a child would look at something they just learned about. Her finger trailed over the..flower. She hadn’t seen anything like it yet during her time on land. The siren finally released the blonde’s hair, retracting her hand back to herself. Now that she knew that her dominance had been set in place she didn’t see the need to continue dragging Indie along by her hair. Her brows furrowed, watching curiously as Indie showed off her leg and another marking. Or as she called them, tattoos. She thought that the name sounded strange but then again humans theirselves were strange to Alaia. The water reminded her of home and made her determined to get her sister and return back to where they belonged. The brunette watched puzzled as Indie let her hair down from her bun. Indie reached toward her and Alaia immediately hissed at her, showing her unease with the situation. She basically was a fish out of water with no clue as to how life worked on land. The brunette seemed to understand when Indie pointed towards her hair and mentioned ‘bun’, forcing the siren to remember the hairstyle she had just seen on Indie a few moments ago. The idea managed to calm the enchanting creature down and she seemed to relax slightly. Not even moving around while Indie messed with her hair. Indie finished quickly and Alaia was quick to reach up and touch her hair. She ran her fingers along the soft strands. She tugged on the pieces of hair that hadn’t never been put into the bun. Then she set her gaze on Indie once more. Her head tilted slightly and she opened her mouth to speak. “Pretty.” She repeated, staring at the blonde. Indie said that she was ‘pretty’. The pair stared at each other that was deemed longer than necessary and Alaia sat back in her seat. However after a minute or two of silence the siren grew agitated once more. Shifting in her seat she started to look around, letting out quick heavy huffs. Her gaze landed on the radio of Julian’s car and she nearly climbed over the dashboard in order to reach it. She started pressing at the buttons of the radio until finally it turned on. The voices coming out of it nearly startled her and she seemed confused at first but continued to press multiple buttons, seemingly stuck on a talk show station. Before long she started shifting through the different stations. Ain’t it fun by Paramore started playing and Alaia stared at the radio, listening to the music. Then she turned her head to Indie, her finger pointing at the radio. She wanted to know what it was.

Indie watched as Alaia seemed to be just as unnerved by the silence and reached for the radio. She pressed at the buttons, turning it on to a talk station, some old guys blabbering nonsense about politics. Alaia didn't seem impressed either, and she continued to push buttons until music started to blare from the speakers. It was a little loud, so Indie reached forward to turn it down.

It was then she noticed Alaia was turned toward her, pointing at the radio, a question in her gaze. Indie understood that she wanted to know what it was, and a small smile played at her lips. It amazed her how quickly this enchanting creature could learn their language and ways compared to others. She had sea foam in her veins, and only knew the language of the waves, but now she seemed intent on expanding her knowledge.

"This is called a car radio. It plays music." Indie said, bobbing her head and tapping her foot to the song, as if to show it was meant to be fun.

Indie tucked a blonde curl behind her ear, her smile reaching her eyes. Before she could lower her hand, Alaia reached forward and grabbed her hand, turning it over and back. Her thumb glided over the beaded ring on her finger. She had gotten it at a flea market, supposedly handmade by the lady running the stand.

"Do you like it?" Indie asked, watching as Alaia seemed fascinated by it, her lips parted in awe. "You can have it."

Gently tugging her hand free, Indie slid the ring off her finger and took Alaia's hand in hers. She slid the ring on her finger, and it fit almost perfectly. She smiled again as she watched Alaia look the ring over.

The moment was broken when Indie spotted Julian walking back out of the bar, taking the steps two at a time, seemingly in a hurry. She moved to open the car door, stepping outside, wondering what was so urgent.

"We need to give it back." Julian said, moving toward her with purpose.

"Why? What's happening?" Indie glanced back toward Alaia, having a bad feeling about this.

"We don't need it anymore." Julian replied as he stood before them. He reached into the car, grabbing at the device and pulling on it, to which Alaia fought him, hissing. "No, no, Alaia. We need to give it back, okay?"

Alaia called it her sister, which made Indie frown, crossing her arms over her chest. She wanted to help, or for Julian to go about this a different way, but she wasn't sure how.

"This is not your sister." Julian told her as he yanked the device out of the car, but not her grip, so he took her with him. "She's not in here."

Indie watched as Alaia kept calling it her sister and hanging on, looking like she might bite Julian's head off. So she stepped forward, trying to speak in a slow and soothing voice, "We are going to help you. Friends."

