  • Madison took in Luke’s words. The princess knew that her lover was right and that she would just have to get use to all eyes being on her for when her time as queen cane. Still it would take some getting use to. She wasn’t use to this many people seeing her. Being isolated from the world did that to a girl she supposed. Her warm eyes danced around the rooms themselves, watching everyone as they watched her. Before long she felt Luke’s hands on her face. He directed her back to look at him and only him. His tender actions made her smile. He truly did care about her. Madison's hand raised and caressed his cheek softly, her thumb running over his skin. After their small moment the couple began to dance again. The people in the ballroom watched in awe but Madison kept her gaze solely on Luke. A man she loved, and would be marrying in less than a day’s time. His kiss warmed her and made her feel butterflies in her stomach. She was starting to truly believed that if she gave it time that one day she could be helplessly in love with this man. The night continued on and Luke and Madison stayed by each other’s side. Royals came and went offering their congratulations. Madison could even sense some jealously from some of the women who gazed upon Luke. It was almost silly really, she thought. Wanting a man who was clearly in love with someone else and showed no interest in you. Madison was trying her best to be happy and cheerful, and for a time she was. But before long the future queen started to feel tired. Her eyes started to blink less and less, and her movements were slowly losing speed. Just like that she was gone. Out like a blown out candle light. It was happening again. The only difference this time was that she was asleep but it was like her body was still awake, just unresponsive. Corpse like in a way. In her dream, well nightmare was more fitting, she saw dozens of people. Screaming for her to help them. Children, women, men. It was terrifying. Their screams and cries of pain rang in her ear so loudly that it nearly hurt. Tears started to spill out of her dream-self’s eyes and she fell to her knees and lifted her hands to cover ears. She was trying her absolute hardest to drown out the sounds and offer herself some relief but it didn’t work. If anything it made the sounds louder. “Make it stop, make it stop!” She screamed out in her mind. Unbeknownst to her, her words were transferring out into the real world. Only in incoherent mumbled and grumbles, barely even words. Her body was hot, and shaky as she let out repeated pants as if dying for some cold water. In reality she was simply tired and exhausted. Madison felt herself slowly start to come back to reality as she felt her body moving more than it had been before. Her eyes blinked and she looked up groggily to find herself nestled into James’ side as he walked her away from the party. Her head hurt and it felt as if her throat was sure as well. Maybe she was just sick and that was why these things kept on happening. Sucking in a breath she glanced back up at James. They were going to be alone in her room maybe that would be the perfect time to tell him about he- Screams filled the air and a look of terror crossed Madison’s pretty face. “What’s going on.” She couldn’t turn her head back to look because James had a tight grip on her to keep her from falling. He told her to start running and to not look back. This made her worry even more. She lifted her arms and pushed away from the blonde, determined to know why he was acting in such a weird manner. Shaking her head she looked up and looked back towards the ballroom. The sight made her eyes widen and for a moment she felt as if she may throw up. It was almost as if everything was in slow motion. First her eyes noticed the amount of people being killed by guards, her guards. Then her eyes went towards the throne and her hands flew to her mouth as she saw her father lying on the ground, his body motionless and covered in his own blood. Her eyes swelled with tears that began to pour down her checks and she blinked. Then her eyes found Luke. He looked as if he was trying to make his way towards her and James but before he could get far someone struck him with a sword. Madison cried out at the sight and nearly fell to the ground in despair. Looking back up anger and pain in her typically warm eyes her eyes landed on her uncle. In that very moment she had never held as much hate for someone as she did for him. He took nearly everything from her in one night. Her father, her fiancée, her kingdom. The only thing she had left was Janes. Their gazes locked and Madison swore to herself if no one else that she would get her revenge. She could hear Darren yell at his guards to get them. That was when she realized that they needed to go, and fast. She grabbed the ends of her dress and turned on her heels. She began to ran as fast as her legs could carry her. She knew James was following her but she did not know where they should go. Madison knew they needed to leave but they couldn’t just go out in the open like this. They would be recognized immediately. As she ran down a series of stairs she panted. “What do we do?” She asked James who was running beside her. Madison trusted him with her entire life and to show that she would follow his lead in this situation she grabbed his hand.

As they ran down the stairs, James drew his sword out of its scabbard. He knew that it would come down to a fight. Luckily most of the guards were still in the ballroom and not all of the Quoar guards had taken Darren's side. That didn't mean that they were safe or that they would win. He had no idea how many of the guards had taken the madman's side.

James could hear the blood-curdling screams, could hear the children crying for their mother's, could see people spilling out of the doors and trampling their neighbors as they reached for safety.

It occurred to him that one day this event would be recorded in the Book of Quoar so that those not born to see such days could read the story - so that they could never forget. But what would be the ending of this tale? Would it end in the reign of King Darren or of Queen Madison?

He hoped for the latter. And so he would protect Madison, as he was sworn to do.

As they reached the bottom floor, she took his hand and asked what they were to do. James only had seconds to think of an answer to that. Her uncle would know soon that she had escaped and he would send his dog and men to hunt her down.

Before he could answer, two guards ran up to them and noticed the princess. They then held their positions - ready to attack.

"Traitors." James spat at them with angry grey eyes. The first man attacked and James was ready for him. The guard swung his sword, but James was quicker and dodged just in time. he then used the hilt of his sword to knock him on the side of the head - causing him to stumble. He slid his sword through him from behind as the other guard ran at him. James turned and swung his sword only for it to clink as it hit the other man's. Their swords continued to meet each other until the guard was able to disarm him. Now unarmed, James thought quickly and punched the guard right in the face. His helmet flew as he stumbled. James ignored his now throbbing hand and reached down to grab his own sword. Before the guard could regain himself, James lifted his sword and swung it down - splitting the man's head open.

Flicking his sword, sending scarlet droplets flying onto the vibrant tile, James nodded toward Madison and they ran out of the castle doors. Once outside, James stopped by a corpse of a woman and took the cloak still in her hands. He handed it to Madison and told her, "Put this on."

She did so with a frown before they took each others' hands once more and ran into the woods. He knew they would track them in there, but it would be better to have cover than to be out in the open.

They ran straight for the stables so that they may have horses. They needed to get away quickly and they were sure to be captured if they continued on foot.

When they reached the stables, most of the horses had been taken already. The stable boy laid despondent on the ground, so James killed him in a fit of mercy.

Lucky for them, both of their horses had remained in their stables.

"We must hurry." He told her as he helped her with the saddle. Once she was atop her horse, he saddled his own and was atop him. He owned a golden stallion with a dark mane named Finnikin who was said to be the fastest in the land.

As they left the stables, they rode long and hard until they were sure that they were not being followed. They did not take the King's Road for fear of being recognized and instead took a different, less known path.

Eventually, they found themselves on a rocky cliff above the hills. Below the flat expanse resembled the softness of sand over a desert. There was a trail of men, an army of at least six hundred, that made a line across the low-lying country. They looked like tiny insignificant ants at the mercy of the nothingness surrounding them. Soon, they would arrive at the castle and there would be no stopping Darren from taking the throne.

"Come on. We can't stay here." James urged, speaking quietly - as if the army below could hear them.

They rode on for the entire night until the sun began to peak above the trees. They were heading north toward the Wasteland which was known for its abundance of bandits and exiled criminals. It was a dangerous place, but it couldn't possibly be as dangerous as their home. They would need to pass through it in order to come to a safe village or a holy temple that would keep them safe. It would take a few days to do so, but James was prepared to lay down his life to keep her safe.

