—- Not the Time for Self-Discovery
Imagine, for a moment, that one day you discovered that you weren’t quite human.
There was this, power, inside of you, that you never even imagined before it suddenly started to flare to life. One of us was suddenly able to control kinetic energy, for example. Another turned into a fucking werewolf. These weren’t normal gifts, but, then, this isn’t really a normal world, is it? In an ideal world, we would have had time, and a safe place, to learn about our gifts, to get a grasp on exactly what each of us can do. Practice makes perfect, right? You don’t really want to accidentally stop a moving plane in its tracks, for example, when it comes to the kinetic energy guy. Or the werewolf; You don’t want them to start ripping people apart all of a sudden, do you? So, yeah; Right now, it’s all about self-discovery.
Unfortunately, we’re a little short on time and safe places, so it’s going to have to be on-the-job training.
See, the five of us have just woken up in some kind of... Hospital, maybe? Or institute? It’s hard to say, at first glance. Alone in the dark, with only a voice from a speaker and each other for company. But, if this is a hospital, it’s not the kind you’d ever send your sick granny to. There’s something here, in the dark, and it’s not just the few white-coated doctors. Each echoing, empty hallway just leads into another, each silent room holds no new answers. You’d better hope you can get a grip on your newfound powers quickly; Because judging by the sounds that keep getting closer, we’re running out of time. There’s something dragging itself toward us. No matter how quickly we run, it always finds a way to catch up. You’re seeing things, now, too, things you can’t explain. And there’s no way out.
Are you scared?
—- The Big Idea
So, basically, the blurb above is a fancy way of saying this; Five teenagers who just discovered they have some freaky powers are, totally against their will, taken and dumped into some kind of hospital or asylum. It’s almost empty, but not quite. There’s a voice coming from the speakers, asking questions, questions none of us can really answer. But that’s not our biggest problem, because there’s something in there with us; And it’s not friendly.
When the roleplay starts the five teens have been inside the institute for about two weeks, and two pairs of friendships have started to form. Beyond being, you know, kept there against their will, nothing too creepy has happened up until now; But that’s about to change.
Based heavily on what we know about the delayed “The New Mutants” movie, but I decided against actually setting this in the Marvel universe. Simpler to roleplay this way, I find. ^.^ Thanks to ForeverYoung2004 for the idea!

Samuel Elias Corbin
Nickname(s): Sam is generally acceptable, though a few of his old friends used to call him Elias or Eli.
Age and Date of Birth: 19, 8th of December
Ethnicity: Guatemalan Latino/Jewish
Gender: Male
Sexual Orientation: Pansexual
Personality Description: Boy scouts could learn something from Samuel Corbin. What's immediately obvious is that he's uptight, dutiful, responsible, and completely dedicated to following the rules. He believes in the system, any system, and that optimism permeates everything he does; He honestly does believe that everything will work itself out in the end, even if it's not clear just yet how. While he can be a little self-righeous, it's certainly clear that Sam would not give up on you, or anyone else, no matter what you've done or why; He believes that everyone can be saved.
So, basically, he's dangerously naive.
A natural pacifist, Sam finds it very hard to stand up for himself, which seems odd given his physical size and strength. Oh, given imminent real danger, he'll do what he has to to protect himself or others, but he will always seek to solve problems with diplomacy, kindness, and Kumbaya. He's curious, intelligent, charming, and quite funny, though his continuous insistence on the good nature of his fellow man can become tiring. In a group of angry teenagers, feral girls, and born cynics, he's the voice of optimism, perseverance, and, especially, hope. And, yet, there is one side to Sam that isn't quite so admirable; His anger. Though it represents as self-righteous, Sam can, and will, become more and more pissed the more people disappoint his high ideals. His temper is considerable, and some of his worst moments came when he lost control of his rage and lashed out. Perhaps it comes from being so controlled the rest of the time, or maybe it's just a means to express his darker side. Still, it's a problem... And an opportunity. The best way to get Sam to go charging into battle, pacifism be damned, is to just piss him off before the fight.
Also, Sam has one more coping mechanism; He's kind of a borderline alcoholic. But that won't be a problem, right?
Power: Sam has the ability to manipulate kinetic energy; He can slow, speed up, stop, or otherwise exert influence on movement itself. Generally speaking, this power allows him to throw objects with extreme speed, and therefore force, slow down potentially dangerous projectiles or enemies, or, theoretically, move himself or other people around. Most of these applications are beyond him at the moment, however, as he’s only been able to master the very basics of moving objects around. It is also theoretically possible for him to be able to, in a limited capacity, control both fire and ice; All he would need to do was generate enough kinetic energy in the air itself to start a fire, or to slow those same particles down enough to flash-freeze something. Again, entirely theoretical at this point, as he’s barely even begun to learn how to use his gift.
Family: Father - Derek Corbin, (Deceased) l Mother - Lily Corbin, 45, Nurse l Younger Brother - Tyler Corbin, 16 l Younger Brother - Henry Corbin, 14 l Younger Brother, Jamie Corbin, 11
History: Sam is the oldest of four boys, and he took the "big brother" job extremely seriously, especially once their father Derek died and Lily, their mother, was forced to start working all the time to make ends meet. Sam became the law, father, mother, policeman, and sometimes, teacher to his little brothers. He gave up most of his own teenage years for them, and never once complained about it to anyone. He started drinking instead. Much healthier.
A good boy when in view of anyone else, and a half-drunk, angry idealist the rest of the time, Sam's life took a distinct turn for the worse when he graduated high school. Unwilling to go off to college and leave his brothers to fend for themselves, no matter how old they might be now, Sam stayed home and picked up a job as a waiter at a local restaurant. It was there that his power first manifested; A customer tripped over a chair leg and came dangerously close to breaking her neck. Without even thinking about it, Sam just... Stopped her. He stole the kinetic energy from her, leaving her suspended, for a moment, mid-fall; And then she did fall, but much more slowly, and perfectly safely. Nothing was ever the same after that; And it was only a matter of time before it caught up with him.
Faceclaim: Froy Gutierrez
Other: Ashton and Catalina are going to be getting migraines from the amount of eye-rolling they're going to be doing when it comes to Sam and his sunny attitude. xD