Alaia quieted at this, but didn't let go, which seemed to frustrate Julian. "Look, this is not your sister. I'm giving it to James. He can help find your sister, but we need to give this back to him."

Since Alaia still didn't seem convinced, Indie took a chance and placed a hand on her shoulder. She waited a few seconds to see if there would be a negative reaction, and when there wasn't, she said, "Friends, okay? You can trust us. We can help you."

Alaia nodded her head at the name of the strange noise making device. Car radio, she thought to herself. Emitting the word into her memory so she wouldn’t forget. It was astounding how quickly she was learning the language, where as humans could possibly take years before they truly under stood it. The rate she was learning Alaia would know how to properly speak English in no time at all. The brunette looked at Indie, dragging her eyes along the woman’s body before her eyes landed on something shiny on her finger. Reaching out the siren grabbed her hand, tilting it over to stare at the shiny item. Her finger traced over it, feeling the rough groves that it had. Her lips parted slightly in awe. She had never seen something like this before. It was...pretty. Alaia did not fight back as Indie pulled her hand away, she simply watched in curiosity as the blonde took the item off. She kicked her lips, watching as Indie grabbed her hand and slid the cold metal on to her finger. Sticking her hand out Alaia’s blue eyes looked it over. “Pretty..” she whispered softly. Just then the siren noticed Julian walking back towards them. Only he did not have her sister with him which annoyed the brunette. Her bright eyes watched as Indie stepped out of the car but her look of confusion soon turned to anger as Julian reached into the car, grabbing the only thing giving her a connection to her sister. Immediately the siren grabbed ahold of it, hissing at Julian as she fought him for control. “Sister!” Alaia knew now that this thing was not her sister but it was the only thing connecting her to her sister and she did not want to let it go. She stumbled out of the car as Julian roughly pulled the device out, her hold on it not lessening in the slightest. The siren glared at Julian dangerously, baring her teeth at him. She looked nearly ready to fight him, and it was clearly obvious who was the stronger one here. Indie speaking to her managed to get Alaia to stop hissing at Julian but she didn’t let the device go. The only thing that managed to get Alaia to let go was Indie. Letting out a huff the siren pushed the device towards Julian rather roughly, watching him stagger a bit before turning and storming towards the car.

Julian staggered backwards when Alaia shoved the device into his chest, and he had to catch himself so he wouldn't fall. He seemed to have forgotten she was much stronger than he was. Though what really caught him off guard was the fact that Indie had been able to convince her to give the device back, and even let her touch her on the arm. He wondered what had gone on in his car that made them suddenly have a level of trust.

Turning back around, Julian noticed James and Nathan standing there, waiting. With a grunt, he placed the device into James' waiting arms, saying, "Here, James. I'm sorry."

James just shook his head and started to walk away, but Julian called out to him, making him turn around. Julian gestured toward the device and said, "I was thinking... We should probably work on the tracking. See if we can find where the signal comes from."

Nathan, clearly still angry and feeling betrayed, grabbed the device from James and started to walk away. James watched him go, sighing loudly. He turned back toward Julian and shrugged his shoulder. "Yeah, sure. We can try."

Indie came to stand beside Julian, a bit in front of Alaia, an almost protective stance. She was watching Nathan walk back toward his own car with her arms crossed over her chest, the wind blowing her blonde curls back.

"What's up, Indie." James said, offering a small wave.

"Hey James." Indie half-smiled and shifted her weight a bit without realizing she wasn't covering Alaia anymore. James noticed her and pointed in her direction. "Who's this?"

Both Julian and Indie glanced back toward Alaia, their mouths open, ready to reply, but no words came out. Julian was at a loss, unsure of what exactly they should say. They couldn't trust James with this. Luckily Indie was quick to think of something. "Friend of mine, from the Marine Bio class I'm taking."

Before James could say anything, Julian stepped a bit forward, saying, "While you track that, I'll try to find out more about the guy who was on the boat. I could talk to some of my colleagues, we did some research with the navy. See if they know anything."

James nodded, still glancing back toward Alaia despite the change in topic. James reached forward and placed a hand on his shoulder, causing him to look at him instead. "We're gonna find him, James."

With one last glance back toward Alaia, James nodded, patting Julian's hand. With a tired sigh, he started off in the same direction as Nathan. After he walked off, Alaia tried to follow, but Julian redirected her toward the car. "Come on."

Once they were all in the car, Julian started listing different people they could talk to about tracking down her sister. Indie retorted that you couldn't subtly ask about a mermaid. Eventually they were back downtown and were all getting out of the car. It was late at night, so they had decided to take Alaia back to Maria's.