"You seem tired." He commented, one of the few things he had said to her since they were on the run. "We can stop and rest soon. There should be an inn a few days ride from here."

They continued through the forest, far from any of Darren's men but not from other dangers. Madison had long since discarded her jewels and placed them in a small bag of coin that James carried with him. They did not want to raise more suspicion than they already would. They would have to find a new dress for the princess, one that wasn't so expensive and frilly.

He did not speak to the princess about what had happened. He could not. Neither of them were ready and he knew this. She was already filled with fear and James had realized after many years that those filled with fear were the most dangerous of people. He needed her to be strong and the best way to do that was to stay away from the topic of losing her kingdom. At least for now. Once they were safe in an inn, in their own room, then they would speak.

As they drew closer to the land that the army had marched on the night before, and away from the rocky terrain, James began to notice the change. What he had thought was sand turned out to be a thick claylike substance that tested even his horse's balance. As they moved on, they grew closer toward the ocean. They were traveling on a seabed and by nightfall the waters would return and there would be no hope of leaving such a place until the next low tide.

"We should be close." He told her, though his gaze was distant. he thought about how this was the first time Madison was seeing the world beyond the castle. He only wished that it had been under different circumstances.

  • Not to long after Madison asked James what they should do did two guards appear. At first Madison hoped that they were on their side but when they both went into fighting stances she realized just how wrong she was. She couldn’t believe how quickly her life was falling apart. Mere minutes ago she was just a princess who could not decide on if she should tell James about her feelings for him or hold it on in and marry Luke despite not loving him as much as he loved her. Now none of that mattered because Luke was dead, and her father was as well. Her visions were coming true and that thought scared her. Was she suppose to be some sort of seer now? Seeing into the cold grim future? If so than she did not want it and wished for her new abilities to be passed on to someone else. She would much rather just stick to her water abilities. It did not take long for James to beat the two traitors, both men dead. Had these been innocent men Madison may have felt bad for them but since they were traitors who turned their back on their kingdom, more importantly her father, than they deserved their deaths. Once his fight was over the pair ran out of the castle. Now she could silently thank James for all the years of training. She would need her endurance for all this running they had to do. James handed her a cloak and Madison put it on with great hesitation. It just didn’t feel right but she had no choice. The two ran into the forest, no doubt still being chased by Darren’s followers. The ran to the stables, needing their horses for their journey. As the ran she couldn’t help but to notice that this would be her first time outside of the castle walls. It broke her heart to know that it was because of her uncle’s selfish reasons. After they were both saddled they continued on. Madison couldn’t help but to think as they rode. Should she tell James about her visions and how they had come true tonight? After all she told him everything. Even when she met Luke she had ran straight to the guard and told him about him. Maybe a part of her had hoped that it would stroke some jealously in the man and he would tell her that he had feelings for her but that obviously did not happen. They were heading towards the Wasteland. The place mothers used in bedtime stories in order to get their children to behave. Madison had only ever heard stories of the place but from what everyone said about it it did not seem like the type of place she belonged in. With one hand holding onto the lease of her horse Moesy. After what seemed to be hours of riding Madison began to grow tired. It was probably from being emotionally exhausted all day but she felt as if she could sleep for the next ten days and still wake up tired. Part of her wanted to speak about this day. James nearly kissing her, her visions, the celebration. The other part knew that she wouldn’t be able to handle such a talk right now. They only needed to focus on getting past these lands and somewhere safe where they could sleep. “I hope that we get there soon.” She didn’t know how much longer she could stay awake and it would do neither of them any good if she fell asleep while riding her horse. She would just slid off and fall to the ground.

James continued to ride on at a casual pace, now sure that they were far off enough that Darren's men were not following them. Eventually they turned away from the ocean and walked onto a stony path.

As time passed, he knew that they were in the Wasteland because rotten corpses hung from the trees and heads on spikes littered the hillsides. Old bones were hidden among the tall grass that was on each side of the path.

"Do not be afraid. That's what they want." James spoke softly so that only she could hear.

There was no sign of life so far, but James still kept an eye out. As they trekked on, he continued to see blood painted on stones in different symbols for different clans. Yet they were alone. Though he couldn't help but feel as if they were being watched.

The Wasteland was not what he had expected. It was beautiful, really. Besides the corpses, of course. It was plentiful in green grass and one could hear the creeks rumbling nearby. The sunlight shone brightly down on them and James began to feel a bit uncomfortable in his leather, but it was not too hot.

James paused, pulling on the reins. His head was spinning and his mouth began to taste of a sickly substance. He was starving, he realized. Neither of them had eaten since late yesterday. What he wouldn't do for rabbit pie.

The dull stench of pigeon filled his nostrils and turned the contents of his belly. His hands and thighs ached from riding and he longed to be able to place his feet flat against the ground.

James stared ahead at the cliff face nearby, the rock seeming to be stable and in the shade. James thought about pausing to rest, but the bloody symbols on the stones made him pause.

"We need to rest. We may be able to set up camp over there for now." He told Madison while motioning toward the cliff nearby. It was surrounded by trees and they wouldn't be easily spotted.

Before anything else could be said, there was a whoosh as a chain flew through the air. It then wrapped around James' neck tightly enough to crush his windpipe. His stallion reared back and whinnied - throwing him off. As the horse ran off into the tall grass, James fell to the ground and began to claw at his neck in an attempt to rid himself of the chain. He gasped for air as he looked up toward Madison.

Two men and a woman appeared out of the tall grass with smug smirks.

"And what do we have here?" The first man said as he drew his sword. It was long and crooked, unlike any a royal guard would carry.

"A pretty girl and her weak companion. And possibly some gold." The other guy said with a wicked smile that showed his rotten teeth. He was holding a mace though much larger than any James had seen.

"I see dinner." The woman said as she held her two blades up, as if ready to strike.

    pip!

we are ready to introduce minx :)

  • MINX " MINXIE " VALKYRIE RANGER

twenty | cisgender female | bisexual | thief princess | marked with light

Minx sat on the top of a cliff, resting on top of a thick log. Her worn hands clutched her hunting knife in one hand and a rabbit she was skinning in the other. Minx was an odd girl. She was one of the few who weren't afraid of the Wasteland. The clans of the Wasteland were terrified of her, if anything. The infamous killer daughter of Felix Ranger. Her blood lust held no bounds and the clans knew it. She would kill just about anyone for the right price. The only loyalty she knew was to her people, her guild. Minx finished skinning the rabbit and fed the fire a bit, making sure it would be hot enough to cook her food. Minx often escaped to the Wasteland when she needed a little time to herself, just to escape the world. She found the Wasteland beautiful and many of the people she liked to avoid, were far too afraid to come and follow her. She knew the fire made her location obvious but the clans knew. To attack Minx, would mean an unbearable death. She would torture them just for looking at her wrong. One would say the girl had no soul. Often times, she didn't believe she truly did. She took too much joy in death to possibly have a soul. It was a way of making her feel numb and powerful at the same time. It was almost like a drug high for her. Minx lifted her head and she looked out over the horizon. She stabbed a stick through the rabbit with a soft grunt and set it on the holder above the fire. She wiped her dirty and bloody hands on her leather pants. She narrowed her eyes and tossed the rabbit's skin to the left, knowing a wild animal would make use of the skin somehow. She lacked the desire to fashion the fur into something she could use. Minx brushed her wild curls over her shoulder as she stabbed her bloody hunting knife into the log beside her. She licked her lips with anticipation and watched the rabbit slowly cook. She was very invested in her next meal, knowing she would eventually have to return to Felix and the others. She clenched her jaw at the thought. But then, a blood curdling scream sliced through her thoughts like a knife. She jumped up, her sword drawn in her left hand and her hunting knife in her other hand. She looked around with wide eyes and then realized the scream had come from below her. Minx approached the edge of the cliff and saw the scene unfolding. Three bandits had captured a man and a woman. The woman was in fancy clothes and seemed utterly useless. The man was being choked by a chain from one of the bandits and her eyes narrowed. She sunk to the ground like a feline and accessed the situation.

