  • Alex got up. "I'll talk to him. You'll just screw it up more." He patted Maxine's head. "Drink your excessive amount of vodka."

Max shrank in her seat beside John, wanting to disappear. She was kicking herself for not bringing Viper along. Lucius nibbled a french fry, watching Maxine. "Remember when Remy told the neighbors you ran a criminal organization?" He hummed.

    Max nodded. "Yeah."

"Not every one gets to grow up knowing everything like you, Max." Lucius mumbled. Max inwardly winced, knowing Lucius was still a bit spiteful of everything. The knife in her gut twisted when Lucius got up and followed Alex, worried about his brother.

Max sat quietly, taking a tiny sip of her drink. She collected up all the tiny little cocktail umbrellas from her drinks and sat them together. She didn't say anything to John, not wanting ti ruin it more.

  • John sighs, watching them leave. He pulls Maxine close, hugging her gently. "Look, this isnt easy, none of this is. In spite of everything, Matty loves you dearly, all of us do. Even Lucius. This isnt perfect, and it wont be. Through everything though we have each other, sure we'll have our moments, but we always will have each other. Matty'll get over it, he always does, and we'll explain to him a bit more about why its absolutely important for him to keep hush about what it is you do." John says gently, kissing her head softly. "He's 7 Max, but hes very smart...hes going to catch on eventually."

Matty sits in the car, on his phone playing a game. He always did when he was upset. He had learned to never take it out on someone, John had helped him through it.

  • "I've never had to deal with kids before, John. Lucius was taken from me by Lucifer and Remy died." Max told him, her voice quiet. She rested her head on his chest. "I'm not a good mom. Mafia and family don't mix." Her voice was a whisper against John's shoulder. "They're Alex's. They have been and always will be Alex's."

Alex unlocked the door with his spare key and sat beside Matty, Lucius on Alex's other side. Alex hugged Matty gently, watching him play. "No, no, didn't move that one, move the red one." He told him.

  • "Above everything else though Matty trusts you. His own mother got killed and hes never had a family for 3 years. He had Remy too...all the family hes ever had has been taken away from him. Max, his situation is the almost the same as yours. That doesn't make you a terrible person or mother, and Matty told me later he did everything he could to save Remy." John says quietly. "Matty needs you and he does look up to you for guidance in everything he does. You've been a great mother to him this far, just give it some time." John tells her gently, hugging her. "Let Matty be yours this time, nothing against Alex or me or Lucius, but just let him be yours and see what happens."

Matty nods, moving it, solving it in the process. "I-I-Ive been t-t-trying t-t-to f-f-figure it out f-f-for five m-m-minutes now." Matty mumbles, looking up at Alex.

  • Maxine gave John a little squeeze. "I love you." She sighed softly, pressing a kiss to his lips. "You make everything better." She nuzzled him. "I'm lucky to have you. Maybe with you I won't be a horrible mother."

Alex laughed. "I used to play a lot of games like that when I was recovering from a gunshot."

Lucius cleared his throat. "Listen, Matty. What Max and I do... It's illegal. We can get arrested and put away for a long time. Alex and John can get in a lot of trouble for not arresting us. Max snapped at you because she loves you and wants to be here for you, okay? She's not mad, she's just worried. The Mafia is our secret. So when we go out, you can't talk about it, because a other people don't like it." He patted Matty's shoulder. "It doesn't mean we're bad people, it just means our job is bad."

Alex nodded once. "That's right. So you can't go telling the world what your mother does, okay? Because it could get a lot of people in trouble."

  • "I love you too, and you are and still will be a wonderful mother." John tells her, kissing her gently. "Everything will be alright, you'll see."

Matty listens wide eyed to what they were saying. "Okay, I understand. I'll be more careful and everything." He says, looking at the two of them. "Is that why everyone trains at the range? Is that why I'm being trained?" Matty asks, curious.

  • Lucius nodded. "Everybody in the Mafia is trained in combat, but only Maxine's division are hitmen. When you get an official mentor, you choose you'll division." He answered, giving him a smile. "I didn't train with Maxine, I trained in Lucifer's gang, but I lead the Russian Mafia embassy now. Viper's brother runs one in France, Hunter's cousin has one in Japan, we have two in America. That's why we have Ruby, so we can get back and forth between them." Lucius opened the door. "Come on, my salmon's getting cold. We can talk more later."

Max gave John a smile. "How'd my awful ass end up with such a sweet, supportive guy?" She laughed softly. "I don't know what I did to deserve that."

  • "You deserve happiness and love Max, all of it." John tells her, kissing her gently. "Nothing less."

Matty nods, smiling. "Cool!" He answers, walking inside. Matty runs to their table, jumping onto Max's lap. "I'm sorry mom." Matty tells her, giving Max a hug.

  • Maxine hugged Matty tight, kissing his head. "Hello you. I missed you." She laughed, nuzzling him. "Go eat before you starve." She kissed his cheek, letting him go. Lucius and Alex were already settled in their chairs, eating their food. Max ate one of John's eggs with her extra fork.

  • Matty smiles, sitting back in between his brother and Alex. He digs back into his food, handing John his pickles. "Oh my God, this is my food, get your own." John teases, laughing. "I'm never going to eat at this rate." John says, smiling. "Y-Y-You have m-m-my p-p-pickles t-t-to eat." Matty points out, laughing. "Oh yeah, two pickles, very filling." John teases him, Matty sticking his tongue out at him.