As they were walking, Julian thought of something. He stopped in his tracks and turned toward the siren. "What will you do when you find your sister? Go home?"

Alaia just sort of cocked her head, watching Julian, but not answering. Indie glanced between her and Julian. "I don't think she understands."

Julian nodded, deciding to try again. "Alaia. If you find your sister-"

Before he could finish, Alaia answered with a yes, then started to walk again down the street. Julian and Indie didn't follow right away, but instead watched her go. Julian couldn't help but feel a bit disappointed she would be leaving, and he didn't know why. He barely knew her, and the ocean was her home. The couple exchanged a final glance before following after Alaia.

When they reached Maria's, the door was unlocked for them, so they just walked right inside. It was dark, except for the moonlight streaming through the tall windows.

"Well, we will see you tomorrow." Julian said, rubbing the back of his head.

"Bye Alaia." Indie waved her hand with a small smile.

After they said goodnight, the couple walked out of the store, closing the door behind them. They then both let out a small sigh and smiled at each other. With a small laugh, Julian wrapped an arm around her waist and walked her back to the car.

The next day Indie and Julian returned back to Maria’s home. They were all talking about something but Alaia was to use being fascinated with everything else around the house. The previous night she had left with a knife in her hand, she hadn’t hurt anyone but it was clear the longer she stayed her the more her predatory instincts were starting to kick in. She was a natural born hunter, she was a hunter in her pod so it was no surprise that it would resonate her with her even on land. She did not know what the three of them were talking about, nor did she care as she only cared about getting her sister back. The girl was fixated on a lamp, peering over the top of it and curiously watching as the light switched on and off as she played with the switch. Excited little sounds falling off her lips at her little ‘game’. However before long she soon grew frustrated and left the lamp. She stalked over to the trio, annoyance filling her features. “Sister, we go, find now.” The siren demanded, daring any of them to refuse her order. She was tired of waiting. She wanted her sister and wanted to go back home where they belonged. She turned to walk to the door, ready to leave but before she could Indie and Julian stopped her. They asked about a man and a car? “Car..” she repeated, looking at Indie blankly. Alaia did not know what a car was, and she didn’t see how this would help her find her sister either. Huffing she turned her face away from the two of them, pieces of her hair falling into her space as anger filled her slowly. She simply wanted her sister and wanted her now. She didn’t have time for these questions. “No time, sister now.” She stated more harshly this time, once again turning on her heel. Alaia didn’t get far before Indie tried to make a grab at her. Instantly her instincts kicked in, seeing it as a fight for dominance and Alaia’s hands wrapped around Indie’s arms and threw the blonde away from her and into a table, a low hiss emitting from her throat as she got into a defensive like position. She watched as Julian went to Indie, standing back up slowly. Her eyebrows were furrowed, almost feeling as if he had forced himself into their battle.

After they had left Alaia with Ms. Doyle, the couple had gone back to Julian's place. They spent most of the night trying to figure out a plan on how to find her sister, but there were too many holes and loose ends. Eventually Indie went to bed while Julian stayed up to do a bit more research.

The next morning, Indie reached out for Julian, only to find an empty space where he should have been. Groaning, she sat herself up and rubbed at her tired eyes. It was then that she felt a cool breeze waft through the bedroom. Indie pulled the covered to her chin and looked toward the cracked open window.

There Julian stood, a mug filled with fresh coffee in his hand, his shoulder leaning against the window as he looked out. He was fully clothed, wearing all black. Indie smiled at the sight.

"You're up early." She said, which made him turn. He smiled back at her.

Julian moved toward the bed, seating himself beside her. He leaned forward and placed a chaste kiss on her cheek. "Good morning, baby."

Now that Indie had a good look at him, she noticed the dark circles under his eyes. Her brow furrowed in confusion and worry. "Did you even sleep?"

At her words, Julian ducked his head and sighed. Then he shook his head no. Before Indie could scold him, Julian stopped her by speaking first. "But we have something more important to worry about. Last night, when we saw those gruesome pictures your dad had laid out on the table..."

"Maybe we're jumping to conclusions." Indie was quick to come to Alaia's defense. "I mean, a bear could have killed that guy."

Julian twisted his lip to the side, and he looked like a parent who was about to tell their kid Santa didn't exist. "When was the last time a bear threw a guy through a windshield?"