Minx raised an eyebrow as she studied the man. She thought he was one of the most attractive men she had seen. She pursed her lips and slowly curled into a smirk. She imagined he would be grateful for her rescuing them and would reward her later on. Minx giggled devilishly at the thought and stood, deciding to save them. Purely based on the thought of sleeping with the handsome man and having amazing sex. Minx jumped down the sides of the cliff, making her way down quickly and silently. She reached the bottom of the cliff and jumped down, her boots making a loud crunch on the ground. All eyes fell on her and her pink lips curled into a deep smirk. She unsheathed her sword and held her hunting knife in the other hand, ready for a fight. She twirled her sword in her hand and exhaled slowly, lifting her chin. "I suggest you let the eye candy and his companion go or I will kill you slowly and painfully." Minx purred, a devilish glint in her dark gaze. When one of the bandits, the woman, spat back at Minx, the warrior rolled her eyes. She flicked her wrist and made light emit from her palm, shining it directly on the woman. The woman screamed in pain as the light seared her eyes and she began to scream about how she was blind. Minx snickered and closed her hand, the light extinguishing. She flipped her hair over her shoulder, daring the others to attack. One of the men let out a barbaric yell and released the man from his chains as he sprinted at Minx. The girl yawned and sighed, bored. She rolled her head back and easily dodged his swing by bending backwards. Minx growled in his face as she shot back up, hitting the man in the throat with the hilt of her sword. She heard a loud crunch as she crushed his windpipe and he began to gasp wildly as he fell to his knees. Minx kicked him in the chest, knocking him to the ground. She narrowed her eyes at him, a fire in her eyes as she decided to let him suffer and kill him last. The second man attempted to jump on Minx from behind and Minx easily spun out of the attack, making the man crash to the ground. He growled and got back on his feet quickly. Minx narrowed her eyes, her eyes glowing golden for a moment. She lifted her hand and a ray of light emitted from her palm and formed a ribbon, wrapping around the man's throat. She hissed and tightened it, a curl on her lip. The man gasped out and fell to the ground, his face turning red. "Doesn't feel so nice now, does it?" Minx said with a deep smirk. She clenched her fist and snapped his neck. The light returned to her palm and she turned to the woman, who was crawling around, frantically trying to find her sword. She marched over, the woman beginning to panic as she heard Minx's boots crunching the ground. Minx came up to the woman and yanked her up by the hair and held her up against her own body, her hunting knife at her neck. "Someone should have really taught you manners." Minx hissed, her eyes turning to slits like a feline. She growled and moved to stab the woman in the stomach, ripping upward. The woman cried out with a pained scream and Minx dropped her body, leaving her to bleed out.

Minx sighed and glanced over at the man still choking from his crushed windpipe. She narrowed her eyes as she watched his face turn purple. She smirked and wiped off her bloody hunting knife on her shirt. Minx sauntered up to the two people she had rescued, moving with a grace that only a confident woman could have. She stood before them, a hip cocked to the side. She smiled at them, a dark chuckle leaving her lips. "I'm Minx or Minxie to my friends. I think you and I could be friends, handsome." Minx said with a wink sent to the blonde male. She snickered at his flustered reaction and she looked over the two of them. They obviously wouldn't have gone into the Wasteland unless they were desperately trying to escape someone or something. Minx's lips pursed with curiosity. She wondered what it could be.

  • This was by far the worst day of Madison’s entire life. First she starts having this horrifying visions just as James was about to kiss her which by the way was the worst timing she’s ever witnessed in her life. Then her father and her fiancée are murdered before her eyes by her uncle and his men. Oh and then of course they have to be attacked by a group of mad people who want to eat them for dinner. She never would quite understand the point behind cannibalism, but it didn’t seem like any of those three fiends had all their wits about them so truthfully it didn’t even matter why. Luckily for them some strange girl showed up and saved them. The princess watched in awe as she took out each of the bandits one by one, crouched down beside James worriedly. She didn’t know who this mysterious woman was but whoever she was she was like Madison. For years the princess had believed that she was the only one who was gifted with magic. After all she never got the chance to know her mother and did not know that there was an entire kingdom filled with people who weilded magic of their own. To see someone have powers like her who could wield them so effortlessly inspired Madison.

Standing to her feet the princess dusted off her cloak. She was more than glad that, that whole ordeal was done and over with. Now she and James just needed to get out of the Wastelands and to find a inn to stay for the night before continuing on with their long journey. Hopefully the inn they chose would have food and water for them to have. Her throat was dry and in dire need of refreshment and her stomach was beginning to growl with that tale tell need for food. When their savior grew nearer Madison began to open her mouth, intending on thanking the woman for saving them and even planning on complimenting her about her powers..and then the woman opened her mouth. Now Madison knew that she was pretty small and that she wasn’t the strongest person in the world and that her cloak was a dark color and blended in to the darkness of the night but the princess knew for a fact that she was not invisible and that this woman could clearly see her standing right next to James. How rude of her. The brunette blinked slowly, a tight smile forming on to her pink lips. Nearly instinctively she moved and latched her arm around one of James’. Madison didn’t know what was going through this lady’s mind but she wanted her to know that James was definitely not available. They had yet to talk about their almost kiss from yesterday morning but there was no way that the man would kissed her if he didn’t harbor feelings for her right? Madison knew James, and knew that he wasn’t that type of man. “Thank you for saving us, it was very kind of you.” Even though the princess now suspected that the only reason this, Minx, had done so was to try and get with James. “I wish we could stick around and talk some more but the two of us really should be off. We have to find an inn to stay in for the night beyond these lands.” And the sooner try got away from this woman and her flirtatious behavior the better.

Madison was about to turn and go back to her horse when Minx spoke up saying that she had a group the two could stay with. The princess was not interested. Something about this girl rubbed her the wrong way now. Before she could speak up and say anything James accepted her proposal. Madison’s brown eyes turned to look at James as if he had grown a second head in the past minute. Or maybe the air blockage from that chain wrapped around his neck was affecting his thinking. “Could you give us one moment.” It wasn’t really a question. Grabbing James’ hand Madison walked a few yards away from Minx. She and him needed to have a little chat. Dropping the man’s hand she crossed her arms over her chest looking up at him. “James I know we need to find a place to sleep for the night but you can’t possibly be serious can you? We don’t know this girl.” For all either of them knew she could be leading them into a trap for her group to kill them and eat them instead. Madison practically shivered at the thought.

James could feel the life slipping away from him as his throat constricted and his shallow pants filled the air. His fingers clawed at the metal chain that was squeezing his neck when he noticed a young woman climb down from the hill and threaten the group of cannibals. His vision was blurry, so for a few moments he could have sworn it was Madison.

He wanted to scream at her to run, to not face the sick bastards alone, but then the woman began to fight them. A bright light emitted from her palm and he realized that this wasn't Madison. He had no idea who was saving them.

Just as his vision was becoming spotty, the chain loosened around his neck and dropped to the ground. James gasped for air as he gagged, attempting to retch, but nothing was coming up because his stomach was empty. His forehead was warm and beaded with sweat, as if he had a fever.