  • Max laughed softly. "Fine, I only wanted one." She kissed his cheek. "Wouldn't want you to starve or anything." She looked up at Lucius. "Been back to Cali lately?" She asked.

"I took a business trip a couple weeks ago. Seems fine." Lucius answered.

Max scoffed, rolled her eyes as she sipped her drink. "You don't take business trips. You take go out and get black out drunk and laid trips." She used her straw to stab one of Alex's tomatoes from his salad and eat it.

Lucius just laughed at that. "Hey, you live two lives, I take business trips. And for your information, it was to oversee a shipment."

    "Shipment of dick?"

Alex choked on his water, laughing.

Lucius rolled his eyes. "You're impossible. Not like you can say much."

"Oh shut up, my three marriages say I can do what I want." Max grumbled, finishing off her giant glass of vodka sunrise.

  • John playfully rolls his eyes at Max, eating his food. "Yes I don't want to starve." He teases, smiling. John continues eating, trying to ignore the conversation happening around him. "W-W-What's a d-d-dick?" Matty asks, John choking on his drink. "Matty, dont ask that." John answers, after clearing his throat. "B-B-But m-m-mom said L-L-Lucius g-g-got some." Matty replies, John covering Matty's mouth. "No she didnt, she said he ships it...oh God why am I arguing over this?" John says, shaking his head. "So w-w-why d-d-does one s-s-ship d-d-dick and w-w-what is i-i-it?" Matty asks again.

  • Alex was in tears laughing. "I'm not helping you."

Max choked on her drink, coughing. "Hey, we don't talk about how much dick I may or may not ship."

Lucius cleared his throat, a tiny smile on his face. He took out his phone and googled it for Matty. "No more questions and stop talking about mom getting dick."

"You know who ships a lot of dick? Alex." Max hummed, innocently, nibbling a home fry. Alex gave her a defensive look. Lucius gagged. "Wow didn't need to hear about my grandfather getting some."

"I'm only in my fifties!" Alex defended, looking up from his phone. "And for your information, young man, Vischer is very nice."

"You said that about Amanda." Max told him, making a vomiting noise.

"Oh shut up, your three ex husbands weren't too great either." Alex grumbled.

  • "E-E-Ew, why w-w-would s-s-someone w-w-want that?" Matty says, looking at Lucius' phone. "Your mother for one." John says, laughing. "Gross." Matty replies. John laughs, shaking his head. "You may not mind so much in the future." John tells him, Matty looking disgusted. "I-I-I dont t-t-think I'll e-e-ever w-w-want t-t-that." Matty says, throwing a French fry at him. "Can we please change the subject?" John pleads, hearing the other conversation.

  • Maxine rested her chin on John's shoulder. "We're disturbing his lunch." She kissed John's cheek lightly.

Alex stretched. "Yeah, I've got to get going soon." He hummed, yawning. Lucius gave Alex a smile. "It was good to see you again. Next time I visit, bring Vischer too." He teased warmly.

Alex smiled, shrugging a little. "Maybe." He hummed.

Maxine took out her wallet and tossed her debit card on the table, yawning. "Yeah, we have to go home and check on Sherlock." She wrinkled her nose.

  • John smiles, holding Max close. "Going back to Mother Russia for more dick?" Matty asks teasing, switching to a Russian accent. "Matthew!" John says, a warning tone in his voice. "W-W-What?" Matty asks mischievously, back in his natural dialect. "You know very well what." John replies, Matty smiling. "Hopefully no more body parts in the kitchen." John answers in a low tone.

  • "Nah, that's only in California." Lucius answered, looking at the time. "I don't know when Ruby wants me back."

Max rolled her eyes at Matty. "Hey, don't let people think I let you get away with saying that shit." She warned.

Alex rolled his eyes. "Filter, Max, please get one."

"I changed the damn air filter in my office, you hush." Max huffed.

Alex shook his head, laughing softly. "Alright. Text me. I love you." He patted Maxine's shoulder. "Be good." He kissed her cheek, waving at Lucius and Matty. "See you soon."

Max took her card back from the waitress, giving her a smile. "Everybody in the car before we embarrass ourselves more. Are you driving back, love?" She asked John, giving him a kiss.

  • Matty just gives Max his pretend innocent smile, going to the car. He then pulls out his notebook, designing another weapon. "Alex, Max doesnt really have a filter around Matty and neither do the people he hangs around." John tells him, smiling slightly. "Only if you want me to." John answers, giving her a kiss. "And by the way, if Matty orders a scythe to be made, you're going to have another Lucius on your hands."

  • Max nodded, handing him her keys. "Be my cute British chauffeur." She told him, glancing in the rearview mirror at her sons. "I wouldn't expect anything less from a son of the King of Death." She murmured, a tiny smile on her face.

Maxine's death count was enough to make even Moriarty jealous. Maxine was dubbed the King of Death by gangs and police alike. They feared her like a god, and for good reason. Nobody could catch her, she was untouchable.

Leaning over, Max gave John a kiss. "Viper's probably home for lunch by now so hopefully we won't interrupt Sherlock's... Dick shipment." She mumbled the last part for only John to hear.

  • "I like that nickname." Matty mumbles absentmindedly, trying to get the handle right on his sketch. John just shakes his head, starting up the car. "Mattys going to turn out just like you." John tells her, driving onto the main road. "And I sure hope so, I dont want to walk in on that." John laughs, holding her hand gently.