"I don't want to believe it." Indie said quietly, rubbing at her arm. She had become rather fond of the siren, even if they hadn't known each other for that long.

Julian's arms reached out and pulled her close to him, laying her head on his chest. They laid like that for a while, in comfortable silence. Part of Indie never wanted to leave that bed. The world didn't seem so complicated from Julian's arms.

"We should head over to Miss. Doyle's." Julian said after a while, and Indie agreed.

She got herself up and dressed, letting her curls fall down around her shoulders. She made herself a cup of coffee, but she didn't want to eat. She was too anxious as to what Alaia's answer would be when she asked her about the murder. Her nerves would have made her throw up everything.

Then they were in the car, heading for Maria's. Julian turned the radio on to some heavy rock station, but it wasn't enough to drown out Indie's thoughts. So she turned the radio down and told him, "She almost killed you in the water. And they found non-human blood at the crime scene. If she was in that guy's car... Then I think we both know who killed him."

Julian had nothing to say to that, and so they drove the rest of the way in silence. At one point, Indie took his hand in hers and kept it there the rest of the drive. When they got there, Maria let them in.

"Is she doing okay?" Julian asked her as they walked through the shop and into her home.

"She's restless as hell." Maria answered, glancing toward the siren. Alaia was messing with a lamp, but it didn't hold her interest long. "She went out last night. God knows where."

Indie tugged at the bottom of her sleeves, pulling the plaid shirt close to her as she crossed her arms. Julian spoke first. "We have some questions..."

"They found a body." Indie added, rocking back and forth on her black doc martens.

"Where?" Maria asked, not seeming surprised.

Before either of them could answer, Julian got a text. Indie answered her while he checked. "Outside of town, in a car."

"That was James. They got a lead."

"On the missing fisherman?" Maria raised an eyebrow at this.

"The military evacuated him-" Indie started, but Maria cut her off.

"The military?! How do they know about this?" Maria looked furious, but also very afraid.

Indie glanced at Julian, hoping he'd help her out, but instead he answered a call and walked off. So Indie took this time to fill Maria in. By the time Julian walked back over, she had just about finished.

"That's great news. Alright. Bye." Julian was saying. When he put the phone back into his pocket, he looked to Indie. "James got a text from him. They are gonna try to track the phone number. If they can, we'll meet up and follow the trail."

"Okay." Indie nodded, though she founded a bit unsure. She continued to toy with her sleeves.

It was then that Alaia demanded they go look for her sister. Julian moved in front of her, blocking her path. "Please, stop. We have to ask you some questions."

"When you first came here, looking for your sister," Indie began, moving beside Julian, "did you get in a car with a man?"

Alaia didn't seem to understand, so Indie motioned like she was driving. "A car. A man in a car."

It didn't seem to get through to her, because the siren pushed past them and started for the door. Frustrated, and not thinking, Indie reached out to touch her shoulder, hoping to stop her. "Alaia, this is important. Please-"

Her words turned into a scream as she was flung into the air and across the room. It all happened so quickly. One moment she was airborne, the next there was a shattering and a sharp pain in her arm. Then she was on the floor, the breath knocked out of her. Julian was by her side, saying her name, but she was too disoriented to reply. She glanced at her arm and saw a shard of glass in it and blood dripping down her soft flesh and onto the floor. Behind her were the remains of a broken vase.

"You okay?" Julian asked, panting, afraid for her.

"Yeah, I'm okay." Indie assured him, trying to sit up, but she needed his help to do so.

"You're hurt." He said, noticing her arm. Then Julian was looking toward Alaia with nothing short of anger. "Alaia. You can't hurt people. You're stronger than us. You're very strong."

Indie looked toward the glass, which had gone through her sleeve. Blood continued to drip down her arm to her hand and to the floor. She touched the glass and winced as it sent a shooting pain up her arm. It nearly brought tears to her eyes.

Both Maria and Julian helped her to stand, careful not to touch her injured arm. Maria pulled her aside to the kitchen table, seating her on a stool. She glanced toward the glass in her arm and back at Indie. "You don't know what you're dealing with."

Indie kept quiet, still in too much shock to think of a response to that. Instead she watched Maria go off toward the bathroom, probably for a first-aid kit, and Julian come to her side to comfort her.

"You sure you're okay?" Julian kept asking her, which was a bit annoying even if he meant well.

"Other than the glass in my arm? Yeah, I'm sure I'm fine." She tried to laugh, but it was half-hearted.