For a moment, he looked around in fear. The exiles had been killed, all but one who was choking himself. The guard then let realization settle and despair filled him. If this woman hadn't come along and saved them, then the pair would surely have died. He would have failed to protect his princess.

The woman then introduced herself as Minx and called him handsome, which he was not expecting. She even winked at him, which caused him to lose his breath all over again.

Standing, he brushed himself off and began to rub at his neck. Light tilleul bruises were beginning to bloom on his fair skin. The male stood and watched this Minx girl with a careful gaze. He wasn't sure why she had come to their rescue since she was obviously an exile herself and the pair were obviously from Quoar - high up, as well. Or at least Madison appeared that way. Perhaps she wished for their gold? Ransom? He knew that their savior's goodwill came with a price.

Then Minx offered to let them stay with her and he furrowed his brow. She was not solo, she came with a group. Which meant tents and food and water. Gods, he was parched. Perhaps it wasn't a group of dukes, kings, and queens but it would do.

Madison was quick to pull him aside and voice her concerns, but James simply shook his head. He understood her suspicion, but he knew that this was the best way to protect her.

"Madison, darling." He spoke kindly, not at all trying to berate her. "Don't you think if she meant to harm us she would have by now? If she wanted us dead then she would have let the cannibals do her dirty work for her. She can take us to food, water, shelter. If we stopped at an inn, it would still take a few days to arrive to the nearest one. We could possibly run into more trouble along the way and she won't be there to save us if anything goes wrong. And if we did make it to the inn, then there are spies everywhere. We still wouldn't be safe."

Leaning forward enough for their breath to mingle, enough to whisper so Minx couldn't hear them, he told her, "They have no idea who you are. Exiles do not spend their time worrying about the kingdoms and their politics. All she knows is that we are wealthy, or were, but are no longer, and possibly on the run. And it will stay that way. Understand?"

He glanced toward Minx again, who was eyeing them with curiosity. James huffed before turning to look at Madison again. "I will keep you safe. I swear it."

He almost choked on the words as just moments before he had almost failed her. Still, he swore to himself that he would never fail her again.

Bowing his head, he spoke lowly, "May the gods have mercy on us both."

Turning back around, James made his way toward Minx. He offered a crooked smile before telling her, "My name is James and this is Madison. We will go with you. I swear I will find some way to repay you for saving us both."

His eyes now looking off into the distance, he sighed wistfully. He hoped that his horse was nearby as they were going to need him whenever they set off again. At the very least they could sell him, as much as that would break his heart.

  • MINX " MINXIE " VALKYRIE RANGER

twenty | cisgender female | bisexual | thief princess | marked with light

Minx narrowed her eyes as the girl spoke to her in a passive aggressive manner, which Minx really didn't appreciate. She adjusted and popped out her hip, her hand instinctively resting on the hilt of her sword. She watched the way the woman interacted with the blonde man. She seemed... possessive of him. This made Minx smirk. She liked a challenge. And she always liked to get what she wanted. Minx flipped her curls over her shoulders, a purse on her lips. She lifted her chin, her voice slicing through the other woman's fake-nice words. "I have a group. A guild. We are ruffians but we can't be as bad as the people you're running from if you chose the Wasteland rather than face them." Minx mused as she looked over the two. They looked pretty rough but that was to be expected of anyone who had no clue on how to survive in this part of the world. The world was much more cruel than people made it seem, Minx would know. She had the scars to prove it. Minx moved to twirl her hunting knife between her fingers and a deep smirk curled onto her pink lips. She watched the look the woman gave him when he agreed and she snickered, shaking her head. Gods, was that woman judgmental. She hated her already. But obviously the two had a tie together. Minx just wondered what it could be so she could sever it and get the handsome man all to herself. She watched the female drag him off, probably to scold him for accepting the offer. She just rolled her eyes. She at least offered, right? She knew they would never survive out here and it would really but such a loss for such a handsome man to die because he refused her help. As they spoke to one another, Minx walked over to the only bandit that was alive. He was still choking and was near death's door. Minx grimaced at the deep purple his face was and how bloated his face had become. "Gross." Minx hissed and then stabbed her hunting knife into his head, ending his misery. She stood once more as the two walked back over to her and she wiped the blood on her leather pants. She twirled the hunting knife before she sheathed it and looked over the two. they looked as if they were royals, well at least she acted like one. The male must have been a lord or a knight of some sort. Minx didn't care. She knew Felix would make use of them.

When the male introduced them, she smirked softly. Madison and James. He seemed very handsome for a James. She snickered at the thought. When he spoke about repaying her, she just rolled her eyes and waved her hand, as if dismissing his thanks. "I thought you were cute. And you two looked like you needed the help. I was also bored. Don't worry about it." Minx shrugged her shoulders as she turned her attention to the horse that was hiding away. She blinked and slowly approached it, gently touching its neck and then it's reins. She brought the horse back over to them, a delicate gaze on her face when she looked at the horse. "And we can get some food and water for your horse. We have stables as well." Minx spoke with a sweet smile to the horse.

James had calmed himself now, but was still acutely aware of the fact that they were still being hunted. Glancing toward the dead cannibals, he decided that Darren and his men weren't the only thing they needed to worry about.

Rubbing at his throat, he listened to Minx speak. He wasn't sure what her true motives were, but she had commented about being bored and him being cute. He wondered what she meant by that.

"Still. Thank you for saving our lives." He told her in a rather sincere manner. He felt grateful, but he was still cautious when it came to accepting her invitation. On one hand, she could offer them protection from Darren. On the other, they were dangerous themselves. Though considering she spoke of horse stables, he wondered what sort of camp this was and to what clan she belonged. Most exiles traveled in pairs or in small groups - never staying in one place for long. He couldn't help but feel curious as to where they were heading.

After helping Madison back onto her horse, he decided to walk with Minx. He stayed next to the horse while the exile lead them in the right direction. As they walked up the hill and through the tall grass, James kept an eye out for his horse. This was a dangerous place for the stallion too. He was sure that the predators had already caught his scent. Or perhaps another exile had already taken him and he would never see him again. This saddened him, but at least they still had the one.

The two of them walked through the forest in quiet. It was rather peaceful - the sunlight seeped through the canopies above and caused the shadows to appear like lace on their sarcoline skin. Orange wildflowers dotted the ground around them and the birds were singing in the treetops. A bird took flight and the flapping of their wings caused James to reach for his sword - his muscles tensed as he was on high alert. When he noticed the raven fly away, he relaxed slightly. He may have spent most of his life in the palace, but the woods would always be his home.

While they walked on, trudging through mud and crisp leaves and damp grass, James couldn't help but notice the similarities between the two girls. They had the same prominent features - the same sable hair, the same dark eyes, the same high cheekbones. There were differences, but mostly in their personalities. Minx was cynical and not afraid to draw blood. Madison was naive and new to the outside world. James began to have his suspicions, though he wasn't sure if he was right. Then again, they were clearly both Marked...

It didn't take too long, possibly a few hours, to finally reach the camp. There were multiple tents set up in an open valley that was surrounding by forest. The camp was along a riverbank and a few women were washing clothes in it. Since the sun was beginning to set and people were often hungry at this hour, there were cooking pots boiling over fires being tended to. James could smell rabbit and quail and it made his stomach growl. There were a few homes that were above in the trees with a ladder leading up to them, though they seemed to belong to the people with more important roles. Then there were the stables, like Minx had said there would be. It was then that he realized where they were.

"You belong to the Thieves Guild." James said slowly, as if not wanting to believe it. He was now wondering if he had made the best decision to follow her here - to bring Madison to this camp of criminals. He wasn't sure that either of them would be welcomed there. When they first left the castle, he had no idea that they would be sleeping among the exiles.

A man approached them with a quizzical expression. Though he turned his attention to Minx and grabbed the back of her neck to bring her forehead to his. They both closed their eyes and the man whispered some sort of greeting, but it was too low for James to hear. He seemed to treat Minx rather roughly, but he already knew that she wasn't fragile.

The man and Minx spoke in hushed tones and James turned to look toward Madison who was still atop her horse. He wondered if he should tell her to run, just in case this place wasn't safe. He had heard awful rumors about these people. They would lure you in, make you trust them, then drug you and steal the clothes off your back. Still, they didn't seem to have any other options.

The male nodded toward Madison, as if reiterating his promise from earlier with that one movement.

Madison still did not trust the idea of following this Minx girl. The woman threw her off and gave her a bad aura, the same way she had always felt about her uncle Darren and looked where he had gotten them. Her father killed, Luke more than likely dead as well, and her crown and kingdom stolen from her. The princess just couldn’t shake the idea that something bad would happen to them while staying with their savior. After all they hardly knew her but they had only one other option and that was to go to an inn which would take a few more days. Which meant a few more days without water and food, not to mention the potential of possibly being attacked one more. They nearly died tonight because of the monsters out here. If going with this woman meant having some form of safety then so be it. As Minx led them to her group Madison had to keep a tight hold on her horse’s reign. She kept having flashes of visions. Not enough to force her into falling sleep like earlier, but enough that she worried for falling off her horse. It also did not help that she was incredibly tired and her mind and body were urging her to sleep but she fought those thoughts off. When they were safe she could sleep. Until then she had to stay awake. As they walked Madison focused on other things. The sky, the trees, anything really. This was the first time she was every seeing these things beyond the castle walls and she was a bit amazed. Still it pained her heart to know that it was under these circumstances. Madison did not blame her father for what he did. He felt as if it was the best way to protect her but now she was realizing what a mistake that had been. The princess was naive to this world. If it wasn’t for James there was no way she would survive. She was going to have to learn. It would be hard for her since this was very much far from the life that she was use to, but she would manage. She refused to believe that this would be her life for the rest of her days. Madison had strong hope that she would regain her kingdom back. When they finally arrived to the guild Madison looked around curiously. However the main thing that consumed her mind was the smell of food. The delicious smell filled her senses and her stomach reacted, growling softly. Her hand splashed across it as if to try and tame it. She would admit though that she was utterly starving. However food seemed to leave her mind the moment that James spoke up. The thieves guild? Her eyes darted down to the man, sudden fear filling her warm gaze. She had heard stories about them, every child in Quoar had and frankly Madison did not feel safe being here anymore. Her eyes connected with James and she wanted to tell him that they should leave but the look on his face reassured her. He would keep her safe. She knew that. Earlier was just a matter of bad luck and sleep deprivation. One of her hands dropped down and waited patiently for him to grab a hold of it before she laced their fingers together and gave it a soft squeeze. She may not trust these people but she trusted James and to her that was all that mattered.

Minx guided them back to the camp for what seemed like a few hours. Her boots crunched under the dead leaves and the twigs, mud covering her leather boots. She twirled her hunting knife between her fingers as she lifted her gaze to study the trees. She heard the birds singing and she smiled softly. She walked along the path she had memorized, stepping over a log or two as they went. She brushed her hair back from her face as she began to recognize their surroundings more and more. She began to smell the food, thankful for her heightened senses from all of the hunting and tracking she had done. She stepped through the tree line and smiled brightly as she saw the camp, her home. The Thieves Guild. James seemed to catch on as he spoke of the camp's name and her gaze turned to him from the side, a devilish smirk on her lips. "Damn, pretty boy. You're smarter than you look." Minx snickered as she sauntered into camp with a certain confidence most women her age didn't have. She called out, like a leader calling her warriors with an almost animalistic sound. a few of her men called back and people came from their tents, glad to see Minx had returned. Everyone here adored her and feared her, which was a rare combination. She was the best fighter they had, many would say she even beat Felix himself. She was a gifted warrior and her people knew it. Minx sauntered over to Felix as he came from his tent and her lips curled into a smile. Despite all that he had put her through, he was the only father she had ever known. And she loved him in her own way. Felix grabbed the back of her neck and their foreheads met. Minx panted softly as she closed her eyes, listening to his greeting. The thieves had their own language, something someone would compare to a 'savage' language. She knew it sounded rough and brutish but she loved it. She returned the greeting as they broke their embrace. She looked up at Felix and his eyes scanned the two people she had brought. Minx explained in a soft voice how she had found them and their names. She didn't notice the lustful stare Felix had on Madison and how his lips curled into a devilish grin. Minx then explained that they could be of some use to the Guild, since they were on the run from something. Felix nodded and then told her to show them to their tents since it was late. Minx nodded and pressed her forehead to his once more before approaching the pair she had rescued.

"My father agreed to let you stay here. His only request is that you contribute. Everyone has a job around here. Some are hunters, some are trackers, some are guards. It all depends on where he places you. But you will be safe here, from whoever you're running from." Minx spoke with a serious tone, which was unlike her. She knew she had to obey Felix and he wouldn't appreciate her slacking off just to flirt with a boy. She then began to lead them through the camp and she came up to a small group gathered around a fire, with some rabbit that had been roasted. Minx whistled and the whole circle turned to her. She motioned her head, signaling them to leave. They obeyed and Minx grabbed one of the stable girls, nodding toward the horse Madison was riding. She watched as James helped Madison climb down. Minx then spoke up as the stable girl approached the horse. "Treat that horse as well as you treat mine. I plan on going out tomorrow to track down the other horse." Minx commanded and the stable girl nodded before taking the reins and leading the horse off. Minx motioned for James and Madison to sit at the fire. She moved to sit on one of the logs and reached forward, snatching a leg off of the rabbit. She bit into the cooked meat and sighed happily, glad to have her hunger quenched. She looked at the two of them, chuckling softly. "Help yourselves. We don't use silverware very often here." Minx snickered, her dark gaze sparkling in the fire's light. She sighed and reached to the side of her, seeing a bottle of ale. She poured herself a cup and then poured two more. She handed one cup to Madison and another to James. She took a swig of her ale and made a satisfied moan as the harsh ale hit her throat. She did love some good ale. She bit into the leg once more.

When Minx approached them, calling the man her father, James felt startled. He had no idea that she was the daughter of their leader - or, a least, he assumed he was their leader. Though he did not appreciate the looks the man was giving Madison.

When she told them they could stay and they would have to do their parts, he nodded in response. He figured they could do as much. He could be a guard and he thought that Madison may be a good hunter with a bit of practice. She was already talented with the bow and arrow.

As they followed Minx, he practically had to drag himself forward. He couldn't help but feel a sense of foreboding as they walked deeper into the camp. He wondered if this would become their home; if they could ever trust these people and vice versa. They were all thieves and trained assassins. He knew Madison didn't fit in, that she wasn't a murderer. He hoped she never would be.

James helped Madison down from her horse and reluctantly let the stable girl take them to the stables. There went any chance of a quick escape. Though he did appreciate that Minx told the younger girl to care for their horse just as well as the others and that she would be searching for his horse the next day. Still, he couldn't describe the deep pit in his stomach as she continued to lead them further into the camp.

The sweet aroma of food filled James' nostrils as they neared the rabbit roasting above a fire. An older man in a robe was tending to the food and not making eye contact with them. Minx ripped off a leg and took a chunk of the meat. Then she was handing them both a cup of ale. It wasn't exactly palace wine, but it would do.

At first, he eyed the ale warily. He was still worried about being drugged or poisoned, but then he saw Minx take a sip of her own drink and he seemed to be reassured. Tilting his head back, he gulped the ale down within a few gulps. He then wiped at his lips with his sleeve and smiled lazily. Then the man with the robe handed him a bowl of quail soup, which he gratefully took. He tilted the bowl toward his lips and began to slurp it, which wasn't something you often saw back home in court. But he was starving and no longer cared about manners.

Glancing back toward Madison, he leaned forward to whisper in her ear. "We won't stay long. We can leave as soon as you'd like. Just say the word."

Though he was thankful for the food and ale and a place to sleep, he didn't want to out stay their welcome. They weren't exactly safe there. Then again, nowhere was really safe for them now.

He didn't say anything else and instead kept his focus on Minx. Her face was almost recognizable, as if he had met her before. He figured it was because she looked so similar to Madison. But she was entirely a mystery - except for the fact that he could tell that she was kind of sad inside. He could see it in her expressions, even though her face revealed so little.

After finishing his soup, the robed man took the bowl away. James sat without speaking and his eyes drooping. He was instantly hit with a wave of exhaustion and was struggling to keep his eyes open.

Despite the fact that they were being offered food and shelter as long as they both pitched in and helped around the camp, Madison didn’t want to stay here for long. The princess was many things but she wasn’t stupid. She didn’t belong here, and she knew that they more than likely would never be truly accepted as one of them either. She wasn’t entirely sure what she could do. Madison was not strong enough to be a guard, and she was only experienced with a bow and arrow but she did not know how to hunt. Of course she could learn but learning took time which was something they did not have. As they walked she felt her tiredness grow. She needed sleep and fast. If she fell asleep and then had another one of those visions than it would just cause more trouble for them which they clearly did not need. Climbing off her horse with the help of James, Madison looked around quietly. Was this to be their home now? As kind as it was for them to offer shelter she did not wish to live here for the rest of her life. She was a princess, with a duty to her crown and said crown was stolen. Darren was a crooked man and the longer she was away the more corrupted her kingdom would become. She had to get back and save it before it fell to unfixable ruins. The thought of food and something to drink was enough to get her mind off of her ordeal. At least for a moment. Holding the cup of ale in her small hands she debated actually drinking it. Madison had never been much of a heavy drinker but at this point she had nothing to lose really and beggars could not be choosers. Still she waited until she saw James take it drink out of his cup. If he thought it was safe enough to drink than she would trust it. Lifting it to her mouth she drunk some, her nose scrunching up slightly at the familiar burn that went down her throat. It didn’t exactly quench her thirst like water would but it helped slightly. When she was done with the cup the man in the robe handed her a bowl of soup. Typically Madison had flawless manners, being at court one needed them but out here with the thieves and the outcasts manners was one of the first things to go. Lifting the bowl she took generous chugs, her hunger slowly starting to fade away the more she ate. Wiping at her mouth with the back of her hand she listened to James’ words. Nodding her head she agreed softly. She would not ask for them to have to leave yet because they needed the shelter and food, not to mention they had to think up of a plan. Who they would need to go to in order to get the help they needed to take down her uncle. It wasn’t like they were safe here. As long as Darren was in charge of Quoar no where was exactly safe for them. It was saddening. Once she was finished with her soup the princess handed the robe man back the bowl. She lifted her hand to her mouth the conceal the yawn that broke out of her. Placing her hand on James’ shoulders she blinked her eyes groggily. “We should get some sleep.

Minx finished off her rabbit's leg before tossing the bones into a waste bucket, swallowing the rest of the savory meat. She wiped her hands on her leather pants, knowing one of the others in camp would clean her clothes the following day. Her gaze shifted to James and Madison as she took a swig of her ale. Her watched the way the two of them interacted and the way they looked at each other. She could tell something was there but that both of them were afraid. Of what, she had no clue. Maybe she was a higher rank than he was and they were afraid of judgement? Minx wasn't exactly sure but she saw their connection. She finished off her ale with a small grunt, tossing her cup to the ground. Her elbows rested on her knees as her dark gaze turned to the fire. She clenched her jaw as her eyes stared into the flames, studying the red and oranges as if it was her last time. She wished for love. She was only human after all. But, she knew the person she wanted to spend the rest of her life with had to be tough as nails. She was ignorant at times and very stubborn and one would have to have an immense amount of patience to put up with her. Minx lifted her hard gaze from the fire to the tents beyond the fire. Her tent was next to Felix's and often, she would have lovers. They were often just men or women passing through. There was one man in the camp she had been sleeping with for about a month. He was handsome enough but she knew he wasn't her soulmate or anything. Minx was never afraid to admit she had been with men before, or even women. In the Guild, it was never looked down upon. Very few were married inside the Guild. Most of the relationships in the camp were purely sexual, as they were all hardened criminals afraid of any kind of weakness. And that included love. Minx knew she wanted to fall in love one day, maybe even have a child or two. But, that all depended on her luck. Minx decided then that people make their own luck, especially women. Her hardened gaze looked over to James. She would have James, she would sink her claws into him and would fight for him. He was far too handsome for her to let him slip through her fingers. At Madison's words, Minx stood. All eyes fell to her, even the robed man. Who was named Peter. Minx and him were relatively close, he was a distant friend. Minx turned her gaze to the pair, her dark curls bouncing gently as the wind began to pick up. "I'll show you to your tents. They'll be right next to each other, don't worry." Minx said with a bitter scoff as she kicked her legs over the log, waving her goodbyes to Peter. Peter waved back and then she was off.

Minx walked down a worn out path that went through the whole camp, just from how many times people had walked in that direction. Her dark eyes seemed to glisten in the moonlight as she sauntered down the path. Her hips had a rhythm to them as she walked and she felt a sneaky smirk curl onto her lips. She looked behind her, making sure they were following her. She looked at James through her lashes and she snickered. She looked back forward, approaching their tents. One was a dark purple, and the other, a dark blue. She motioned toward them and watched them approach the tents. Inside was a bed, a few boxes to keep clothes and other trinkets in, and a lantern on the bedside table. It was the basic tent set up and each member decorated their tent to their own liking. Minx's own was a soft tan color and inside were many gold trinkets she had found on her travels. She found the material beautiful. Minx watched them with a low chuckle before speaking, "We all wake up at sunrise. But, we figure you could use the sleep so you two get to sleep in tomorrow. My father will be watching you and studying you, wanting to see which part of the camp you'd fit in well. And you are welcome to leave whenever you wish. Although, I wouldn't recommend it without getting some training to escape whoever you two are running from." Minx added the last little bit of advice with a deep sigh. She blinked and watched the two of them, her hand resting on the hilt of her sword.

When Madison announced that they should rest, James wasn't going to argue. He was tired enough to fall asleep on the log. So they all stood and followed Minx through the camp. The sky was darkening above them and stars littered the sky.

James nodded as they stood before their tents. He was glad that Madison's would be right next to his. Hopefully the tents were very thin so he could keep an ear out for any signs of struggle. He wasn't exactly sure the type of people they were dealing with just yet. They were said to be heartless, but so far, especially from Minx's kind words, they seemed to fair and honest. Part of him wondered if it was a trick.

"Thank you." James turned toward Madison and took her hand - squeezing it once before entering his own tent. It was quaint, but not too shabby. His bedroll was packed onto a bed frame with a cushion underneath in the corner, a lamp on the nightstand next to it, and a bathtub in the far corner.

Deciding that sleep could wait, James drew himself a bath. As it filled with warm water, he poured himself a glass of much cooler water. He drank it quickly - his parched throat instantly soothed.

Once the bath had filled, he stripped off his dirty clothes and set them in the corner. He then stepped into the bath and sighed in a content manner as he sank into the warmth. Steam rose from the water and his head leaned back as he relaxed - the first time he had in days.

As he washed himself, James became lost in thought. He thought about how, technically, they were exiles themselves now. He thought about how obvious it was to Minx that they were on the run and he wondered if she knew who from. He thought of how they would have to prove themselves. Would it be something barbaric? He wondered if they would have good fortune following this day or worse. They had been lucky when Minx came to their rescue and he would have to thank her properly.

It was then that in the near darkness, the shadow of a person had entered the tent. It was a woman, by the shape of them.

"Madison?" He called out, though he sounded unsure. He wasn't sure why Madison would be in his tent.

Then his expression changed as the shadow woman walked further into the tent and he realized it was Minx. He had half a mind to cover himself, but there wasn't anyway to do so. His towel and change of clothes were across the room and out of reach. He was trying to regain his breath as she neared him.

//hey dee. you can make a post for madison if you want but idk what she would do except get ready for bed. minx is going to interact with james tho so if you wanna skip then you can

Minx had gone back to her own tent once she had seen that they had gone inside. She sauntered back to her tent, her hips swinging with each movement. When she arrived, she pushed open her tent and half expected one of her lovers to be laying there, waiting for her. When no one was there, a scowl formed on her lips. She had had an exciting night and wanted an even more exciting entanglement with someone. She stripped off her dirty and tight clothes, pulling her hair out of it's braid. Her dark curls cascaded down her back and she sighed. She washed off her body, wanting to get rid of all the dirt. She bit her lip. Which lover could she go to? She was sure most of the camp was asleep by now and Minx hated going to be unsatisfied. She pursed her lips as she stood in front of her mirror, admiring her naked body. She may not act like a lady or have the best personality but she knew she was gorgeous. Her body was slim but curvy in all the right places, making most men desire her. And even some women with open minds. She smirked at the thought. She then had an idea. She knew one person who wasn't asleep yet, one man she wanted more than the others. James. She was determined for him to be hers and she would get him. She needed someone to warm her bed, even that meant stealing him from someone else. Minx didn't care enough about people to care about their opinions or their hurt feelings. She would get what she wanted, no matter who she had to go through to get it. It was how Felix raised her, to fight tooth and nail for anything and everything she had wanted. He raised a monster. And Minx was okay with that. She was good at what she did. She killed threats without blinking and she moved like a shadow, undetectable and able to get her people what they needed.

Minx smirked as she looked at her own reflection, flipping her curls over her shoulder. She would go to James' tent and he would be wrapped around her finger before long. That was one thing she prided herself on, she was a phenomenal lover. People always came back, begging for me. Minx snickered, thankful she was as flexible as she was. She moved to her chest of clothes and found exactly what she would need to seduce James. She got dressed, pulling her curls out of the outfit so they cascaded down her back. She looked in her mirror after she laced up her boots. Her dark gaze took in her outfit and her lips curled into a deep smirk. She slipped a black cloak over her outfit and pulled the hood up, shadowing her face. She felt the smirk stay plastered on her lips and she walked out of her tent. It was easily the middle of the night now as the stars glittered brightly with the moonlight. Minx sauntered through the camp, moving like a feline. She came up to James' tent and pulled back the opening and then closed it behind her. She walked out of the shadows as he spoke Madison's name. Her lips curled into a snarl. She would refused to be compared to her. Minx removed the hood from her face to show her face. Her beauty glowed in the lantern's light and she smiled softly at James, a lustful hunger in her eyes. Her lips parted as she saw him in the bath and her lips curled into a smirk. "I've been thinking... about how you could thank me." Minx purred, her gaze never leaving his. She moved to remove her cloak, letting it fall at her feet. Her chest rose and fell quickly as she looked at him through her lashes, almost seeming to have the power to seduce a man with a mere look. She slowly approached him, her dark curls cascading down her back. She sat on the edge of the bath tub, a playful smirk on her lips. Her finger dipped into the warm water and she softly splashed James with a snicker. "You're one of the most beautiful men I've ever seen. And I want you." Minx looked at him through her lashes, almost breathy with her words. She smiled deviously as she moved closer to him, her eyes filled with hunger.

James paled as he noticed Minx's outfit beneath her cloak. When she pulled her hood back and eyed him with lust, he flinched. He refused to fall under her spell. He knew that if he did, he would do something foolish.

So instead he closed his eyes so not to look at her. He heard her draw near and speak of how he could thank her. His breathing grew rapid and his heart beat faster until finally he felt her splash him. His eyes opened again and he saw her sitting on the edge of his tub with a devilish grin.

He had to admit, she was very pretty. Any man would be an idiot not to be attracted to her. Still, he couldn't stop thinking about how Madison was in the tent right next to his - most likely fast asleep and unaware of what was going on. What was happening in this tent right now was unspeakable and he wasn't sure if he could bring himself to inform Madison the next morning.

Minx called him beautiful, told him that she wanted him. She then moved closer, and closer, until their noses were touching. He could feel her warm breath mingling with his. Suddenly he had fallen into a trance and he wasn't sure how to break it. Their lips brushed against each other and suddenly the hunger in his eyes matched hers. He was then very aware of how clear the water in the tub was.

Pulling back, almost in a cringing manner, he told her, "Sorry. I'm sorry."

Shaking his head, he decided that the quicker they left, the better. He couldn't sleep with an exile, a trained murderer, and the daughter of the leader of the Thieves Guild. Especially not when he was in love with Madison. He had almost kissed her and it made him realize just how much he wanted to be with her. It would almost feel like a betrayal to act on his own selfish desires.

"I can't." He said in a low voice - averting his gaze while he awaited her wrath. He knew that she would most likely take this as an insult.

"You are beautiful and believe me, I want to, but..." He trailed off before finally meeting her gaze again. He was trying his best not to let his gaze wander toward her assets.

    "I'm not ready."

Not only was he in love with Madison, but it had been over two years since he had slept with a woman. He was insecure about his abilities considering Willa had long since left his bed empty and cold. He often wondered why he wasted his time that way. He didn't need friends, he didn't need love. His duties were all he was worried about. But now his duties were mostly gone, besides protecting Madison. Most of the people he knew, had grown up with, had been slaughtered by the apathetic new king. Darren seemed to have little concern for human life. The thought made him flinch again and the mood seemed to dissipate.

Minx moved closer to James, their soft breaths filling the still air. She leaned into him, their noses brushing against one another. She smiled softly, feeling victorious as he seemed to give in to her spell. Their lips brushed against one another, almost in a teasing way. And she closed her eyes, leaning in to fully kiss him. She imagined what a good lover he would make and if she would be his first. Or perhaps he was a player and she was his tenth, or even twentieth. Minx smirked at the thought. She could see James secretly being a player. He was handsome enough for it. When James pulled back so quickly, Minx frowned deeply. She leaned back, still sitting on the edge of the bathtub. He apologized quickly while shaking his head and she felt her lip curl in a snarl. Was he rejecting her? She had never been rejected before. She did not like this feeling. When he said he couldn't, scoffed and stood. She looked down at him with a quirked brow as he was quick to say she was beautiful. She grumbled under her breath. She knew she was. She wasn't sure how to act or react right now. She had never been rejected and this was all so foreign to her. Like her first time sleeping with a woman. Minx frowned deeply as James admitted he wanted to. She rolled her eyes and cross her arms over her chest. And then he said he wasn't ready. And Minx truly did begin to wonder if she would have been his first time. She dropped her arms down to her sides and she narrowed her eyes. She knew most people held a high standard for their first time but Minx liked to think she would be a very good option for someone to lose their virginity to. Minx sighed deeply and moved back toward him, dropping down to her knees and sitting beside the tub. Her eyes searched his and she tried to understand why he would reject her. And then it hit her.

Madison. A scowl formed on her lips and her dark eyes lit with fire. "Would that be because it would be your first time or because you're in love with Madison? A girl you could never have." Minx spoke, a bitter tone in her voice. She ran a hand through her curls with a soft scoff, shaking her head. "I see the way you look at her. And I can tell that she is above your station. So it's possible that you love her, and have never told her because you can't and it would ruin your friendship, am I right?" Minx spoke as her dark gaze met his. When he confirmed her thoughts, she nodded. She shook her head, thinking Madison was being naive is she chose someone else over James. Not only was he gorgeous, but he was a good guy. And those were rare in a world like this. Minx met his gaze as her dark curls framed her face. The resemblance to Madison was clear in this moment and her skin seemed to glow in the dim light. She reached forward and gently caressed James' cheekbone. "Look, I'm not looking for you to marry me or anything like that. I'm not stupid. I don't want any strings attached. I just want you. All of you, your body especially." Minx looked at James through her lashes as she purred, her gaze darkening as she purred.

When Minx grew angry, James had expected her to be cruel. He thought to himself that she must not have been used to rejection. James had to admit that he was not used to having to reject others' offers, or accept them either. Still, he couldn't have prepared himself for what Minx had said next.

He understood why she thought it would have been his first time as he often tensed up around women, as well as from the way he spoke. But then she spoke of his love for Madison. This did not surprise him as he figured his devotion would be obvious. Though the way she spoke her name, like it burned her tongue, bitter with jealousy, that was what surprised him.

Despite her jealousy, her accusations were spot on. She was correct that he didn't want to ruin their friendship, and that she was above his station. But it was much more than that. She would never understand. Unless he told her of the gift that they shared. Though he didn't trust her enough just yet to tell her something like this.

"My duty is to keep Madison alive." He said slowly, as if trying not to give too much away. "But yes, we are close and I do care for her. So there is more to it."

Minx seemed to understand, though that didn't mean she liked it. She knelt down beside his tub and looked up at him through thick lashes. He almost fell into the trance once more as she purred, but shook his head instead. He was a resilient man and did not count seduction as one of his major weaknesses. But when she told him how badly she wanted him, how she wanted nothing in return, just his body... He felt compelled to kiss her. He wanted to take her up on the offer, but the guilt continued to nag at him. He wouldn't be able to forgive himself if he did this.

"I thank you for keeping us alive." James said carefully with a warning note in his voice. "But there must be some other way to show my gratitude."

His frustration was growing as she didn't take no for an answer. She must not have been used to such a prospect.

But he was not here to sleep around and drink and live as one of them. He had a job to do. He needed to keep the heir to the throne alive. If there was any hope of saving their kingdom and returning home, then he would need to keep her safe. Which meant staying vigilant and not being distracted. And if he failed, well, he didn't want to think about that.

As he sat in the tub, in the now lukewarm water, a frown began to form on his lips. He was interested, but he wouldn't be able to act on it until he knew that there was a plan on taking back the throne for Madison. Until then, he would stay restless and not swayed by anything or anyone - not even Minx.

"Now if you'll excuse me. I am finished with my bath and have some sleep to catch up on." His eyes rested on her lips for a moment before his expression grew stoic once more.

Minx narrowed her eyes when he had said his duty was to keep Madison alive. She guessed he must have been a knight of some kind and she was possibly a noblewoman? Or maybe even royalty. She didn't care either way. Everyone was treated the same here, no matter what their rank had been before. Minx looked at James with a soft hunger, feeling as if she finally wouldn't be alone if she had James at her side. She had only ever been a sexual object to men so that was the only way she was able to get close to someone she wanted to care about. She wanted James. And she had lied. She wanted more than just his body. She wanted his mind, his soul, his love. She felt as if he was the type of man who make her a better person. And Minx just wanted to be a better person, not to fall into a pattern of her father. She wanted to care. She had been trained not to. She wanted to love. She had been trained not to. She wanted to break that cycle. She wanted to love someone and for them to love her. Maybe then she wouldn't feel so lonely. She wanted James to make her not feel alone anymore. Not only to warm her bed but to warm her heart. She smiled softly at the thought. When James broke the silence with a warning tone in his voice, her gaze met his. She narrowed her eyes at his words and she felt an anger boiling inside of her. But also this strong feeling of needing to cry. Her heart sank to her feet at this rejection. Was she not good enough for him? Would she always be cursed with never being enough? There would always be another woman who was better than her, no matter what. She sat back on her heels as he spoke of finding some other way of thanking her. She frowned deeply, a lump forming in her throat. She felt the loneliness sinking into her once more, like a sickness. She winced at the thought. She had thought James was different. She was apparently wrong. He would chose someone else over her, just like everyone else. She stood at his dismissal words. Tears welled in her eyes but she quickly blinked them away. She scoffed and shook her head, the pain clear in her dark gaze. She turned quickly and grabbed her cloak and wrapped it back over her body and pulled up the hood. She looked back at James with tears in her eyes. "I'm sorry for bothering you, Sir." Minx said bitterly in a broken voice. A cry escaped her lips before she rushed out of the tent.

She cried as she made her way back to her tent, just wanting to feel numb again. She wanted to feel nothing, to harden her heart once more. She entered her tent and ripped off her cloak. She sobbed and anger filled her dark gaze. She ripped off her clothes, throwing them to the ground. She fell to her knees and held herself as she doubled over. Her forehead pressed to the bottom of her tent as she let out silently sobs that racked through her whole body. She felt so much immense pain. She wanted it all to go away. She grunted as she pushed herself off of the ground. She grabbed her cloak once more, putting it over her naked body. She pulled the hood back up and she grabbed a bottle of rum from under her bed. She made sure her body was covered by the cloak before she made her way back out of the tent. She headed across camp, to a tent owned by a man named Ilya. She pushed open his tent and he woke with a start, panting softly. He was shirtless and sweat softly beaded his hairy chest. She looked at him, pain clear in her eyes as tears streamed down her cheeks. He sat up and approached her, a worried look in his eyes. He was one of the few lovers who genuinely cared for Minx and she cared for him. She shook her head when he began to ask what was wrong. She popped open the bottle of rum and chugged about half of it as she sat on the edge of his bed. She panted softly and handed the bottle to Ilya. He took a few drinks before approaching her once more, his worried eyes on her. He asked once more what was wrong and she stood, removing her cloak to reveal her naked body. His eyes widened and she climbed on top of him, gently caressing his cheeks. "Just make me forget, Ilya." Minx whispered and he slowly nodded before the lovers kissed. They spent hours entangled in each other's bodies and soon after, Ilya was asleep with her in his arms. Minx stared at the wall and she cried herself to sleep silently.
